Dirty Sexy Money
Nick George is a successful lawyer with a wife and daughter. He is content with his life until a major event takes place. What event disrupts Nick's well-ordered life and kicks off the show? | "Dirty Sexy Money" - "The Pilot"
|
His father is killed in a plane crash. The first scene of this episode shows Nick looking out over the water as the wreckage of his father’s plane is pulled out. We soon learn that Nick had a troubled relationship with his father Dutch, who was the Darling family lawyer. Dutch spent most of his time attending to the Darlings, neglecting his wife and son. Nick's mother leaves eventually, abandoning Nick to Dutch's care. Nick starts his own life, but never loses his distaste for the world of the Darlings and his father's preoccupation with it. Then Dutch's plane crashes.
Soon we are introduced to the entire Darling clan, which consists of seven members (not counting spouses and fiancés). Who is the last Darling whose name we learn? | "Dirty Sexy Money" - "The Pilot"
|
Brian Darling. The Darling family pulls up to the funeral in style and is met by a swarm of press. The first person we meet is the family patriarch, Tripp Darling, played by the indomitable Donald Sutherland, and his wife, Letitia Darling. Karen steps out, with a companion, and the press begins a barrage of questions. Patrick Darling appears next, and we learn that he is a politician who is probably going to run for a seat in the U.S. Senate. Juliet Darling arrives, and the questions she is asked makes it clear that she is an actress and very likely a bad one. Finally, Jeremy saunters in looking like the consummate playboy. Just when it seems like introductions are over, Nick enters the church, and we learn that the priest is the seventh member of the Darling family - Brian Darling.
$10 million annually to give to charities. Nick has no desire to work for the Darling family (or at least that's what he claims). He agrees to meet with Tripp in order to set up a charity in his father's name. Once at the meeting, Tripp offers him the job. As an incentive, Tripp offers a $2.5 million salary with an additional $5 million per year to donate to the charity of his choice. Nick is surprised, and considers accepting. However, he stipulates that he must have a regular work week in order to make sure he has time to spend with his family. Also, he asks for $10 million for charitable purposes. Tripp readily agrees to all Nick's conditions, and Nick takes the job in spite of his better judgment.
Hiring musicians for Darling parties. Karen and her fiancé Freddy await Nick in his office when he arrives at work. Apologizing for being late, he begins to show them the pre-nuptial agreements. However, Karen awkwardly mentions that Nick was her first lover and proceeds to reminisce in a way that makes both Freddy and Nick very uncomfortable. Next, Nick travels to Maple Grove Academy where Brian is attempting to bribe the headmaster into allowing his illegitimate son into the academy. Brian stalks off – to perform a baptism, no less – when Nick arrives, leaving him to deal with the mess. Finally, Jeremy is arrested when illegal immigrants are discovered on board the yacht he won from Ethan Hawke. When you add in dealing with Juliet's talent problems and forgetting to pick up his daughter from school, Nick had a pretty full day. (There were musicians at the Darling's anniversary party but Nick was never shown hiring them.)
A horse. Jeremy announces that he and the absent Juliet were in charge of picking out a gift this year, and presents a race horse named "Irish Ice" - complete with jockey - to his parents. Letitia seems overjoyed with the present, while Tripp seems more concerned with getting the house out of their house before it makes a mess.
She overdosed on medication. Juliet is infuriated when she finds out that Tripp had bribed the director of her play into giving her the lead role. She claims she wants to prove she can make it on her own. Letitia is sympathetic, but assures her that Tripp is only interfering out of love. She then requests that Juliet not make a scene at their party in the evening – a request Juliet ignores by rummaging through a medicine cabinet until she finds a bottle of prescription medication and downs it. Several hours later, Karen comes across her and screams for help.
