Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the original name of what is now called the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways?

Answer: National System of Interstate and Defense Highways

The Eisenhower Interstate System was founded to provide a systematic grid of highways throughout the US. The system includes all interstates in the contiguous 48 states and the 3 interstates in Hawaii. There are also interstates in Alaska and Puerto Rico, and they are officially part of the Eisenhower Interstate System, but this is only on paper as there is nowhere along the road that has interstate shields to say that it is an interstate. For information on the interstates, a good site to visit is www.interstate-guide.com.
2. What do interstates ending in "0" signify?

Answer: They are major east-west routes.

There are seven of these interstates: I-10 (Santa Monica, CA to Jacksonville, FL); I-20 (near Kent, TX to Florence, SC); I-30 (Ft Worth, TX to Little Rock AR); I-40 (Barstow, CA to Wilmington, NC); I-70 (Cove Fort, UT to Baltimore, MD); I-80 (San Francisco, CA to Ridgefield Park, NJ); I-90 (Seattle, WA to Logan International Airport, Boston, MA).
3. What states does I-8 pass through?

Answer: California and Arizona

I-8 begins at Sunset Cliffs Blvd near I-5 and downtown San Diego, California along the Pacific Ocean and ends at its junction with I-10 southeast of Casa Grande, Arizona.
4. 3-digit interstates follow the same numbering pattern as 1 and 2-digit interstates.

Answer: False

With 3-digit interstates, if the first number (ex. the "4" in I-405) is odd, then the interstate will only have one end connected to another interstate. If the first number is an even number, it should be connected at both sides to an interstate.
5. In what year was the Eisenhower Interstate System introduced?

Answer: 1956

There are over 65,000 miles of road in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.
6. In what state is the highest elevation that an interstate is located at?

Answer: Colorado

I-70 passes through the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado at 11,192 feet above sea level - over two miles high!
7. In what state does an interstate highway pass through the lowest elevation?

Answer: California

I-8 passes near El Centro, California at about 47 feet below sea level, though the actual elevation has not been measured.
8. What infamous interstate in San Francisco was torn down in 1991?

Answer: I-480

The Embarcadero Freeway, I-480, was damaged during the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. Since the double decker freeway was an eyesore to those wanting a view of the waterfront, the city of San Francisco decided to tear it down in 1991 and build a beautiful tree lined street and waterfront area in it's place.
9. Which other states and/or territories also contain roads that are unsigned interstates, but fall under the Interstate System?

Answer: Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico

A-1, A-2, A-3, and A-4 all are Alaskan interstates, and PR-1, PR-2, and PR-3 are the Puerto Rican interstates. A-1 goes from Anchorage to the Canadian border in Yukon Territory, A-2 runs from Tok Junction to Fairbanks, A-3 runs from Soldotna to Anchorage, and A-4 runs from Palmer to Fairbanks. PR-1 and PR-2 both go from Ponce to San Juan using separate routes through the island, and PR-3 runs from Ceiba to San Juan. All are unsigned interstates.
10. How many interstates run completely from the Mexican border to the Canadian border?

Answer: 1

I-5 is the only interstate that runs completely, without a break, from border to border. It's southern terminus is at the Mexican Point of Entry south of San Diego, CA at Tijuana, Baja California Norte. The northern terminus is at the Canadian Point of Entry in Blaine, WA about 30-45 minutes south of Vancouver, British Columbia. I-35 is sometimes thought to run completely from border to border, but in fact it only has a southern terminus at the Mexican Point of Entry in Laredo, TX, while its northern terminus is at the junction with Minnesota Highway 61 in Duluth, MN, about 150 miles from the Canadian border. If Highway 61 were made an interstate, it could possibly be the extension to I-35 that would take it all the way to the Canadian border, but that is yet to happen.
