John. Nobody but their former school teacher refers to him as John. He, his brother, and Jill all left the school after the accident and Jack's mom taught them.

When "Jill came tummbling after" what did she break?

her back. It was a sledding accident. Jack decided to go down the dangerous hill and they obviously got hurt.