Brian and Nick have a confrontation outside the party. Brian wants to know how the school enrollment went, and Nick informs him, quite emphatically, that he must acknowledge his son. In response, Brian begins to insult Nick's father, provoking Nick into physically attacking Brian. How does Brian react to this assault? | "Dirty Sexy Money" - "The Pilot"
|
He turns around and runs away. In one of the more hilarious scenes of this episode, Nick and Brian are in the middle of snarling at each other. Tensions are high, and Nick steps forward. Brian suddenly and unexpectedly tries to flee into the house, only to be tackled in the foyer. Tripp walks in to see the two wrestling on the floor, but the tableau is interrupted when Karen frantically calls for a doctor.
To break up with his lover. After the anniversary party, Nick tells Tripp that he quits. Nevertheless, as Nick is leaving the party, Patrick asks Nick to get into his car because there is a "matter of life and death." Nick reluctantly agrees, but is angered to discover that Patrick merely needs to end things with his transvestite lover Carmelita and doesn't have the courage to do it. Nick lectures Patrick about responsibility, at which point Patrick agrees to break it off with Carmelita personally. A later scene shows that Patrick changed his mind about the break-up.
"Girls Just Want to Have Fun" - Juliet. Nick asks his assistant Daisy to program the Darlings' phone numbers into his phone, and she creates a ring tone for each Darling that suits their personalities. Jeremy's crazy exploits definitely match "Born to Be Wild," while Brian's "Hallelujah" matches his religious persona (and is nicely ironic, as Nick would never rejoice that Brian is calling). Finally, Karen's "Pretty Woman" gets Nick into some hot water with his wife, who is concerned about his relationship with Karen after walking in on them in a semi-compromising situation.
Dutch may have been murdered. Karen asks Nick to meet up with her, where she reveals that Brian has paid $10,000 (and promised $90,000 more) to the mechanic who worked on Dutch's plane. Brian has always been a vocal opponent of Dutch's 'insinuation' within the Darling family, so Nick's suspicions are aroused. Karen does not mention loving Nick or an affair with Dutch in this conversation, and she is most likely unaware of Brian's son’s existence (although Nick has known since his earlier meeting with Brian). Additionally, Karen drops the bombshell that Dutch and Letitia had been having an affair for over forty years. This is even more alarming, because it would give Tripp a very good reason to want Dutch out of the picture. Nick quickly reverses his earlier decision to quit, in the hope that he will learn more about his father's death. He ends the episode with a vow of revenge on his father's killer.
Nick's and Tripp's. This episode opens with a montage of Nick and Tripp getting ready to go to work in the morning. Tripp wakes up alone and has servants shave, dress and cook for him. Then he has the time to write in his journal. Nick, on the other hand, wakes up with his wife beside him, but then navigates the morning unskillfully. He cuts himself shaving, burns himself eating breakfast, cannot find the suit he wants to wear, and is pressed for time. The point of this comparison is to highlight the difference between the lives of ordinary people and the filthy rich, although Nick's $2.5 million salary will alter his 'ordinary' status quickly enough.
His parents were killed in a train accident. Brian does not want to confess his affair to his wife, and plans to take the child back to his mother the next day. Therefore, he tells his wife that Brian Jr. is a Swedish orphan whose parents died in a bullet train disaster. Upon discovering that the child's mother has fled the country, Brian reluctantly brings his son back home with him. He knows that he will have to tell his wife the truth eventually, but asks Brian Jr. to maintain the charade for a little while longer, temporarily renaming him "Gustave."
Blackmailing Brian about his illegitimate son. Nick finally hears back from Norman Exley, whom Brian had covertly paid $100,000 for unknown reasons. Fearing that Exley, who worked on Dutch's plane, might have been responsible for the crash, Nick is surprised when Exley readily admits that he knew about Brian's “secret love baby” and extorted money from him. Exley probably knew nothing of Patrick's affair (or Patrick would be paying blackmail too), and Kenneth, Tripp's brother, was assassinated. Exley leaves Nick with one last comment: that Letitia and Dutch often flew off together, and Tripp had to have been unhappy about it.
