Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many days after the birth of Christ did Joseph and Mary give him the name Jesus?

Answer: 8

It was required by law that eight days after the birth of a son they would circumcise him and name him. They followed the law and circumcised him and named him Jesus, as the angel had told them to, eight days after his birth. This can be found in Luke 2:21.

Question by Jimmy (J-Zilch).
2. According to the Bible, which animals were specifically mentioned as being present in the stable when Jesus was born? (NKJV text)

Answer: none

While the Bible does not actually mention any animals, it would have been normal practice for the animals to be in the stable. Some animals were probably there, most likely donkeys, cattle, sheep, goats and/or camels.

Question by Rimrunner.
3. In which New Testament book do we read about the angels singing, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."?

Answer: The Bible doesn't state that

Ahhh...

If you thought it was in Luke, read just a bit more carefully. The angels did not SING anything. They SAID these words. Perhaps a bit of a technicality, but in Luke 2:13-14, we can definitely be certain that they were not singing. In fact, I have never read any account of angels singing anywhere in the Bible. But, you say, what about in Revelation, on two different occasions?

Nope, that is not angels singing either. It is God's redeemed; and since angelic beings cannot be redeemed because Christ did not die for them, but only for man, they aren't the ones singing in that book, either.

4. In Matthew 1:20-21, an angel tells Joseph the young woman he is about to marry is pregnant with a child conceived of the Holy Spirit and his name will be Jesus. According to the NIV, the KJV and the NKJV, why was Jesus selected as the name of the child?

Answer: He would save his people from their sins.

The correct answer is that Jesus would save his people from their sins. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible has this to say about Christ's name: "The Greek name Iesous is the equivalent of the Hebrew name Yeshua, meaning 'The Lord Shall Save.' Although a common name among the Jews, the name expresses Jesus' work on earth -- to save and deliver. This is affirmed by the explanation the angel gives to Joseph after telling him to name the virgin child Jesus: 'for He will save His people from their sins'. After Jesus was crucified for the sins of His people and raised from the dead, the early apostles proclaimed Jesus as the only Savior. (Acts 5:31, Acts 13:23.)"

Question by Cowrofl.
5. According to the Bible, Jesus was born on December 25th.

Answer: False

The Bible does not give a date for Jesus' birth, but we know it was almost certainly not December 25th. Most Bible scholars believe he was born in the spring, largely because the shepherds' flocks had new lambs.

6. According to the book of Luke in the KJV Bible, which of these people was the first to be visited by an angel?

Answer: Zacharias

In Luke chapter 1:11-23 Zacharias (or Zechariah) went to the temple to present an offering to the LORD. While he was there an angel came to him and told him he was going to have a son. He didn't believe the angel so he was made mute until his son was born. The angel told him to name his son John. When the child was born, he was therefore named John and his father's speech was restored. The next angel manifestation is in Luke Chapter 1:26 when Gabriel visited Mary. Then it was the turn of the shepherds, mentioned in Luke chapter 2. The visit of the angel to Joseph is mentioned in the gospel of Matthew.

7. According to the Gospel of Matthew in the KJV of the Bible, where did the wise men find the Christ Child?

Answer: In a house in Bethlehem

It was the shepherds who saw the babe in the manger of a stable in Bethlehem.

The second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew is the passage which mentions the visit of the wise men and we know very little about them other than the facts that they came from the East and visited King Herod in Jerusalem before continuing on to Bethlehem and that they found the the child with his parents in the house where they were then staying. Jesus was no longer a babe but is referred to as a child.

Based on what they told King Herod about when the star they had been following had first appeared and the fact that King Herod slaughtered all the male children of two years of age and under in Bethlehem and its surrounding areas, it can be ascertained that Jesus would have been about two years of age.

Matthew 2:11 says, "And when they came into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold and frankincense and myrrh."

Question by Birdman585.
8. According to Luke 2:17-18, what was the *first* thing the shepherds did after they had seen the baby Jesus?

Answer: They spread the news far and wide

"They made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. And all those who heard their story marveled." "The saying which was told them" refers to what the angel had told them in verses 10-12, that this Child was in fact the Christ, the promised Messiah.

Only after this did they return to their flocks, praising God.

Question by Rimrunner.
9. In Matthew's Gospel, where did the angel tell Joseph to flee in order to keep Herod from killing Jesus?

Answer: Egypt

"Now when they (the wise men) had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, 'Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.'" - Matthew 2:13

Matthew went on to say this fulfilled an Old Testament prophecy, "...Out of Egypt I called My son." - Hosea 11:1

Question by wordwalker.
10. When the Magi visited Herod in Matthew 2 of the NIV Bible, what is the reason they gave for wanting to see Jesus?

Answer: They wanted to worship him

At the beginning of Matthew 2, the Magi arrived at Herod's palace and asked him where they might find Jesus because they wanted to worship him. When Herod heard this he went to the chief priests and teachers of the law and asked them where he was. They said that he was in Bethlehem in Judea. He then called the Magi aside and sent them to Bethlehem and told them that, when they found him, they should bring news back to him so that he could go worship him. They went and found the young Jesus in a house in Bethlehem. After their visit, an angel told them not to go back to Herod because he only wanted to kill Jesus, so they went home another way.
