Al McGuire. McGuire declined an NCAA bid in 1970 in a dispute over Marquette's placement in a distant regional site. He took his team to the NIT and won it.
1985. The tournament has since added a play-in game to bring the total to 65.
James Naismith. Naismith coached Kansas in the early 20th century, but did not believe the game was to be coached, but only to be played. He was highly unsuccessful, but was succeeded by the more involved Allen.

Wayman Tisdale. Tisdale was a first-team All-American in 1983, 84, and 85. Freshmen were ineligible prior to 1973, except for certain wartime exceptions.
Dick McGuire. McGuire began the 1944 season for eventual NIT champ St. John's, but was drafted into the armed forces and stationed at Dartmouth in mid-season. He finished the season on the Dartmouth squad that lost to Utah in the NCAA final.

Houston. UCLA and Houston were 1-2 in 1968, but played only in the regular season and national semi-finals. The Bruins beat UNC in 1968, UK in 1975, and Purdue in 1969.
Oregon Ducks, 1939. The Ducks won the first NCAA tournament championship by defeating Ohio State, 46-33. Other participants included Villanova, Oklahoma, Utah State, Texas, Wake Forest, and Brown.
Dan Dickau . He led the Zags to a 29-3 regular-season record his senior year. He was drafted late in the first round and then traded to the Atlanta Hawks.
Gonzaga Bulldogs . The Bulldogs fisrt appearance in the NCAA tourney was an 87-63 defeat by Maryland in the 1995 NCAA's. A three-year tourney drought was ended in style by the Zags, who advanced all the way to the Elite 8 as a 10th seed, before falling to Connecticut. A Sweet 16 run was ended by Michigan State in 2001. A selection commitee travesty gave the Zags a sixth seed in 2002 and a first round date with a dangerous Wyoming squad, which they lost 73-66. Most recently, they were involved in the most memorable game of the 2003 tourney, losing to Arizona, 96-95 in 2 overtimes. They are a member of the West Coast Conference.