Juliet’s archenemy. Juliet is living at the Argyle Hotel to assert her independence from the Darling family. When Jeremy comes to visit her, we see that she is in a plush hotel suite, but she complains that the penthouse is occupied. Juliet begs Jeremy to find out who the occupant is. Jeremy bribes his away upstairs using his supposed partnership with Justin Timberlake, and finds out that the room is occupied by Natalie Kimpton and her mother. All signs point to Natalie being a former lover of Jeremy's ("Remember St. Barts?"), but she is definitely an enemy of Juliet's (some sort of signature perfume/bangs debacle). Their animosity makes Jeremy hesitant to get involved with Natalie, but he changes his mind quickly. However, to cover his tracks, Jeremy tells Juliet that the penthouse is occupied by a Belgian chef.
Freddy’s. Karen is upset that Letitia will not allow her fiancé to be in the picture. Letitia believes that Karen's multiple marriages are an embarrassment to the family, and refuses to allow Freddy's presence. Brian Jr. is present at the photo shoot as an observer, and only because Nick brought him. Juliet, as a member of the family, is welcome to be in the shot, and Nick never asks to be included. He does not consider himself a member of the Darling family, even though his father did. Nor do the Darlings seem to believe he would be a fitting addition to the photograph. However, Nick does get to perform the thrilling task of informing Freddy that he cannot be in it. Freddy jumps to the conclusion that Nick is the one barring him from the picture, and believes Nick is still in love with Karen.
Yes. After discovering the affair and beginning to suspect that someone has murdered his father, Nick tries to dig up more information. He realizes that he needs to know whether Tripp knows about the affair, because revenge on Dutch would be a powerful motive for murder. After discussing his options with Lisa, she advises him to go the source for straight answers (advice rarely followed in television). However, in this instance, Nick does seek out Letitia, and she does not deny her involvement with Dutch. She also does not know if Tripp is aware of it, but suggests that Tripp's journal would be the best place to find that information.
Inked-out writing and a picture of a plane crashing. Nick notes that Tripp writes in great detail in his journal, and the majority of his topics are quite ordinary. However, Nick comes across a page that contains a sketch of a plane nose-diving into the water and some words that have been scratched out. Nick doesn't say much about his conclusions, but I would venture to guess that he is frustrated that the journal has neither cleared Tripp entirely nor unequivocally indicted him. Therefore, Nick is in the same position in which he started: He still suspects Tripp, but has no real evidence that Tripp wanted Dutch dead.
She is portrayed by a body double. Juliet flatly refuses to come to the family photo shoot (even though she temporarily wavers when she discovers there will be lions present), claiming she is now 'independent' from the family. Apparently, in Juliet's world renting a room in a ritzy hotel on her father's credit card is not dependency, but being present at a family portrait is. In any event, Nick's assistant Daisy hires a stand-in for Juliet. Tripp is not thrilled about this deception, but the family's picture is taken with the fake Juliet anyway.
No. Nick admits during the photo shoot that he took Tripp's journal because he was looking for information about his father's death. When Tripp asks him what possible motive he would have for killing Dutch, Letitia runs out of the room and Nick is hesitant to mention the affair, on the chance that Tripp does not know about it. Tripp follows Letitia, and Letitia seems to expect Tripp to mention her affair. However, Tripp merely says how hurt he is by Nick's accusation, and reassures Letitia by telling her that they will sort their way through this mess together. Letitia, out of relief and love, kisses Tripp soundly, and we are left wondering whether he knows about the affair or not.
Simon Elder. Nick struggles to open the briefcase that was recovered from his father's plane crash throughout the episode. In this final scene, Tripp suggests that Nick try 712, Letitia's birthday. As the briefcase clicks open, both men wince at the proof that Dutch and Letitia were involved, and it is clear that Tripp is in agony. Nick removes a dossier on one Simon Elder, whom we’ve not met. Tripp suggests Nick look more closely at Elder if he wants to find out who killed his father. The episode ends as Nick riffles through the briefcase, seeking answers about his father, and Tripp experiences his private pain over Letitia and Dutch’s affair.
