Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The earliest type of ship, that used many men rowing large oars were called what? (Sails were also used, but due to their unreliability, oar power usually drove the ship.)

Answer: galleys

Galleys were still used, to a certain extent, well into the eighteenth century. Dromons were galleys which used a primitive flamethrower to set enemy ships on fire. Dugout canoes were the very earliest and most basic kind of boat. I hope I don't have to explain dreadnoughts.
2. In 480 B.C., the Athenian navy, under Themistocles, destroyed half the Persian fleet at what great naval battle?

Answer: Salamis

3. Longships were built by which great explorers, warriors, and traders?

Answer: Vikings

For their time, the Vikings were highly advanced seafarers. It is generally agreed among historians that Viking explorers reached the coast of North America around 1000 AD.
4. Turkish influence in Europe was much diminished by their defeat at the hands of the Venetians, allied with the Papal States and Spain, in what battle in 1571? (This was also the last major battle utilizing galleys.)

Answer: Lepanto

5. Which of the following countries was NOT a rising naval power in the sixteenth century?

Answer: Italy

The Netherlands, France, Spain, and Britain were all competing with each other for colonies at this time, and subsequently, navies were of paramount importance. Monarchs scrambled to outdo each other and come up with the next great thing in navies.
6. The English had more ships in the battle of the Spanish Armada.

Answer: True

Oddly enough, the English had a numerical superiority in the battle. The Spanish, under the Duke of Medina Sidonia, had 130 ships, while the English had 193.
7. Who commanded the English fleet that fought the Spanish Armada?

Answer: Lord Howard of Effingham

8. With which country did England fight a series of three naval wars in the seventeenth century? (In the first of these wars, the concept of dividing a fleet into squadrons came into use.)

Answer: the Netherlands

Both the English, under Robert Blake, and the Dutch, under Martin Tromp, divided their fleet into squadrons, which assembled with ships in line, or side by side. And although the English did win the wars, the Dutch were still a sea power to be reckoned with into the 1800s.
9. On October 21, 1805, off the coast of Spain, a British fleet of 27 ships under Admiral Horatio Nelson defeated a combined French and Spanish fleet of 33 ships under the command of which admiral?

Answer: Villeneuve

Napoleon hoped that he could draw the British fleet off into the West Indies, and he would be able to invade England. When Villeneuve didn't pull it off, he attacked the British, and lost nearly half his ships taken or destroyed, while the British didn't lose one.
10. In 1807, what British ship attacked the U.S.S. Chesapeake and inflicted 21 casualties and boarded it to search for deserted British seamen?

Answer: Leopard

The Leopard affair epitomized the peacetime conflict between the British and the Americans and eventually was one of the reasons that America declared war on Britain in 1812.
11. In what year did Robert Fulton first build his first steam powered vessel?

Answer: 1807

Fulton's first steamboat, the Clermont, made its maiden voyage on the Hudson River in 1807.
12. In the Crimean War, what innovation allowed the Russians to defeat Turkish ships easily?

Answer: exploding shells

13. What kind of ship was the fastest trading vessel of the mid-1800s and was developed by American shipwrights in the 1830s and 1840s?

Answer: clipper

Clipper ships were particularly valued for the thriving trade between the American Northeast and the Orient.
14. Before World War I, which nation was not one of the three greatest sea-powers?

Answer: Russia

Great Britain had the most powerful navy, followed by Germany, and then the United States. However, by the end of World War I, Germany was eliminated (at least temporarily) from the list of sea-powers.
15. What was the name of Admiral Horatio Nelson's flagship?

Answer: Victory

Nelson died aboard the Victory in 1805, at the Battle of Trafalgar. Even at that time, the Victory was a very old ship, but still quite functional in the line of battle.
