Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the United States, most of the state of Delaware is found on this peninsula, along with parts of two others. It separates the Atlantic Ocean (to its east) from the Chesapeake Bay (to its west) and the smaller Delaware Bay (to the northeast). What is it called?

Answer: Delmarva Peninsula

The name Delmarva, which has been used as early as the year 1913, comes from the names of the three states which lie on the peninsula: Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. The Chesapeake and Delaware Canal cuts through the isthmus in the north. The peninsula has been colonized by at least three different countries, having been given such names as Zwaanendael, New Sweden, and New Netherland.
2. You'll find this peninsula in the southwest of the island Hispaniola, emerging near the capital city Port-au-Prince and extending into the Caribbean Sea not far from Cuba. What is this peninsula, whose name translates to "shark" in Spanish?

Answer: Tiburon Peninsula

This peninsula is located entirely in the country of Haiti, which shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. It encloses Haiti's Gulf of Gonâve in the south, separating it from the Caribbean Sea, and helps give Haiti the second longest coastline in the Greater Antilles region of the Caribbean, after Cuba.

The wrong choices all include words for "shark" in languages such as Catalan, French, and Basque.
3. This peninsula helps enclose the Gulf of Venezuela in the west along with the Paraguaná Peninsula in the east. It is occupied mostly by Colombia and partially by Venezuela. Which peninsula is it?

Answer: Guajira Peninsula

The Guajira Peninsula is home to the Colombian Punta Gallinas (Cape Chicken), the northernmost point of South America's mainland. The Guanahacabibes is a peninsula in the extreme west of the island of Cuba, while the Valdes Peninsula is the site of a nature reserve in eastern Argentina.

The Yucatan Peninsula is a large prominence mostly occupied by Mexico which separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean Sea.
4. Which Welsh peninsula, part of the City and County of Swansea, juts out into the Bristol Channel, specifically between Carmarthen Bay and Swansea Bay?

Answer: Gower

Gower Peninsula is a popular coastline for tourists and has many caves. One of these, Paviland Cave in 1823, was the site of the first human fossil to be found in the world. It was that of the Red Lady of Paviland, which was later found to actually be the skeleton of a young male that was dyed in red ochre.

The Llŷn Peninsula is a larger peninsula in northern Wales, located just below the island of Anglesey. Kintyre is a peninsula in Scotland, while Spurn Point is in England.
5. One of France's 27 administrative regions occupies this peninsula, which lies between the English Channel (to the north) and Bay of Biscay (to the south). The peninsula shares its name with the administrative region. What is it called?

Answer: Brittany

Bretagne in French, this region and peninsula got its name from the British settlers who came there during an invasion of Britain between the fifth and seventh centuries. It may be called the Breton peninsula and is even sometimes referred to as "Lesser" or "Little" Britain. Brittany is home to a large number of cultural, musical, and maritime festivals and maintains a significant Celtic identity.
6. Azerbaijan's capital and largest city, Baku, rests on which peninsula extending into the Caspian Sea? It comes from the Persian words meaning "place of salty water".

Answer: Absheron

The end of the Absheron peninsula is known for ravines and salt lakes, which resonates with the Persian origin of the name, "Abshouran". This name is made up of the words for "water" (ab) and "salty" (shour) made plural by the suffix "-an".

About 55 km (34 mi) from the tip of Absheron lies a city "built on stilts in the Caspian Sea". Neft Daşları, or the Oil Rocks, started as an oil platform, the first one in Azerbaijan and the first offshore one in the world. It eventually became a town of about 5,000 inhabitants with more than 300 km (190 mi) of streets. At first it was built with sunken ships for a foundation, and later on heaps of dirt and even landfill. Serious construction projects during the late 1950s and 1970s left Neft Daşları with buildings like bakeries, hostels, lemonade workshops and more. Its population is made up of men who work week-long shifts on the artificial islands.

7. The peninsula called Kathiawar is located entirely in a state called Gujarat and is bounded by the Gulf of Kutch and Gulf of Khambhat. In which country is Kathiawar?

Answer: India

The name Kathiawar may be used synonymously with Saurashtra, a region occupying the same tract of land. This land is home to The Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, a significant protected area in Asia, which houses animals such as spotted deer, nilgai (blue bull), blackbucks, and just over 400 of the last remaining Asiatic lions in the wild. These lions are smaller than the African lions. African lions have a significantly larger habitat and population due to a long history of Asiatic lions being a favorite hunting animal in India.

Mahatma Gandhi was born in Porbandar, a city on the coast of Kathiawar facing the Arabian Sea.
8. Which Chinese peninsula separates the Bohai Sea from the Yellow Sea and shares its name with the province in which it is found?

The Chukchi Peninsula, also called the Chukotka or Chukotski Peninsula, is home to the Chukchi people and the easternmost point of the continent at Cape Dezhnyov. It is part of the federal subject of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, which ranks 82nd (of 83 federal subjects) in population.

The Kara Sea is one of several located to the north of Russia, while the Beaufort Sea is to the north of Alaska and part of Canada. The Kola Peninsula, part of Russia, is geographically in Europe.
10. This peninsula, one of many significant ones on the island of New Guinea, is also called the Bird's Head Peninsula. It is part of Indonesia's Province of West Papua and is located in the northwest of the island.

The peninsula partially encloses the relatively large Cenderawasih Bay in the east and is separated from the Bomberai Peninsula to the south by Bintuni Bay.

The Karpass Peninsula is in Cyprus, the Malay in Southeast Asia, and the Salento makes the "heel" of Italy's "boot".
