Atari Games Mixture Trivia Questions

1. A is for "Adventure". Which castle-- along with the Golden and White Castles-- is part of the two harder levels of the game?

From Quiz
Atari Games A-Z

Answer: Black Castle

Inside the Black Castle is a maze through which the player travels to find the Golden Chalice (the treasure being sought). The player enters the Black Castle via a corresponding key of the same color. The player finds this key in the maze of the White Castle. Rhindle (the red dragon) and Grundle (the green dragon) attempt to stop the player from succeeding along with Yorgle (the yellow dragon). In addition to the White Castle's maze, there are also mazes to get to the White Castle, to get to the Black Castle, and in the Black Castle. "Adventure" was released in 1980 and was inspired by "Colossal Cave Adventure", a 1977 text-based game.

2. In this game a guy with a propeller pack and some dynamite goes looking for some stranded miners. What's the game?

From Quiz Atari 2600 Games

Answer: H.E.R.O.

This game was created by Activision. If you scored a million points, you could take a Polaroid of you T.V. and send in for a H.E.R.O. patch.

3. Which game requires you to catch bombs dropped by a "Mad Bomber" before they hit the ground and explode?

From Quiz Atari 2600 Games

Answer: Kaboom!

"Kaboom!" was created by the company Activision in 1981. "Kaboom! is considered to be one of Activision's signature games, and sticks to the basic principle of being simple, addictive, and fun."

4. One of the all-time great Atari games first appeared in 1979 and was named for the goal of blasting what types of celestial body?

From Quiz Blast-Off!

Answer: Asteroids

"Asteroids" was designed by Lyle Rains and Ed Logg for Atari Inc. It was first released as an upright arcade game before being adapted for the smaller Atari game consoles. The concept was addictively simple. The player controls a triangular ship that shoots at large asteroids. These large asteroids break up into smaller asteroids and are harder to hit. The player can go up, down, right, and left and must destroy all the asteroids before completing a level. For those interested in going for a world record, you must be prepared for over 40 million points and at least 60 hours of continuous gameplay. Some people really have too much time on their hands.

5. In this game, you are an interplanetary botanist that loves Reese's Pieces. Your goal is to find, and assemble, the three parts of your telephone so that you can phone home. What game is this?

From Quiz How Well Do You Know Your Atari 2600 Games?

Answer: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

For some reason, this game has been cited as being the worst video game in Atari 2600 history. Once you and E.T. find the three pieces and assemble the phone, you will go to the designated area and wait for the spaceship to pick him up. Once he have been picked up, the game resets but the three telephone pieces are in a different location.

6. This game had Harry running and swinging through the jungle looking for gold bars and diamond rings. Which game was it?

From Quiz Atari 2600 Games

Answer: Pitfall!

This was one of the few Atari games that had its own commercial. It was so successful Activision created a sequel.

7. Which Atari 2600 game do you have to shoot space creatures before they reach the ground and succeed at their invasion of earth?

From Quiz Atari 2600 Games

Answer: Space Invaders

"Space Invaders" was created by the Atari company in 1978. "There are 112 game variations. These variations include moving shields, zig-zagging bombs, invisible invaders, and several two-player simultaneous options. Tip: Enable the secret "double-shot" mode by holding down the reset button when you turn the game on."

8. Steve Wozniak was also a part of Atari legend in helping develop the prototype for which game that required players to blast through eight rows of colorful bricks using a movable paddle and a single ball?

From Quiz Blast-Off!

Answer: Breakout

One of the great legacies of Atari lies in the simple one word names for many of their coolest games. "Breakout" was developed by Steve Wozniak, Steve Bristow and Nolan Bushnell and released in 1976. Although originally created as an arcade game, "Breakout" was adapted for the Atari 2600 and 5200 game consoles and spawned two exceptionally fun additional games in "Super Breakout" and "Breakout 2000." The original game was not that difficult to beat with a score of 896 enough to earn the champion moniker.

9. "She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain When She Comes. She'll be..." In which of the below games would you have heard tunes of many popular songs from the likes of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite"?

From Quiz Atari ST - Gaming Heaven or Hell?