Nick continues to search for answers about his father's death, but when he goes to the police, he talks to a different detective than he did at the helicopter wreckage. What happened to the cop (Angelina Adams) who was initially investigating Dutch's murder, according to the detective to whom Nick talked? | "Dirty Sexy Money" - "The Italian Banker"
|
She transferred to follow her actor boyfriend. Nick decides to go to the police with the suspicious dossier on Simon Elder, despite his wife's reluctance to accuse "the richest man in the world" and Tripp's belief that Elder is untouchable. Nick is surprised to learn Detective Adams has been transferred, but talks to a different detective who promises to look into things. However, less than twenty-four hours later, the detective says there's nothing incriminating in the folder. Nick is immediately suspicious that Adams was transferred because she was actually willing to investigate matters. The detective dismisses this notion by telling Nick that Adams moved to Los Angeles with her boyfriend, an aspiring actor. Whether this is true or not has yet to be determined.
The main plot of this episode involved a blackmail demand over a lewd tape produced by one of the Darlings. Nick asked all of the Darling children whether the tape might be theirs. Which was NOT a way one of the Darlings denied making the tape? | "Dirty Sexy Money" - "The Italian Banker"
|
I wouldn't jeopardize my political career. Patrick denies ever making a tape because he does not think they're romantic. A better reason might have involved not jeopardizing his career, but this is not the response Patrick gives. However, Patrick's extramarital affair could provide just as much fodder for the media, so Patrick already has a few secrets he'd prefer to keep buried. Jeremy claims to have had a collection of celebrity videos – including one of Buddy Ebsen – but not a personal tape. Perhaps most startling is Juliet's declaration that she’s never 'fooled around' with anyone, despite her less-than-pure reputation.
Soon after Nick questions the Darling family, a copy of the tape is sent to the family publicist and Nick discovers who the culprit is. Which Darling made the tape? | "Dirty Sexy Money" - "The Italian Banker"
|
Karen. Initially, both Nick and the family publicist believe that Patrick is involved. The blackmailers release the audio portion of the tape with the demand for a million dollars as proof that the tape exists. Apparently, a mannish voice says "Paddy" at some point on the tape. However, Nick interviews the family and no one admits anything. The publicist is not as easily convinced, succinctly saying "Darlings lie." When the blackmailers provide a copy of the tape, we learn that the mannish voice is actually Karen's, and that she says 'caddy' (not 'Paddy'). Her companion on the tape is her golf-pro fiancé Freddy's caddy.
They received a better offer for it. Karen gives Nick instructions to a bank vault the Darlings have, and tells him to withdraw the million dollars to pay the blackmail. When Nick arrives, he is staggered by the amount of money – both in cash and gold bars. The banker reveals the Darlings have many such vaults around the city. Nick is rather uncertain of his ground, so he asks the banker if he needs to give an explanation for withdrawing the banker. The banker hastily replies that he wants no explanations; Dutch used to withdraw money at times and now Nick will. Nick seems floored by the entire transaction. However, when Nick shows up at the blackmail location, the blackmailer’s girlfriend fearfully informs Nick that someone else made a much larger offer and so the tape has already been sold to an anonymous buyer.
Clark. Patrick breaks up with Carmelita in accordance with his father’s wishes. However, Patrick is extremely upset and goes to a bar with his faithful chauffeur Clark. Clark tries to get Patrick to leave (because Patrick is about to give an important campaign speech), but Patrick takes shot after shot. Clark finally pries him away from the bar, but Patrick insists on driving and promptly runs the car into a fire hydrant. By the time Nick arrives on the scene to convince a belligerent Patrick to get ready for his campaign speech, the policeman say that there are too many gawkers for no one to get arrested. Clark promptly offers his wrists to the cop, telling Nick that it's 'standard procedure.'
