Fun Trivia: T : Taglines - Tough

Special Sub-Topic: 1995 Taglines III

'Terror goes into overtime.'

Sudden Death. Jean-Claude Van Damme saves us from some terrorists in this hockey-stadium-set action flick.

'Where happily ever after is just a dream.'
The City of Lost Children. This French film is about a scientist who kidnaps children and steals their dreams, in the hope that it will slow his aging process. It was co-written and co-directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who also brought us 'Delicatessen' and 'Amelie'.

'In 2033, justice rides a tank and wears lip gloss.'
Tank Girl. Lori Petty has the title role, and was an apparent precursor to Gwen Stefani in this movie. Ice-T and Naomi Watts also have prominent roles in this futuristic vision of earth.

'They can die quickly. They can die slowly. But they must die!'
Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead. This film was a pleasant surprise when I caught it on TV. Andy Garcia plays the lead, romancing Gabrielle Anwar and defending Fairuza Balk's prostitute. He and some other guys get roped into doing a job for a mob guy and when they mess it up they face certain death. Christopher Walken's performance as the wheelchair-bound mob boss to whom Garcia reports is notable.

'A story about love at second sight.'
While You Were Sleeping. Sandra Bullock's successful follow-up to 'Speed' placed her squarely as a romantic comedy leading lady. She plays a ticket collector who fantasizes about one man (Peter Gallagher) only to fall in love with his brother (Bill Pullman) while the first man is in a coma.

'Some lives cross, others collide.'
The Crossing Guard. Jack Nicholson stars in this drama about a father seeking revenge for the death of his daughter at the hands of a drunk driver. This film was written and directed by Sean Penn. Penn and Nicholson reprised their director-star relationship in 'The Pledge'.

'A man of power. And a man of peace. Brought together by a chilling event!'
Cry, the Beloved Country. James Earl Jones and Richard Harris star in this film adaptation of Alan Paton's novel by the same name. The setting (and subject) is Apartheid South Africa.

'He came back to settle the score with someone. Anyone. EVERYONE.'
Desperado. This film is a continuation of director Robert Rodriquez's prior independent film, 'El Mariachi'. Antonio Banderas is the central character, a musician who is caught up in some problems by way of mistaken identity. He in turn involves Salma Hayek's character. Cheech Marin and Steve Buscemi also lend performances to the film.

'Sometimes, an accident can be an unhappy woman's best friend.'
Dolores Claiborne. Kathy Bates stars as the title character in this movie based on Stephen King's novel. She arranges for the accidental death of her husband when she finds out he's been sexually abusing their daughter (played in aged form by Jennifer Jason Leigh).

'He's whatever scares you the most.'
The Fear. This horror movie follows a group of 20-somethings to a remote cabin for the weekend. While there, they all tell their deepest fears to a wooden mannequin, and the wooden man then proceeds to enact these fears for each person to the point of his or her death. It was kind of hokey, but did have some scary moments.

'Their greatest battle would be for her love.'
First Knight. Sean Connery and Richard Gere vie for Julia Ormond's favors in this film. Between this and 'Legends of the Fall', it sure seems Julia Ormond has some tough choices to make about her love life.

'You know the name. You know the number.'
GoldenEye. This was Pierce Brosnan's first outing as James Bond, and a rather successful one at that. Izabella Scorupco was the sympathetic woman and Famke Janssen played the femme fatale.

'He was brought back from the dead...but he didn't come back alone.'
Hideaway. Jeff Goldblum stars in this thriller about a man who, after a near-fatal car accident, finds himself psychically connected to a murderer (Jeremy Sisto). The murderer then starts to target Goldblum's daughter (Alicia Silverstone). The movie is based on the Dean R. Koontz novel.
