Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many players may one team field at any one time in a CFL game?

Answer: 12

The CFL scrimmages 12 players: on offense 7 of whom must be on the line of scrimmage, and 5 at least one yard off the line.
2. Which one of these NFL quarterbacks never played in the CFL?

Answer: Dan Marino

Joe Thiessman played for Toronto, Warren Moon starred for the Edmonton Eskimos, Joe Kapp played for Calgary and BC, and Dieter Brock toiled for Hamilton and Winnipeg.
3. Which CFL team brought Doug Flutie out of football obscurity and relaunched his hail mary career?

Answer: BC Lions

The Lions brought Flutie out of obscurity in 1991 where he played to a packed BC Place stadium of crowds of 50,000 or more. Three seasons later he was traded to Calgary, and then won 2 Grey Cups with Toronto before jumping to Buffalo in the NFL. BTW - there is no Halifax team in the CFL.
4. Which brother of NFLer Marcus Allen is poised to be the greatest QB ever in the CFL, statistically speaking?

Answer: Damon Allen

Damon Allen currently toils for the BC Lions and will surpass Ron Lancaster in the 2000 season as the most proficient CFL QB ever.
5. Which existing franchise used to share a team 'nickname' with another CFL team for more than 50 years?

Answer: Saskatchewan Roughriders

Saskatchewan shared a nickname with the now defunct (folded in 1995) Ottawa Rough Riders. The former name was borrowed from Teddy Roosevelt's war exploits, while Ottawa's name refers to lumberjacks who ride logs down rivers.
6. How many offensive players are allowed to be in motion at the snap of the ball in the CFL

Answer: 5

The only players required to be 'set' at the time of the snap are the players on the offensive line. Any backfield player can be in any motion that they want - in the NFL only one player may be in motion, and unlike the CFL must be in parallel with the line of scrimmage.
7. Which CFL kicker surpassed George Blanda for kicking longevity and statistics - save for age?

Answer: Lui Passaglia

Lui Passaglia, at 46, retired in 2000 after 25 years in the CFL. Except for his age he surpassed most if not all Blanda's records for kickers in pro football.
8. How many ways are there to score points in the CFL (ie. touchdowns, field goals, etc.)?

Answer: 6

They are: touchdown, one-point conversion, two-point conversion, field goal, safety, and the 'rouge'. The rouge is the awarding of one-point to a team that kicks the ball into the opposition's goal area, and the opposition can neither run nor kick out the ball before it goes dead. It makes for some wild and woolly finishes with no time on the clock in tied games.
9. How do CFL punt receivers avoid being killed by on-rushing opposition players when they receive a punt?

Answer: 5-yard restraining area

The CFL requires the punting team to adhere to a five-yard restraining area around the punt receiver, until, of course, the ball is touched by either the receiving team, the punter, or someone 'on-sides' from the point of punt. Don't laugh, until the 1980s, the receiving team was not allowed to block for the receiver!
10. Who holds the professional football record for touchdowns on punt returns in a career?

Answer: Henry 'Gizmo' Williams

Not only is Henry Willams short, too short (they say) for the NFL, he has had more TDs on punt returns called back because of penalty, than the nearest player to him has total TDs. Gizmo Williams toils for the Edmonton Eskimos.
11. What is the name of the stadium in which the Edmonton Eskimos play their home games?

Answer: Commonwealth Stadium

Clarke Stadium is the old Edmonton football grounds. Commonwealth Stadium was built for the Commonwealth Games and seats over 50,000.
12. Which city had the first CFL franchise outside of Canada?

Answer: Sacramento

The Sacramento Gold Miners played their first season in the early 1990s to prepare for an ill fated expansion to the USA, which saw no more than 5 teams in any one season. Sacramento eventually relocated to San Antonio and Las Vegas folded after one year. Teams in Shreveport, Memphis and Birmingham had mixed success. Baltimore went ga-ga over CFL football and would have kept them if the Ravens had not come to the NFL.
13. What was the original name of the Baltimore CFL franchise in the 1990s?

Answer: Colts

Originally the Baltimore CFL franchise was to be the 'Colts'. However, copyright problems ensued and their franchise played most of their games with no nickname at all. They did, however, finally settle on Stallions, thinking them not too different than Colts.
14. Which CFL team was, at times, not geographically located in the CFL division in which it played?

Answer: Winnipeg Blue Bombers

After the Montreal Concorde folded in the 1980s, that left 5 teams in the West and 3 in the East. Winnipeg, although in one of the western provinces, was relocated to the Eastern Conference in 1987 to maintain a balance in the league. Following the failed US expansion, the folding of the Ottawa franchise, and the relocating of Baltimore to Montreal, Winnipeg again took its awkward place amongst eastern Canadians in 1997.

It returned to the West Division in 2014.
15. Which person below was the first one to appear as a coach in both a Grey Cup game and in a Super Bowl?

Answer: Bud Grant

Bud Grant guided the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a Grey Cup game that was fogged out - and had to be played on two separate days. He also had a less than stellar Super Bowl record with the Minnesota Vikings.
