Norse Myth Trivia Questions

1. Who was the chief god who is often called 'The Wanderer'?

From Quiz
Wotan and the Other Norse Gods

Answer: Wotan

Wotan is the chief god. He rules from Valhalla and is also called Odin and Woden.

2. Gandalf was a member of what race in Norse mythology?

From Quiz Norse Mythology

Answer: Dwarves

Norns were a group of three individuals that determined man's fate; whether they would be rich or poor, wise or stupid, happy or sad and each persons life span. Some of the Norns were said to have descended from the dwarves. The Jarnvidger were female trolls living in Ironwood. The dwarves have usually been identified with the forging of metals. They have also been credited with the creation of Thor's hammer, Mjollnir.

3. Who was the author of "The Prose Edda", written around 1220 CE, a well known source of Norse mythology? He was a native of Iceland.

From Quiz Norse Mythology

Answer: Snorri Sturluson

Snorri Sturluson was born in Iceland in 1179, the Son of a local chieftain. He became quite wealthy and politically influential in Iceland during his lifetime. His work has become a standard reference source for Norse mythology.

4. The gods knew well in advance that something was not right and that Balder, the god loved by all, was in danger. How did the gods know this?

From Quiz Norse Myth: The Death of Balder

Answer: Balder had a series of terrible dreams

Balder is perhaps the god with most positive associations in Norse mythology, being linked with love, beauty and truth. Balder himself possessed these positive traits and so was the most loved of all the gods. Even the giants, elves and dwarves loved him, as did his parents, Odin and Frigg. Frigg, like all the gods, was terrified at the thought of losing Balder, and so, after hearing of her son's bad dreams, decided to take an oath from everything in the nine worlds that they would not harm Balder.

5. Once more, the three gods, Odin, Honir and Loki, set out to explore Midgard. Passing by a waterfall, the gods saw an otter, which Loki killed with a rock. Aside from his being generally malicious, why did Loki kill the otter?

From Quiz Norse Myth: Otter's Ransom

Answer: To get the salmon it had caught

The three gods who had set out to explore Midgard in the story of Idun's apples had once again journeyed out of Asgard to satisfy their curiosity. Loki had killed the otter so as to get the salmon for a meal that night, as the day was coming to an end. As he boasted about his terrific shot, he realised that they had "two for the price of one", with the otter and the salmon.

6. Brothers Agnar and Geirrod were princes. What was the name of their father?

From Quiz Norse Myth: The Betrayed Brother

Answer: King Hraudung

King Hraudung was King of the Goths, and his sons were aged 10 and 8. Agnar was the eldest and Geirrod the youngest. After rowing out to sea with the intention of catching some fish, the two princes were caught in a storm and their boat eventually came to rest on the coast of a small island.

7. Which world is Mimir's Well closest to?

From Quiz Sorcha's Norse Mythology Stumper

Answer: Jötunheim

The story of "Mimir's Well" states that Odin raveled through Midgard, the World of Men, and made his way to Jötunheim, the Realm of the Giants. This was near Mimir's Well, which was a source of wisdom.

8. As Thor prepared to leave Asgard, what reason did he give for his journey to Utgard?

From Quiz Norse Myth: Thor, You're Not So Tough

Answer: That he wanted to kill giants

With his new hammer, Mjolnir, Thor intended to flex his muscles and kill some giants. As he prepared to leave Asgard, Thor told the other gods that "however few they [the giants] are, they are too many." Loki told Thor that he would need sharp wits if visiting Utgard, and so offered to accompany him. Thor knew that Loki was evil and malicious, but recognized that he would be a good companion.

9. Like many tales in Norse mythology, this begins with Loki and his malicious actions. For the sake of a joke, the trickster snuck into the room of the goddess Sif, and cut off all her precious hair. Which powerful god was the husband of Sif?

From Quiz Norse Myth: The Gifts to the Gods

Answer: Thor

With Thor, Sif gave birth to Thrud, goddess of storm and clouds and one of the Valkyries. Before her marriage to Thor, Sif was said to be wed to the Giant Orvandil, with whom she mothered a son named Ull, god of winter.

10. Despite all of Loki's wrong-doings, one being stood by him the whole way - his wife. What was the name of Loki's loving wife?

From Quiz Norse Myth: The Children of Loki

Answer: Sigyn

Sigyn, like many other Norse goddesses, is not very well known. Her greatest association is being the wife of Loki. Freya is the only goddess who features prominently in the tales of Norse myth. It is thought, since it is claimed in some texts that Norse goddesses are as important as the gods, that the tales which have been lost through time are largely those involving the goddesses. Whilst other gods grew to hate Loki and eventually banished him and bound him to a rock, it was Sigyn who stood by him.

11. Idun, who came to dwell in Asgard, was not a god herself, but was instead the daughter of a being called Ivaldi. What type of creature was Ivaldi?

From Quiz Norse Myth: The Apples Of Idun

Answer: A dwarf

Ivaldi was a dwarf and so dwelt in Nidavellir. He, like his sons, was a great craftsman and was said to turn to stone if he was exposed to sunlight. Idun was unlike her father or her brothers both in terms of appearance and personality. She was fair to look upon and was kind to others. The sons of Ivaldi were held by some as the finest craftsmen in the nine worlds and they feature prominently in the story of the six gifts to the gods (which I will cover later).

12. The Mead of Poetry is said to have been formed from the blood of Kvasir, the wisest of all the gods. How did Kvasir come to be?

From Quiz Norse Myth: The Mead of Poetry

Answer: He was formed from the spit of the gods

Kvasir was a direct outcome of the war between the Aesir and the Vanir - the two races of warring gods. To learn more about this conflict, please play my quiz, "Norse Myth: Warring Gods". The gods all spat into a jar and Kvasir was formed from their spittle. He was said to be the wisest of them all and he answered questions wherever he went.

13. Since their births, the two sets of gods - the Aesir and the Vanir - each fought to be more powerful than the other. Whilst the Aesir are referred to as Warrior gods, how are the Vanir known?

From Quiz Norse Myth: Warring Gods

Answer: Fertility gods

The Aesir, who were led by Odin, were mainly concerned with the activities of men. The Vanir, however, had stronger associations with nature and fertility. Whilst the Aesir lived in Asgard, the home of the Vanir was called Vanaheim. Both were located on the top of three levels believed to exist in Norse mythology.

14. It is said that the creation came when the cold from the north met the fire from the south. What was the rather tongue-twisting name for the previously empty land between these two areas?

From Quiz Norse Myth: The Root of All Beings

Answer: Gunningagap

The intense flames from Muspell in the south were such that no one could bear the heat, apart from those born into them. Likewise, the frost in the northern realm of Niflheim was too cold to support life. As the two extremes met, they produced perfect conditions for life. The heat from the south melted the ice from the north and the water that dripped formed Ymir, an evil frost giant.

15. As night approaches and the sky is green and grey, Freya leaves what location and heads towards the Bifrost?

From Quiz The Necklace of the Brisings

Answer: slept with four dwarves

According, however, to earlier skaldic verse, Loki undertook to steal the necklace on his own connivance, and was prevented from doing so by far-seeing Heimdall. It is not clear what was so eminently desirable about the Brisingamen; either its special power was to make others covet it, or perhaps it magically enhanced the beauty of its wearer. (Indeed, this latter possibility is supported, albeit indirectly, when one considers that with the Brisingamen around his burly neck Thor was once able to pass himself off, not merely as a woman, but as the beauteous Freyja. Of course, he wore a veil...)
