Arsenal had a very harsh start to the season, having lost key players over the summer. Among them were captain Cesc Fabregas who was sold to FC Barcelona. Which player was made the new club captain for the 2011-12 season?

Robin van Persie. Robin van Persie (who was appointed vice-captain in the previous season) was given the prestigious armband when Fabregas left. The striker came to Arsenal from Feyenoord in 2004.

On 28th August 2011, things went from bad to worse. Arsenal played away against Manchester United where they suffered their greatest defeat since 1896. What was the final score?

8-2. A very painful day for all Arsenal fans (the last time Arsenal has conceded 8 goals was on 12th December 1896, when they were beaten 8-0 by Loughborough Town). However, the fans kept singing their hearts out in support of their team all through the game. Afterwards, the club decided to refund the tickets of all the traveling fans as a way of saying thank you.

In August 2011, Arsenal also had to qualify for the Champions League. Who was the opponent they had to beat over a two-leg tie?

Udinese. It was a tough tie that Arsenal won 3-1 on aggregate after two goals from Theo Walcott and one from captain Robin van Persie. Arsenal won the first leg 1-0 at home, and the second leg 2-1 away. In the second leg, Udinese scored first to level the tie; goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny pulled off a stunning penalty save from Udinese's captain Antonio Di Natale to keep the Gunners in the game (the score was 1-1 at the time).

By October, things were slowly turning around for the Gunners. On 29th October 2011, Arsenal faced Chelsea away at Stamford Bridge in an amazing game that ended 5-3 in Arsenal's favor. Robin van Persie scored a hat-trick, but who got the other two Arsenal goals?

Santos and Walcott. Andre Santos and Theo Walcott both scored early in the second half, within six minutes of each other. By halftime, the Gunners were trailing 2-1, but Santos levelled the score in the 49th minute, while Walcott put Arsenal in front in the 55th minute.

37. Van Persie scored a whopping 37 goals in total - 2 in the FA Cup, 5 in the UEFA Champions League and 30 in the league. He equalled Thierry Henry's record of 30 league goals in a Premier League season (set in 2003-04).

Arsenal faced the same team twice in less than a month - on 29th November 2011 in the Carling Cup and on 18th December in the league. Both games resulted in a 1-0 defeat for Arsenal. Who was the opponent?

Manchester City. Arsenal were knocked out of the Carling Cup by Manchester City who would be the eventual league champions (their first title since 1968). However, Arsenal got their revenge when they faced Manchester City at home in April. This game also ended in a 1-0 defeat, but this time for City.

In early 2012, Arsenal were struggling again. After losing all of their league games in January and getting knocked out of the FA Cup in February, they were at home to face their local rivals and arch enemies Tottenham Hotspur. After 35 minutes Arsenal were behind 0-2. But what was the final result?

5-2 Arsenal v Tottenham. This was a great comeback from Arsenal and really marked a turning point. Before the game, Tottenham were 10 points ahead of Arsenal in the league table but with this victory, Arsenal managed to reduce the gap to 7 points. Tottenham lost their two following league games as well, and Arsenal ended up overtaking them in the league table and finishing in 3rd place while Tottenham finished 4th.

After beating Blackburn Rovers 7-1 in February, Arsenal went on a winning streak in the league. How many consecutive games did they win?

7. From early February to the end of March 2012, Arsenal beat Blackburn Rovers 7-1, Sunderland 2-1 (A), Tottenham Hotspur 5-2, Liverpool 2-1 (A), Newcastle United 2-1, Everton 1-0 (A) and Aston Villa 3-0. The winning streak ended on 31st March, when Arsenal lost 2-1 away to Queens Park Rangers.

In late April, Arsenal announced that a deal had been agreed to sign an international striker on a long-term contract. Who was the striker?

Lukas Podolski. In May, Lukas Podolski did his first Arsenal interview in which he said that he couldn't wait to play for the club. "Arsenal are a great club, here in Europe and all over the world ... I'm now looking forward to the challenge at my new club and cannot wait to start after Euro 2012," he told the club's official site.

The last day of the season was dramatic all around. Arsenal faced West Bromwich Albion away - a game they had to win to ensure Champions League football for the following season. In a tight game, they managed a narrow 3-2 win. Who scored the third goal that secured Arsenal a top-three finish?

Laurent Koscielny. This was one of the few games where Robin van Persie did not score. Benayoun and Santos got the first and second goal respectively, but it was the French central defender Laurent Koscielny who scored the winner in the 54th minute.
