Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many different species of beaver are there in the world?

Answer: It depends on what biologist you ask.

Traditionally, biologists thought that there were two species: Castor canadensis, the North American beaver, and Castor fiber, the Eurasian beaver. However, since North American beavers introduced to Eurasian populations readily breed with the Eurasian beavers, many biologists consider them to be the same species, Castor fiber.
2. Beavers belong to their own genus: Castor. Why were they given this name?

Answer: It comes from the name of an oily substance that beavers produce.

The oily substance is called castoreum. It comes from two large glands that are aptly called castoreum glands. Beavers use this pungent yellow secretion to mark their territory.
3. Casteroides is the name given to the prehistoric beaver that swam the freshwater lakes of North America long ago. How large was this beaver ancestor?

Answer: About the size of an adult black bear.

Casteroides was monstrous. It probably weighed around 800 pounds and measured 8 to 9 feet in length.
4. How many incisors does a beaver have?

Answer: 4

Two on the top and two on the bottom. They also have 16 molars.
5. True or False: Beavers have an adaptation for underwater woodcutting.

Answer: True

Beavers have a fur flap between their front incisors and back molars to prevent water and wood chips from entering their mouths.
6. A Beaver's diet consists mainly of bark and twigs, but what else do beavers eat?

Answer: All of these

Beavers supplement their fibrous diets with these extra items in the spring and summer.
7. Beavers are coprophagous. What does that mean?

Answer: They eat their own feces.

It's true. Most rodents are actually coprophagous. Beavers eat so much that their digestive system can't absorb all of the nutrients in the food in one pass. Beavers defecate green, then eat the green feces, then defecate brown.
8. True or False: Beavers are often found living in small colonies of 6 or 7 beavers.

Answer: True

Yearling beavers will help raise their younger siblings but will then leave to start a lodge of their own. Therefore, around 6 or 7 beavers will live in a lodge at a time.
9. A beaver's tail is one of its most recognizable characteristics. Which of the following is NOT a way beavers use their tails?

Answer: Towing Sticks, Mud, or Rocks

Beavers do all of their towing with their arms and legs.
10. Finally, everyone knows that the only rodent larger than the beaver is the capybara. But where do capybara live?

Answer: South America

Capybara are some freaky looking animals! Hope you enjoyed my beaver quiz.