Meanwhile, Brian is trying hard to maintain the charade that Brian Jr. is a Swedish orphan. When does Brian’s wife realize (not merely become suspicious) that 'Gustave' speaks English? | "Dirty Sexy Money" - "The Italian Banker"
|
When he inquires about "SpongeBob SquarePants" on TV. Brian’s wife becomes suspicious when Brian Jr. pipes up with "Amen" in response to Brian saying grace before dinner. Brian, clearly flustered, tells her that "Amen" is the same in Swedish as it is in English. She doesn't quite buy it, but she doesn't say anything more about it. However, later, Brian Jr. is watching TV with his half-siblings and wonders "How come the sponge eats burgers underwater and the buns don't get soggy?" in reference to the cartoon "SpongeBob SquarePants." Brian can no longer deny that the boy speaks English, so he stages an elaborate 'talk' with Brian Jr. (in front of his wife) about the child's 'dishonesty.' Brian Jr. is extremely confused by the conflicting signals his father is sending, but does not reveal his secret.
Twin-tuition. Juliet refers to her "twin-tuition" several times throughout this episode. She believes that she and Jeremy have a special connection that allows her to know when he's hurt or in trouble (she cites a time where Jeremy fell down Elton John's well as an example of this). Additionally, she believes that this intuition allows her to read Jeremy's thoughts and feelings better. Throughout this episode, her "twin-tuition" tells her that Jeremy likes Natalie (her sworn enemy, as evidenced by the well-documented red carpet catfight the two have). Jeremy's sticking up for his sister against Natalie convinces Juliet that her instincts about the couple were wrong. However, later events reveal that – in this case – her "twin-tuition" was dead on.
Yes. Patrick does break it off with Carmelita after being pressured by his father, but is miserably unhappy. His drinking binge and car collision are proof of his dejection (and irresponsibility). However, Nick manages to perk Patrick up with some inspirational words, motivating Patrick to give a wonderful campaign speech and get his life back in order again. One of the final scenes of the episode shows Patrick pulling up beside Nick and thanking him for the great advice. He then announced that he and Carmelita are back together (in fact, Carmelita's in the car too). Nick is not thrilled, seeing as their relationship endangers Patrick's political aspirations, but is happy that Patrick is making his own decisions.
Jeremy. Patrick's campaign speech is held at Bulgari, which is one of the reasons Natalie insisted on going. She wanted to get some of the promotional items Bulgari would have. Natalie shows up against Jeremy's wishes, and gets embroiled in a messy argument with Juliet (again, about bangs and perfumes and such). Jeremy ends up supporting Juliet in the fight, prompting Natalie to flounce off in anger. As an apology, Jeremy visits Natalie later and presents her with a handbag and an expensive-looking necklace. It appears that the bag and the necklace are just the promotional 'swag' Natalie was hoping to get, but Letitia receives a call from Bulgari verifying the delivery of some very expensive jewelry purchase. Letitia believes that the "J. Darling" who signed for the purchase is Juliet. Juliet goes along with this assumption, but angrily realizes that Jeremy bought the jewelry for a secret girlfriend.
Yes. Nick assumes that whoever purchased Karen's tape is going to release it to the general public, and begins preparing Tripp for the coming scandal. However, later, as Nick is walking up to his home, a man approaches him with a manila envelope containing all copies of the tape. Nick is confused, but accepts the tape eagerly. The man explains that his boss, Simon Elder, bought the tape for three million dollars, and cautions Nick that neither Elder nor Tripp are "the men [he] thinks they are." The man then turns away, leaving behind a pensive Nick.
Nick continues to search for answers about his father's murder. Tripp gives him the name of a private investigator that Dutch often employed. What is the name of the investigator? | "Dirty Sexy Money" - "The Chiavennasca"
|
Harold Templeton. Nick went to the police with his suspicions about Simon Elder, and was blown off. Therefore, in this episode, Nick takes Tripp up on his offer to help investigate Dutch’s murder. Tripp supplies Nick with Harold Templeton’s name, and informs Nick that Templeton is a retired spy who served England, France, and China at various points in his career. Tripp claims ignorance about where Templeton is located, but instructs Nick to go to a vineyard in Italy, as Dutch used to do when he required Templeton's services.