Answer: Lemmings

I love the tunes on "Lemmings". The concept was so original at the time that it will undoubtedly always remain a classic. The Atari has to make its mark though. On Taxing Level 3, you are really pushed for time. When you have 100 lemmings on the screen, your bridge builder starts to slow down. Great news though. This can be solved by you hovering over a part of the screen that doesn't have the 100 lemmings it in. This gives you an extra 10 seconds or so! In "A Rock Star Ate My Hamster", you could choose characters like Crispy Rind (Chrissie Hynde) to be in your band. Your aim was to get to the top of the charts, which almost never happened, as your rock star would invariably be killed in some freak accident. "Kid Gloves" is a basic platformer that you have a tendency to run out of keys on. You could go to a shop to purchase extra keys. However, when I did this, they took the money and ran. As if it wasn't challenging enough! "Volfied" is one of those games where you have to draw a line from the edge of the screen, until you clear a certain percentage of the area. The difference this time is that there is a massive creature in the middle that follows you around, as well a plethora of power-ups available.

10. In 2008, the Guinness Book of World Records listed which popular two-dimensional fixed shooter game as the top-rated arcade game in technical, creative, and cultural impact?

From Quiz Blast-Off!

Answer: Space Invaders

"Space Invaders" was one of my all-time favorite games and many a 10-pence piece was lost in the bowels of the arcade game version. The game was developed by Taito, designed by Tomohiro Nishikado and released to the market in 1978. The game brought over $500 million in profits to the Taito Corporation, which amazingly outdid the gross ticket sales for the Star Wars movie. When the game was released on the Atari 2600 and Atari 5200 consoles it quadrupled sales figures for the Atari company. "Space Invaders" was such a phenomenon that it inspired a medical condition in America diagnosed as "Space Invaders Elbow." It also inspired a 1981 political bill in England called the "Control of Space Invaders Bill," that was an attempt to ban the game on account of its addictive property and potential for promoting deviancy. Ah, that explains why I turned out the way I did!

11. When I played "Video Pinball", I would do my best to hit the Atari logo. If this were accomplished four times, what would be the result?

From Quiz "Atari Anthology" Spell-It-Out

Answer: Extra ball

"Video Pinball" was originally released in 1978, and then for the Atari 2600 in 1980. The Atari 2600 version actually had flippers, bumpers, spinners, and a ball shooter like a real pinball machine (the original 1978 version was a bit different). One of the features of this game was a roll-over bonus. On one side of the screen, there was an Atari logo. If this logo was hit four times, an extra ball was earned.

12. E is for "Eggomania". What does the player use to catch eggs in "Eggomania"?

From Quiz Atari Games A-Z

Answer: Hat

The hat is larger in the easier version of the game and smaller in the more difficult version. The eggs are being thrown at you by a chicken. At the end of each round, you can throw any caught eggs at the chicken for bonus points. Henry Hill and Wes Trager designed the game. "Eggomania" was designed by U.S. Games and released for use on Atari devices in 1983.

13. Another all-time favorite arcade blasting game appeared in the 1982 movie "WarGames" and was adapted for the Atari 7800 game console in 1987. Which space-age insect blasting game continues to be popular in some arcades?

From Quiz Blast-Off!

Answer: Galaga

Galaga was published and developed by the Namco Corporation with Nobuyuki Ohnogi the lead programmer. The game was released as an arcade machine in 1981 and was a sequel to the 1979 game "Galaxian." To start the game a player is in charge of a spaceship at the bottom of the screen that has to blast lines of alien insects that appear at the top. Over the course of the game those insects swarm lower and shoot at the player controlled ship. Once a player destroys all enemy insects the game moves to another level. "Galaga" was released for the Atari 7800 game console in 1987. The game is so popular that it even gets a call out in the 2012 "Avengers" movie.

14. In this game, you are Luke Skywalker and you must pilot your snowspeeder in a battle versus the AT-ATs. You may be able to use The Force, smart-bombs, or you could just blast them a lot. What game is this?

From Quiz How Well Do You Know Your Atari 2600 Games?

Answer: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

The premise of this game is that you are on the ice planet of Hoth and must defend Echo Base from the advancing AT-ATs (All-Terrain Armor Transports). The only objective of the game is to destroy the never-ending supply of enemy walkers before they reach your base. The game is over when five of your snowspeeders are destroyed or when one of the Imperial AT-ATs reach Echo Base.

