Special Sub-Topic: Once Is Not Enough
Jeff Beck has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. Once as a solo artist and again as a member of which power group?
The Yardbirds& yardbirds. Jeff Beck is a guitar virtuoso in every aspect of the word. His first induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was in 1992 when The Yardbirds were inducted. He was again inducted in 2009 as a solo artist. Jimmy Page, his former bandmate in The Yardbirds, presented him to the 24th annual awards dinner. Although Beck isn't always mentioned in the same breath as some of his "guitar god" counterparts, his work on solo albums such as "Wired" and "Blow by Blow" has cemented his place in rock history as a legendary guitarist.
George Harrison was obviously the guitarist in one of the most respected rock groups of all time, The Beatles, but he also provided the world with 11 incredible solo albums, each with messages of faith, spirituality and peace. His first induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was when The Beatles were included in the third induction class of 1988. He was again inducted as a solo artist in 2004. For which of his solo albums did Mr. Harrison win a Grammy for Album of the Year?
The Concert for Bangladesh. The year 1971 was a tumultuous one for the Bengali people. The India-Pakistan War left thousands upon thousands of people from Bangladesh as refugees. Ravi Shankar, the Bengali sitarist who had been a major influence on Harrison, called on his friend to help organize a benefit concert to provide aid to the Bengali people. Acting quickly and with limited resources, Harrison assembled a fine cast of all-stars to perform a concert at Madison Square Gardens in New York City. His old bandmate Ringo Starr, his friend Eric Clapton, piano players Billy Preston and Leon Russell, Badfinger and even Bob Dylan all showed up to lend their support. The result was nearly a quarter million dollars raised for the people of Bangladesh and a Grammy award for George Harrison.
George had asked all of the former Beatles to attend the concert, but Paul McCartney declined outright. The bad taste left in his mouth from the break-up and the legal battle that was ongoing to dissolve the band had left him bitter to the idea. John Lennon was asked by Harrison to perform, with the stipulation that Yoko Ono not participate, and Lennon agreed to the terms. However, two days before the event, he left New York after a spat with Ono which was prompted by her not being able to perform. This may have been the last opportunity that all four members of The Beatles to appear together had it happened.
Talk about your over achieving rock god, Eric Clapton was inducted not once, not twice, but on three separate occasions. He punched his ticket to rock immortality in consecutive years as a member of The Yardbirds (1992) and Cream (1993). He was again called to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 when he was inducted as a solo artist. Of the following, which band was Eric Clapton never a member?
Buffalo Springfield. Buffalo Springfield never featured Eric Clapton as a member, but a couple other Rock and Roll Hall of Famers were in the band. Neil Young and Stephen Stills were part of the band that released classic hits such as "For What It's Worth" and "Rock and Roll Woman".
Eric Clapton's path to the top of rock and roll's Mount Olympus was not always an easy one. Battles with drugs, alcohol and personal tragedies all slowed down Clapton's progression, but in the end, his perseverance paid off. Clapton is easily recognized as one of the most influential and talented artists to ever pick up an instrument. His work from "461 Ocean Boulevard" in 1974 to 1992's "Unplugged" has proven his veritable worth to the world of rock music.
Neil Young is another artist to have struck gold twice by being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as both a solo artist, and as a member of the rock group Buffalo Springfield. Not only is Neil Young a gifted musician, songwriter and singer, he is also an activist for farmers aid and has even started a school for children with various physical disabilities. What is the name of this school?
The Bridge School. The Bridge School is located in Mountain View, California. The Bridge School was founded to help children with verbal or physical ailments. Neil Young has three children, two of which have cerebral palsy and the other suffers from epilepsy. Neil Young has hosted the Bridge School concerts annually since 1987. Some of the best and most famous musicians have performed for this benefit over the years. Sammy Hagar, Tom Petty, Elton John, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers are just a few of the hundreds of acts to perform for this concert. This concert is special because most of the artists perform acoustically.
The Jackson 5 were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 by Diana Ross. Michael Jackson was inducted for the second time in 2001, this time the boy band N'Sync were the presenters. Michael Jackson's most famous body of work can be found on the album "Thriller". The album featured several famous musicians performing with Jackson. Which of these were not included?
