In 1891, James Naismith invented basketball as a way to keep young men at the School for Christian Workers (YMCA) occupied. Women's indoor basketball followed, but within a few years dribbling ceased to exist in the women's game. The game moved outdoors onto grass, the court was divided into three zones, and the baskets were replaced by rings with a net. By the time the first set of codified rules were published in 1900, the game had become "netball". The rules were standardised internationally in 1960.