15. "Centipede" was created by two programmers. One was veteran Ed Logg, who had also created "Asteroids". What was (relatively) unique about Logg's collaborator on the game?

From Quiz Atari Coin-Op: The Greatest Hits

Answer: She was a woman

Dona Bailey co-designed this iconic video game, which ended up, by coincidence or design, to be one of the most popular arcade games among young ladies. It was also one of the first games of the era to use Artificial Intelligence code. For more information, see http://www.answers.com/topic/dona-bailey

16. In what part of the screen did your ship start from during the game, "Asteroids"?

From Quiz "Atari" Potpourri

Answer: The center

You had a little ship that began in the center of the screen. It could spin and move very quickly but usually took it two or three shots to destroy an asteroid. Most of the time it would break the asteroid into smaller pieces.

17. F is for "Fishing Derby". In "Fishing Derby", how many pounds of fish does a player need to catch win?

From Quiz Atari Games A-Z

Answer: 99 pounds

99 pounds of fish will win the game for a player (there is both a one-player mode and a two-player mode). Depending on how deep the fish sat in the lake, they each weighted two pounds, four pounds, or six pounds. A shark also roams the lake to attempt to eat a fish that has been hooked (but not reeled in yet) by a player. The fire button allows a player to reel in the line more quickly. The joystick allows the player to move the line up, down, right, or left. "Fishing Derby" was created by Activision and released for use with Atari consoles in in 1980.

18. Which game played you a lovely, politically incorrect song containing the lyrics, "War! Never been so much fun?"

From Quiz Atari ST - Gaming Heaven or Hell?

Answer: Cannon Fodder

"Cannon Fodder" involved you taking your little men around, trying to kill other little people, whilst not getting them shot. The Amiga version had a neat little hill where all your dead people were buried once they had died. This was conspicuously missing from the Atari version. I'm sure "Dragon's Breath" is a deep game once you understand what is going on. You can hatch dragon's eggs, buy ingredients to mix up powerful potions to improve their attributes, and send them to breathe fire on poor civilians. "Harlequin" was an interesting little platformer where you, strangely enough, play a harlequin. You can even turn into a fish. I like it for the music, which I found quite hypnotic. "The Chaos Engine" involved you playing a guy like a thug or a brigand, and shooting lots of ugly creatures. It was by the Bitmap Brothers, who were responsible for classics like "Xenon 2", "Gods" and "Magic Pockets".

19. Climb on in, but be sure to use those eyes in the back of your head as your tiny ship shoots and dodges space projectiles coming at you from all angles! Which game does this sound like?

From Quiz Atari 2600 Games

Answer: Asteroids

This is another game that began as a coin-op arcade game. When you hit the bigger asteroids, your life got much more difficult as they split into smaller ones!

20. What Atari 2600 game fits this description? The object is to avoid bad guys while collecting phone parts hidden in pits.

From Quiz Atari 2600 Games

Answer: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

Atari created this game in 1982. This game is thought to be the cause of the video Game Crash of 1983."Atari buried 5 million unsold copies of "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" in the New Mexico desert."

21. G is for "Golf". In the 1980 Atari game "Golf", for how many holes does a round of golf last?

From Quiz Atari Games A-Z

Answer: Nine Holes

"Golf" is playable in one-player mode or two-player mode. The round of golf lasts for nine holes. Each hole is played in two parts. After the player gets the ball to the green, the on-screen view zooms into the green and the player then attempts to get the ball into the hole. Various obstacles appear in the game such as trees, sandtraps, and water surrounding the course. The player holds the red button down for a longer time to hit the ball with increased force.

22. Beat the clock as you steer your plane through the pylon course...watch out for those trees while you are at it! Which game is this?

From Quiz Atari 2600 Games

Answer: Sky Jinks

As you became a better pilot you could play courses where you had to navigate up to 100 pylons. Of course, you had increasingly less time to pull off the feat.

