    Rules of Baseball

What are the only two defensive positions allowed to (but not required) use a 'mitt'?Baseball Rules

Catcher and First Base. Remember, there is a difference between a glove and a mitt.

Is a tipped ball directly into the catcher's mitt live or dead?Baseball Rules

Live. There is a difference between a tipped ball and a foul ball. On a tipped ball, runners may advance at their own risk.

While delivering to the plate with a runner on first, the pitcher throws a wild pitch that becomes lodged in the backstop. How many bases are awarded to the runner?Baseball Rules

One. One base is awarded on an overthrow from the mound.

With a runner on second, the batter lifts a fly ball to the left fielder. The runner tags legally and attempts to reach third. The left fielder's throw enters a dead ball area. How many bases is the runner awarded?Baseball Rules

Two. Starting with the last base legally reached, runners are awarded two more bases. In this case, the runner would be awarded home, thus scoring a run.

With nobody on, the batter lines a ball into the left-center gap. While rounding first, the first baseman steps in the batter-runner's way causing the runner to retreat back to first. In the umpires judgement the runner would have made second and awards the runner that base. What baseball term(obstruction or interference) describes this situation?Baseball Rules

      Obstruction.

With a runner on first, the batter grounds a ball to the second baseman. While fielding the ball, the runner attempting to advance to second makes contact with the second baseman. The umpire declares the runner out and the play dead. What term(obstruction or interference) describes this situation?Baseball Rules

Interference. Interference is called on the offensive player, obstruction is called on a defensive player.

With one out and a runner on second, the runner attempts to steal third. The pitcher hits the batter with the ball and a dead ball is declared. The batter is awarded first. What is done with the runner on second?Baseball Rules

Sent back to second. In this situation, the runner will stay at the last base legally occupied.

The batter lines a ball back up the middle that bounces off the pitcher's rubber and rolls foul in front of third base without touching a defensive player. Is this ruled a foul ball or fair ball?Baseball Rules

Foul. General playing rules for baseball.

With men on 1st and 3rd, a batter hits a ball that hits an umpire that is standing behind the pitcher, but in front of the fielder. What is the ruling?Rules of the Game

It is a live ball as the umpire is a part of the field. If the ball hits an umpire who is standing in front of a fielder, it is still live. The umpire is part of the field.

An infield fly can be called if there are men on 1st and 2nd and one out and the infielder catches a pop up standing on the outfield grass?Rules of the Game

true. Depending on how far out into the outfield the fielder goes (this is strictly an umpire's judgment) an umpire may still call infield fly if the fielder is standing on the outfield grass.

The first base umpire incorrectly calls a runner out at first base. A different umpire sees the incorrect call and automatically overrules the first base umpire. Is this allowed? Rules of the Game

No. The only time an umpire can overrule another is, if the umpire who originally made the call asks for help, or the home plate umpire interprets the rule differently.

A batter bunts the ball fair, then when he drops the bat to start running, it rolls forward and touches the ball on the ground. What is the call?Rules of the Game

it is a live ball and the play continues. Since the batter did not throw the bat at the ball on purpose, the play is live. If he threw the bat at the ball intentionally then the batter shall be called out.

With one out and a runner on third base, the batter hits a fly ball to right center field. The ball goes off the centerfielder's glove back into the air and the right fielder makes the catch. After the ball went off the centerfielder's glove, the runner from third took off for home, before the right fielder made the catch. The team in the field appeals the runner at third saying he left before the ball was caught. Is the runner out?Rules of the Game

no. As soon as the ball is touched, the runner is allowed to tag up. It does no matter when the ball is actually caught; all the fielder has to do is touch it.

With two strikes, the pitcher throws an inside pitch that hits the batter. In his attempt to get out of the way he swings the bat. What is the ruling?Rules of the Game

it becomes dead and he gets first base. When the ball hit the batter, it became a dead ball. No runners advance and the batter is awarded first base.

The first baseman bobbles a ground ball hit to him. When he finally gets the ball, he has to dive to the bag to beat the runner. With the ball in his glove the first baseman tags the bag with his bare hand before the runner reaches first. Is the runner out?Rules of the Game

yes. Even though the ball is in his glove touching the bag with his bare hand, is just like touching the bag with his foot. This only works with tagging the base if you tried to tag a runner with your bare hand the runner would still be safe.

After a meeting on the mound all the players go back to their positions. With the pitcher on the dirt part of the mound (not on the rubber) the runner from first takes a lead. The first baseman has the ball in his glove and tags the runner. Is this allowed?Rules of the Game

Yes. The pitcher can be on the dirt portion of the mound, but not the rubber without the ball.

With one strike on the batter, the defense realizes that the incorrect batter is up and brings it to the attention of the umpire. Which should the umpire rule?Rules of the Game

there is no penalty, the correct batter has to get up with one strike on him. Providing the illegal batter did not get a base, score a run, or advance a base runner.

If the manager comes out and talks to the catcher then the catcher goes right out to talk to the pitcher the team is charged with a trip to the mound. Is the team still charged with a trip to the mound if the pitcher throws a pitch in between the manager talking to the catcher and the catcher coming going out to the mound? Rules of the Game

no. As long as the pitcher throws one pitch in between the manager talking to the catcher and the catcher going out to the mound then the team is not charged with a trip to the mound.

What happens when the ball is foul tipped into the catcher's glove and he hangs on to it?Baseball Basic Rules

The batter is out if there are two strikes. When the batter foul tips the ball into the catcher's mitt, he is out if there are two strikes.

If a fielder catches a fly ball in foul territory, can a runner on base tag up?Baseball Basic Rules

Yes. This is true, though it happens very rarely.

What happens when the ball hits the outfield grass and bounces over the wall in fair territory without a fielder touching it?Baseball Basic Rules

It is a double. When the ball does this, it is called a ground-rule double.

How many umpires are there on the field in a World Series game?Baseball Basic Rules

      6. During a World Series game, there are home plate, 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, left field, and right field umpires.

When a player is at bat and the pitcher delivers a ball that only hits his uniform and not his body, is he still awarded first base?Baseball Basic Rules

What is it called when a pitcher steps toward home plate, then moves his foot to try to pick-off the man at first base?Baseball Basic Rules

Balk. When a pitcher does anything like this, all the players on base get to move up a base.

A runner is standing on second base when a batted ball hits him. The second baseman is behind the base to field the ball. The runner on second should be called out?FED High School Baseball Rules

      t. The base is only a refuge on an infield fly. At other times the runner must give the fielder a chance to field a ball.

Runner on first. The pitcher from the set position and in contact with the rubber, turns his shoulders toward first but does not throw. This is a balk?FED High School Baseball Rules

yes. In the Major League Baseball (OBR) this is not a balk, but in high school rules, it is. Runner gets second base.

The runner rounds second and stops. As he returns to the bag, the shortstop fakes a tag. What is the infraction and award?FED High School Baseball Rules

Obstruction--runner gets third base. Fake tags are considered obstructions. The award is a minimum of one base from the last base attained. Since the runner had already attained second, he gets third. A fake tag also comes with a team warning, and the next person who fakes a tag is automatically ejected.

Runners on first. The left-handed pitcher in the stretch, and without moving his feet throws to first. This is legal?FED High School Baseball Rules

No. The pitcher must step toward the base.
