Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is not mobile Discworld lithology? (i.e. A troll)

Answer: Igneous Cutwell

'We flattened all the wolves around here years ago,' said the troll. 'Old Grandad did, anyway.' ("Light Fantastic")

'Beef ith an odd name for a troll.' 'He likes the sound of it,' said Nanny. 'It's like a man calling himself Rocky' ("Carpe Jugulum")

'The Patrician's a supreme ruler,' Carrot pointed out. He nodded at a passing troll. 'G'day, Mr Carbuncle.' ("Men at Arms") - A carbuncle is a deep-red garnet, unfaceted and convex.

Igneous Cutwell is the Sto Lat resident wizard. ("Mort")
2. Troll brains - being silicon based - work better when cool. What was used to help Detritus think better?

Answer: A clockwork, fan-cooled helmet

Acting-Constable Cuddy made a special clockwork thinking helmet for him. "These big bits are cooling fins, see? Painted black. I glommed a clockwork engine off my cousin, and this fan here blows air over-" (Men at Arms)

An Imp called Peltier - well Maxwell had his demon... In 1834 a Roundworld physicist, Jean Peltier, discovered that by applying an electric current through two dissimilar metals, heat could be expelled at one junction and absorbed at the other. But since harnessing the lightning has not been possible on Discworld (lightning is the spears hurled by the thunder giants when they fight) it wouldn't work there.

There are Squirrel Cage fans on Roundworld, so I expect there may be some on Discworld, but that's not what was used here.

And an icebucket is too easy!
3. What, technically, is a pile of potters clay called on Discworld?

Answer: Heap

"Is there a special name for it when it's piled up like that?" said Cheery timorously. ... "Yeah," said Igneous. "Dat's technic'ly wot we calls a heap." ("Feet of Clay")

Crank is clay with ground up old pottery. Lehmstapel is a pile of clay in German. d'Kaolingus just something trolls do in private.
4. What was the name of the Troll who banged rocks together in the "Band with Rocks In" - before he changed it to something more suitable for the music business?

Answer: Lias

"I think I change my name," said Lias, eventually. "I mean ... Lias? Not a good name for the music business."

"What'll you change it to?" said Glod.

"I thought ... don't laugh ... I thought ... Cliff?" said Lias.
("Soul Music")
5. Trolls eat rocks, but not just any rocks. Which of the following would a troll LIKE to eat?

Answer: Coke and Ash

'Now he's doing troll food too,' said Glod. 'Decided to put aside ethnic differences in the cause of making more money. Five types of coal, seven types of coke and ash, sediments to make you dribble. You'll like it.' ("Soul Music")

The troll inspected the tray suspiciously, and lifted up a bun.
'Urrh, yuk,' he said, 'it's got all ammonites in it! Yuk!'("Men at Arms")

'There's bloody quartz all through dis granite,' said another troll, towering over Dibbler. 'Clogs the arteries, quartz.'("Men at Arms")

Trolls eat people? 'No they don't,' said Cohen, sliding awkwardly off his horse and massaging his knees. 'Well-known mishapprehenshion, that ish. Trolls never ate anybody.' 'No?' 'No, they alwaysh spit the bitsh out. Can't digesht people, see?' ("Light Fantastic")
6. Match the Troll to the Roundworld Mineral: Trolls: Blue John, Bauxite, Chrysoprase, Ruby Mineral: Quartz, Corundum, Fluorite, Aluminium Oxide

Answer: Blue John=Fluorite, Bauxite=Aluminium Oxide, Chrysoprase=Quartz, Ruby=Corundum

Blue John is a very local name for a blue variety of fluorite found at Castleton in Derbyshire. Bauxite is the primary ore for smelting aluminium - it's a mixture of aluminium oxide and hydroxide often with iron oxides. Chrysoprase is an apple green variety of microcrystalline quartz or chalcedony. Ruby is, of course, a gemstone variety of corundum.
7. Chrysoprase is a hard troll to cross. Just how hard is he (on the Roundworld Mohs scale)?

Answer: 7

Chrysoprase is a nice light green variety of chalcedony or microcrystalline quartz, with a hardness beteween 6.5 and 7.4.

Mohs scale is a comparative scale that goes from 1 for Talc to 10 for Diamond
8. In "Feet of Clay", which troll had his ear nailed to a wall for selling slab to troll kids?

Answer: Hardcore

The incident is reported in "Feet of Clay".
Coalface was a privy cleaner and also Chrysoprase's "righthand troll", but escaped this time. Detritus was the nailer, not the nailee. Crysoprase was the employer of ... Hardcore ... who was aurally fixated on masonry.
9. Match the troll to the occupation: Troll: Detritus, Coalface, Chrysoprase, Ruby Occupation: Gang Boss, Star, Privy Cleaner, Splatter

Answer: Detritus=Splatter, Coalface=Privy Cleaner, Chrysoprase=Crime Boss, Ruby=Star

Detritus was the Splatter (like a bouncer but Trolls use more force) at the Mended Drum before he became a Watchman. ("Guards! Guards!

"Nobby: 'He's arrested Coalface the troll. You know, captain? The privy cleaner." ("Men at Arms")

Chrysoprase was the evil Crime Boss whose henchtrolls (Coalface and Hardcore) sold Slab on the streets. 'Dey say he's a godfather in the Breccia,' said Cliff.'Now now, that's never been proved ...' 'Only 'cos it's very hard to prove things when someone's scooped a hole in your head and buried your feet in it!' ("Soul Music")

Ruby was the singing star in "Moving Pictures." Her songs include "Amber and Jasper" and "Vunce again I am fallink in luf".
10. Slab is a Discworld drug that has a nasty effect on Troll brains. Jus' say 'Aarrghaarrghpleeassennono-noUGH' What are the ingredients of Slab?

Answer: Chloric ammonium with radium

Slab is Roundworld slang for Crack (cocaine); however, cocaine isn't an ingredient of Discworld Slab, although it was once was an ingredient of Roundworld Coke. Ammonium Sulfate, which is foul smelling but harmless, was put in to Coke MagiCans so buyers couldn't tell which cans had prizes before opening them. Which sounds like something a deranged Discworld mind might have come up with - but isn't!

Molten sulphur on Coke with phosphoric acid (with an umbrella in it) is what Detritus drinks at the Bucket. Coke has phosphoric acid in it already but I expect Detritus likes extra.

Caffeine and carbonic acid are ingredients of Coke but not of Slab.

Detritus: "It are chloric ammonium an' radium mixed up. It give your head a tingle but melts troll brains." ("Feet of Clay") And it's not found in Coke.
