Latin Language Trivia Questions

1. The Mass opens with "in nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti." What are our opening words?

From Quiz
Church Latin

Answer: In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit

It is customary to cross yourself as you say these words. Using the open right hand, start at your forehead (in the name of the Father), down to the base of your sternum (and of the Son), then from your left shoulder to your right (and of the Holy Spirit). This is in the Latin Rite. The Eastern Rite churches do it a little bit differently.

2. What's the comparative form of the Latin adjective "altus" (high)?

From Quiz Latin Adjectives: Find the Comparative

Answer: altior

"Altus" gave the English word "altitude". This word exists in French too with broadly the same meaning.

3. What's the genitive of the Latin word "rex" (king)?

From Quiz Latin 3rd Declension - Find the Genitive

Answer: regis

Think of the English adjective "regal" and the French one "regalien".

4. Which famous Latin song, frequently sung in academic contexts, urges us to enjoy ourselves while we are young?

From Quiz What's Left of Your Latin?

Answer: Gaudeamus Igitur

"Gaudeamus" is from the 18th century, but based on a manuscript from the 13th. It is also known as "De Brevitate Vitae" (On the Shortness of Life). Its standing in academic circles likely stems from the verse with the words "Vivat academia". "Antea" is a Latin version of Lennon and McCartney's "Yesterday", written by Tuomo Pekkanen, a Finnish professor of Latin. The "Benedicat" title is my own, and is supposed to mean something like "May God bless the fatherland". The last one is usually associated with the Roman senator Cato the Elder (234-149 BCE), who was said to end every speech in the Senate with an exhortation to destroy Carthage. In fact, he was not the only one to talk like that, just the best known. The full phrase (in this variety) is "Praeterea censeo, Carthaginem esse delendam".

5. The meaning of this Latin phrase is "From the Depths". Oscar Wilde wrote a letter with the same name while in prison. What's the phrase?

From Quiz Pick up your ears ! Romans are speaking!

Answer: De Profundis

The phrase "De Profundis" was first recorded in a Latin translation of Psalm 130. "De Jure" means "By law". "De Facto" means "By deed". "De Mortuis" is part of the phrase "De mortuis aut bene aut nihil", which means "Speak well of the dead, or don't speak at all".

6. A -- Please indicate which phrase you would use to describe "Friend of the Court".

From Quiz Latin Legal Phrases from A to V

Answer: Amicus Curiae

The correct answer is Amicus Curiae. The phrase refers to a person or group receives permission to participate in the case by submitting a brief supporting a side in which they have an interest. This procedure is often used in a high profile case. The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) will often submit an Amicus brief on behalf of a defendant in a case involving First Amendment freedoms. For example, the ACLU recently filed a brief on behalf of the Westboro Baptist Church, which gained notoriety for picketing outside of veterans' funerals. Actus Reus refers to the offense or "bad act" of which the defendant is accused. For example, in order to be convicted of murder, a defendant must be shown to have caused the unlawful killing of a human being. The actus reus of murder consists of the act of killing. Ad Hoc (literally, "to this") means formed for a particular purpose. An example would be a temporary committee formed to investigate the need for a particular piece of legislation. Anno Domini means year of Our Lord, abbreviated A.D., and is part of the designation of a date. It is used to refer to the present era, and signifies the number of years after the birth of Christ.

7. The first step in pretending to know Latin is to identify Latin terms used in everyday life. One of the bits of Latin most commonly used in English is the abbreviation "e.g." (exempli gratia). What does it mean?

From Quiz Pretend to have an expensive education with Latin!

Answer: For the sake of example

Not, as someone recently tried to convince me, a simple contraction of the English word 'example'. Where's the g in example? I asked. Duh! Right there...hey, wait...

8. What word in the Latin language actually means "language"?

From Quiz Latin Lingua 1

Answer: lingua

"Lingua" means language in Latin and is derived from the Greek language. Easy, right?

9. If I told you "subveni", of which Beatles' song might this be a translation?

From Quiz Beatles' Latin Song Titles

Answer: Help

This John Lennon song was written in 1965 for the album of the same name. It reached number one in both the UK and US charts.

10. Lawyers frequently use Latin expressions. Is it to show off? No: some terms are more concise and/or precise in Latin. For example, where could you most likely find a "res nullius"?

From Quiz Common Latin Words and Phrases

Answer: In the forest

A res nullius is an object that doesn't belong to anyone. Typical examples are wild animals or wild mushrooms. So, if you find edible mushrooms in a forest, you're free to pick - unless specific rules would apply. In a public library one could perhaps stumble over an umbrella left by another visitor. However, this umbrella is not a res nullius: it clearly belongs to some one, but the finder doesn't know the owner. Speaking in a strict legal way, you own your pet and its food bowl, as well as the contents. However, don't ever disturb your pet when it is feeding. Your neighbour's car is clearly not yours, and your neighbour owns not only the car but also the contents of its boot.