Slash. Paul McCartney performed the duet "The Girl is Mine" with Michael. Eddie Van Halen performed the guitar solo on the song "Beat It". Janet Jackson performed backing vocals on the song "PYT". Although Slash appeared on the album "Dangerous", he did not lend his talents to the "Thriller" album. In fact, Slash played two songs on the "Dangerous" album, "Give In to Me" and "Black or White". Michael Jackson liked to surround himself with talented people, and including talented artists on his albums was common. Steve Porcaro, Quincy Jones, Steve Stevens, R. Kelly, Boys II Men, The Notorious B.I.G., Nile Rodgers, Steve Lukather and Babyface are just some of the many talented people Michael included on his recordings.
Most artists who are two-time inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame go in as a member of a band and then as a solo artist. In the case of David Crosby, that's not the case. Crosby was inducted in 1997 as a member of Crosby, Stills and Nash, but he was already a member. Which band did he first join the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of?
The Byrds. The Byrds were one of the best acts to meld music from the British Invasion with folk rock. The result? Hit songs such as "Mr. Tambourine Man", "Eight Miles High". "Turn! Turn! Turn!" and "So You Want to be a Rock and Roll Star".
Paul Simon is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist and a member of Simon and Garfunkel. One of Simon's more popular songs as a solo artist is the catchy "You Can Call Me Al". Which alumnus of the television show "Saturday Night Live" appeared in the video for this song?
Chevy Chase. Chevy Chase is a long time friend of Paul Simon's, so it was a natural fit for him to be in the video. Paul Simon has a long term love affair with "Saturday Night Live". He has appeared on the show over a dozen times as either host or musical guest. In one of the most dramatic moments of the show's history, Paul Simon performed the song "The Boxer" in front of members of New York's police and fire departments just a short time after the September 11 terrorist attacks. The city was still recovering from the tragedy, and many attribute the show's resilience as a major step in the healing process for so many affected by the events. Mayor Rudy Giuliani has frequently cited the long time comedy program as proving the spirit of New Yorkers in even the most difficult of times.
Many people have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on multiple occasions, but only one of these men were inducted twice in the same night as a member of two different groups? Do you know who holds this honor?
Stephen Stills. Crosby, Stills and Nash and Buffalo Springfield were both inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on the same night in 1997. As Stephen Stills was a member of both groups, he got to approach the stage twice to be honored. In addition to being a member of these bands, Stills has had a successful solo career as well. His catalog of songs as a solo artist includes "Love the One You're With" and "Sit Yourself Down". Another of Stills' projects was a band titled Manassas, which paired Stills with Chris Hillman, who had previously been in The Byrds.
A lot of people know Paul McCartney's legacy as a rock musician with his work in The Beatles and Wings, not to mention his work as a solo artist. Many people may not know that his work extends outside the realm of rock music and includes some pretty eclectic avant garde electronic music. Along with Youth, bassist from the UK rock outfit Killing Joke, McCartney has recorded some great electronic music. Which name did they take for these recordings?
The Fireman. The Fireman is a wonderful creative outlet for McCartney. The duo have released some great music on albums such as "Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest" and "Rushes". Often, McCartney will provide special songs as limited downloads for people who contribute to certain charities.
Many people don't realize that McCartney has a long history of recording avant garde and experimental music. Way back in 1977, McCartney released an album which basically mirrored his solo album "Ram". He recorded the song under the name Percy "Thrills" Thrillington. Another experimental album was "Liverpool Sound Collage", which was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Alternative Music Album Category.
Clyde McPhatter is another multiple inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His work as a solo artist and as a member of the Drifters ensured his proper placement among his peers. McPhatter was so revered as a singer that he was given the rare opportunity to establish his own group and sign a deal with one of the most prominent record labels of the time. Who was the gentlemen who gave Mr. McPhatter this opportunity?
Ahmet Ertegun. I would be remiss not to include Ahmet Ertegun somewhere in a quiz about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The award which was previously given to non-performers (record producers, engineers, A&R people and similar) was renamed the Ahmet Ertegun Award in 2008. Ahmet Ertegun was co-founder of Atlantic Records which he started in 1947 with Herb Abramson. The importance of Atlantic Records in the development of rock and roll as a genre is great. Mr. Ertegun was responsible for signing acts as varied as Aretha Franklin, Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Yes, Bobby Darin and Ben E. King.
