Special Sub-Topic: Down Periscope

Lt. Commander Thomas Dodge finally gets command of his own submarine. What is the name of the sub?

SS Stingray. After twenty years in the Navy, Lt. Dodge finally receives a command. But the SS Stingray turns out to be a rust bucket that hasn't seen action since the Korean War. After lots of work, the crew has her shining like a new penny. The Pampanito is the name of the actual submarine used in the movie. The Acadia and the Denali are actually ships, not subs.

What is Lt. Dodge doing at the beginning of the movie that lands him in hot water with his commander?
Playing golf. Lt. Thomas Dodge is not every commander's idea of the perfect seaman. He's impulsive and has unorthodox ideas, such as playing golf from the top of the submarine as they drift pass a golf course.

What does Lt. Pascoe say is holding the submarine together?
Bird droppings. This is one of my favorite lines in the whole movie. When Lt. Dodge asks Pascoe what he thinks of the sub, he says, "I feel I need a tetanus shot just from looking at her, the only thing holding her together are the bird droppings, sir!". Classic!

What item of clothing is Spots missing?
Shoes. Seaman Stanley "Spots" Sylvesterson will place a bet on just about anything. Unfortunately not everything pays off for him. Lt. Dodge: "What happened to your shoes?" Spots: "Did you ever bet on a sure thing and the horse gets a cramp?"

What is the name of the submarine Lt. Dodge and his crew are competing against?
Orlando. Lt. Dodge is second in command of the Orlando when he receives his new commission. The commander of the Orlando, Carl Knox, is competent, but in a quiet way. Admiral Graham purposely pits the two subs against each other for a war game.

What is Sonar's specialty?
Whale impressions. Seaman Second Class E.T. Lovacelli, aka Sonar, not only has incredible hearing, but can also do whale impressions. Lt. Dodge turns to Sonar and his talents to get them out of a tight spot. As he performs his impression of a whale, the other team believes the performance and leaves the area, preventing the crew from losing the war game.

Who is the father of Engineman First Class Brad Stepanak?
Admiral Winslow. Vice Admiral Dean Winslow is trying to put his son on the straight and narrow, and believes that working on a submarine might just be the thing. Engineman First Class Stepanak (Winslow, Stepanak is his mother's name) has other ideas and does just about everything to be tossed out of the commission. Everything, that is, except mess things up for his crewmates. When it comes to them, he's the man for the job.

What does Lt. Dodge do after the attempted mutiny by Lt. Pascoe?
Make him walk the plank. Lt. Martin Pascoe is so convinced of the possibility of his success as a Commander that he tries to take over command from Lt. Dodge. Dodge and the other crew members make him think he has to walk the plank, but in actuality he falls into the net of a fishing boat.

What is Nitro wearing on his shoulder when the crew are in pirate costume?
Chicken. The crew are all made up to look like pirates, and Buckman sees a whole, raw chicken tied to Nitro's shoulder with a rope. Buckman: "What is that?" Nitro: "It's a parrot." Buckman: "Well don't let anything happen to it, that's tonight's dinner."

What is the name of the ship that Lt. Dodge has them hide under to get ahead of the other sub?
Denali. This is one of the coolest parts of the movie. They maneuver their sub right between the props of the Denali to hide from the other sub. This is also Dive Officer Lt. Lake's time to shine, proving to herself she can do more than she thinks she can. Thanks for playing, I hope you enjoyed the quiz!