23. H is for "H.E.R.O." From what dilemma is the player rescuing characters in "H.E.R.O."?

From Quiz Atari Games A-Z

Answer: Being caught in a mine

The player tries to save characters who are caught at the bottom of q mine. The mine is laid out to resemble a maze. The player wears a backpack with a helicopter attachment that allows the player to move up, down, right, and left in the mine. To make things a bit more difficult, the helicopter backpack has limited power which means the player must complete the mission in a limited amount of time. To make things a bit easier, the player only has to reach the trapped character not return with the character to the surface. "H.E.R.O." was designed by Activision and released for Atari systems in 1984.

24. Possibly the most famous and popular game of all time; stuff your face and take your vitamins as you play keep away from four pesky ghosts. Which game is this?

From Quiz Atari 2600 Games

Answer: Pac-Man

"Pac-Man" was such a hit Atari eventually decided to include it with the Atari 2600 game system. "Pac-Man" spawned sequels for Atari, and continued his quest onto the many video game systems that have been created since Atari. "Pac-Man" was so popular he even went to Hollywood where he starred in a Saturday morning cartoon!

25. Which Atari 2600 game fits this description? You are in charge of shooting down incoming missiles before they destroy the city below.

From Quiz Atari 2600 Games

Answer: Missile Command

"Missile Command" was created by the Atari company in 1981. "Missile Command for the 2600 is a respectable, scaled-down version of the arcade game, but a few basic elements were compromised to squeeze it onto the system. There's only one missile base instead of three. A more serious constraint is how you can only shoot three of your own missiles at a time. When you attempt to shoot a fourth missile, the game will make an annoying "squeak" sound."

26. Which "Atari 2600" game has the same name as a Tom Hanks movie?

From Quiz "Atari" Potpourri

Answer: Bachelor Party

The game had nothing to do with the movie except that they shared a name. In fact, "Bachelor Party" was nothing more than a sophisticated version of "Breakout". Instead of a vertical screen, you had a horizontal one.

27. This unique gaming experience was all about climbing towers. Your aim was to avoid all the obstacles, master all the tricks and do this within a challenging time limit. You even got to catch some fish! What is the game?

From Quiz Atari ST - Gaming Heaven or Hell?

Answer: Nebulus

"Nebulus" is a genius concept. Hard, but maybe I'm just clumsy. You played a green frog like creature, and used to get knocked off the tower by a pink spinning thing. "Beyond the Ice Palace" only has three levels. Easy, you'd think? Not a chance! When you hear that you're given nine lives to take on this challenge, it will give you some idea of how often you die. At one point, if you lose one life, you're pretty certain to lose a few more in a flawed bottleneck. In "Black Lamp", you play a jester that has to go around collecting different coloured lamps to place in a cabinet. All this whilst getting permanently shot at! It was a maze and I just kept getting lost. "Impossible Mission 2" is one of my favourite games of all time. You go up and down an elevator in eight different towers. In each tower there are a series of rooms in which you need to search all of the objects in order to find numbers and equipment. I could never get the hang of jumping on the springs!

28. What complex, geometric Atari game asked its players to use their Blaster and SuperZapper to obliterate aliens pouring into the universe through cosmic tubes?

From Quiz Atari Coin-Op: The Greatest Hits

Answer: Tempest

Created in 1981, "Tempest", like "Centipede", was originally conceived as a version of the venerable "Space Invaders". Once designer Dave Theurer got going on it, the game took a different shape, and it remains one of the most unique creations of its time. For more information, see http://markn.users.netlink.co.uk/Arcade/tempest.html

29. This game was created by "Activision" for the "Atari 2600". Up to four players could play at one time. Which one was it?

From Quiz "Atari" Potpourri

Answer: Decathlon

This game consisted of 10 different athletic events and its graphics were good, especially for the "Atari". It kept score for up to four people in events such as diving, the shot put, the long jump, and the 100-meter dash.

30. J is for "Jungle Hunt". What is the name of the character controlled by the player in "Jungle Hunt"?

From Quiz Atari Games A-Z

Answer: Sir Dudley Dashly

Sir Dudley Dashly is mentioned by name in the story that is provided in the game's playing manual. He is attempting to rescue his wife, Lady Penelope, from a group of cannibals who kidnapped her (a plot point that might not be included in a video game created now). In various screens of the game, Dudley swings on vines, leaps over obstacles he encounters on the ground, and swims through the water. "Jungle Hunt" was originally called "Jungle King" and designed by Taito for arcades in 1982. The home version of the game was released by Atari in 1983.
