Fun Trivia: M : Manga

Special Sub-Topic: Anime and Manga

Alright, first question: What is the difference between anime and manga?

Manga = comic book; Anime = animated television show/ movie. In Japan, if you were to say "manga" you would be talking specifically about a comic book. It is basically equivalent to the term "comic" in the USA, even though they are different.

Do anime and manga have the same rating system?
In Japan they do, but in the US they don't. In the US, since the English language is so weird, there are different ways to say different things IN different ways. So basically, depending on where you are, what channel you're watching, and other things, the rating system could be different.

These next few questions are only about manga: what do the terms shounen-ai and yaoi refer to?
boyxboy love. Rated 'T' and 'M' respectively.

What term refers to girls' manga?
Shojo manga. Shonen- for boys Seinen- for adult men Josei- for adult women

Choose the correct order of rating from smallest to largest.
    E -Everyone; T -Teen; OT -Older Teen; M -Mature. E- everyone T- teens, 13+ OT- older teens, 16+ M- adult, 18+

From which direction is most manga read?
Right to left. When the manga is originally drawn in Japan, it is drawn in the traditional right to left way that Japanese is read in. Because of that, many artists do not like their work to be "flipped". The "flipped" version might take, say, the word "pig" on a t-shirt or something and flip it to say "gip". That's just an example, obviously, but you get the concept. So most manga that you find is in the original "unflipped" form.

Which of the following draw manga left to right?
Korean. Yes, Korean manga is from left to right. Take "Blade of Heaven" for example.

Some manga need a change in rating after they are translated into English. In which of these cases would a teen manga be shown as an adult anime?"
Anything where the translation includes bad language or suggestive conversation.. For the three wrong answers, they would simply be edited in translation. The other is already translated, and if changed would throw off things such as characterization or plot and such.

It might seem as though all anime is taken from manga. Below are some conditions relating to anime and manga. Choose the INCORRECT statement.
Anime is totally dependant on manga. You don't see them too often here, but there are some anime that have no manga equivalent.

Last but not least, do anime and manga of the same title and story have to stay consistent with each other? (As in story-wise)
Yes, though there are often some differences. If you have an anime and a manga with the same title, same characters, time, and setting, but different plots, it would be a bit confusing, don't you think? Congrats on making it through my quiz!