11. Minimus Mouse, are you ready to take on this mission to help young children to learn Latin through a Minimus Club? Choose the best reply.

From Quiz Minimus - Mouse on a Mission

Answer: paratus sum

Minimus would reply with "I am ready". He is a mouse so he is not "magnus" which means big, as in the word "magnify". He may be "sordidus" which means dirty but that is not likely to get him the job. He is definitely not a horse, "equus" as in "equestrian". Many people have been prepared to take on the role of setting up and running Minimus Clubs, ranging from people who have been teachers, to people like myself with a 40 year old "O-Level Certificate" in Latin. The clubs have been supported by a range of printed and on-line resources and some financial help. The course is also used in a formal lesson setting in some schools and forms part of the primary curriculum.

12. As I settled back in my taxi, the cabbie turned around and said, "Satisne caloris tibi est?" What question was just posed?

From Quiz Lingua Latina Occasionibus Omnibus

Answer: Hot enough for you?

As a true hater of warm weather, I would be downgrading my planned tip after this unfeeling remark. It is ALWAYS hot enough for me. But I might first respond, "Illud iterum dicere potes!" (You can say that again!)

13. Who hasn't served on a committee at one time or another? What is the Latin term for a committee charged with dealing with one specific task?

From Quiz Latin Lives!

Answer: Ad hoc

Ad hoc means literally 'to do this thing', and it is used today in reference to something that is improvised and done on the spot, or, in the case of committees, charged with carrying out a specific task. Ad hominem (literal meaning: 'relating to a specific person') describes an argument based on emotion rather than reason, attacking the person who put forward the argument rather than the argument itself. Ad lib ('do as you please') means to speak off the cuff, and ad infinitum is 'going on forever'. Come to think of it, some of the committees I've served on seem to fall under the ad infinitum description.

14. What declension is "via, viae"?

From Quiz What Declension and Gender Are These?

Answer: 1st declension, feminine

The Via Appia was the "queen of the roman roads", extending from Rome to Brundisium (Italian : Brindisi), a port city on the east coast of Italy.

15. Who am I singing to if I sing to "puella mea"?

From Quiz Latin Song Names

Answer: My Girl

This classic, written by Smokey Robinson, was first performed by the Temptations in 1964.

16. This verb is in the first person, present tense, plural, active voice. The infinitive form of the verb is "portare".

From Quiz Incredible Latin Quiz

Answer: Portamus

The answer is "portamus" because "-mus" is the first person plural ending and there are no tense signs. "Porto" is first person, present, singular, active. "Portavimus" is first person, present perfect, plural, active. "Portabit" is third person, future tense, singular, active. The four parts of this verb are "porto, portare, portavi, portatus". "Portamus" means "we carry", and the verb is of the first conjugation.

17. What is the English equivalent of Spanish "azul" and Latin "caeruleus"?

From Quiz Latin & Spanish

Answer: blue

"Azul" and "caeruleus" both mean blue.

18. What do the Latin first names of Hagrid and Dumbledore - Albus and Rubeus - refer to?

From Quiz Learning Latin Through "Harry Potter" Names

Answer: Colours

"Albus" means "white" - a reference to Dumbledore's spiritual, ascetic nature. On the other hand, "rubeus" (a synonym of "ruber") means "red" or "reddish" - a reference to Hagrid's fiery, emotional nature, and maybe also his penchant for strong drink (which would turn his nose red). English words such as "albino" and "ruby" are related to these Latin words. J.K. Rowling meant for these two characters to represent the red (base metal) and white (gold) in alchemy. Another character with a colour-related given name is Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour, whose name means "red-haired": in fact, he is described as having a lion-like "mane of tawny hair".

19. How would 'quis portat aquam' be translated into English?

From Quiz Latin for You, Latin for Me

Answer: Who is carrying the water?

'Quis' means who, 'portat' means carrying, and 'aquam' is water.

20. What state's motto is "Nil sine numine" ("Nothing without divine will")?

From Quiz Latin Mottos, Quotes and Abbreviations

Answer: Colorado

Although it sounds biblical, it is drawn from line 777/778 of Vergil's Aeneid, book II, "non haec sine numine devum Eveniunt" -- These things do not happen without the divine will of the gods.

21. What is the dative singular of 'homo'?

From Quiz So You Think You Know Latin...?

Answer: homini

'Homo' is third declension. Take the genitive singular, 'hominis', drop the 'is' in order the obtain the stem, 'homin', and add an 'i' to get the dative singular.

22. What does ambulo, ambulare (1) mean?

From Quiz Latin Vocabulary 1

Answer: to walk
