Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jiminy Cricket's story that he tells us begins when he discovers Geppetto's shop, and goes inside to warm himself. While there, he meets a beautiful person, who gives him what?

Answer: New clothes

When we first see Jiminy, he wears old clothes, tattered and torn from the top of his tall hat to the tips of his toes sticking out from his battered shoes. The Blue Fairy must have thought his attire unsuitable for his important job and endows him with beautiful new clothes.

From the very start of the film, Jiminy is given the duty by the Blue Fairy to accompany Pinocchio as he strives to become a real boy. Sometimes, Jiminy finds it very hard to keep up with Pinocchio, as he's quite an active puppet. Pinocchio's troubles begin when Jiminy fails to wake up and accompany the live puppet to school.
2. Disney got the story for "Pinocchio" from reading a story by a noted author. Who is he?

Answer: Carlo Collodi

Walt Disney got his idea from the 1883 story by Collodi, when it was serialized in a magazine. He thought it would make a great picture to follow his "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", and rightly so, it seems. The character, Pinocchio, has appeared in many stories and media through the last centuries.

As often happens, the Disney film strays far from the original book.
3. This character from "Pinocchio", who swallowed Geppetto, Cleo and Figaro, is a __________ named __________. Which pair of words complete this sentence?

Answer: whale, Monstro

We must ask, what DID happen to Monstro? No one knows for sure, but I would guess that he swam away, looking for a better meal and peacefully pursuing his whale's life. (Although we last see Monstro when he crashes into some rocks while trying to kill our heroes).

In the movie, the trio plus Pinocchio and Jiminy are sneezed out of the whale after setting a fire in his stomach.
4. Speaking of Figaro, Geppetto's sweet black and white kitten, in what cozy bed does he sleep on the night we first meet him?

Answer: In Geppetto's bed

Figaro begins the night in his own cozy bed, but Geppetto asks him to open the window. When he does they notice a beautiful object in the sky, which leads to a significant wish. After things calm down, Figaro cuddles in with Geppetto.

Figaro would never sleep in Cleo's castle - in a fishbowl. And I don't believe sleeping bags were in use during the time in which "Pinocchio" is set.

From time to time in my life, I have obtained a black and white kitten. His or her name has always been none other than "Figaro". My present Figaro is about 14 years old, and has never met a whale.

The operatic character of Figaro has figured in popular operas, one of the most famous being, "The Barber of Seville".
5. Frightening for some younger viewers is when some bad boys, among them Lampwick, are turned into animals to work in mines. What kind of animals do they become?

Answer: Donkeys

Today, some critics fear that this part of the movie is politically incorrect. Perhaps, if the movie was made today, this scene would not occur. Others wonder what the flap is about - it's just a movie. What do you think?

The change of form takes place when the boys are taken to "Pleasure Island" where at first they have fun by being naughty and doing such things as smoking cigars. They soon wish the fun hadn't ended in such a horrible way.
6. In my opinion, one of the best Disney songs ever is "When You Wish Upon a Star" as sung by Jiminy Cricket. Where is Jiminy when we first see him?

Answer: In a room with a large volume of the book "Pinocchio".

The movie opens with the song in the background of the credits. The first scene begins with Jiminy beginning to tell us the story of "Pinocchio".

The song, especially the first few notes of the melody, has become a theme for all things Disney, from the theme parks to the cruises, and everything in between. The song by Ned Washington and Leigh Harline has become a true classic.

Eddie Carrol replaced Cliff Edwards, the original voice of Jiminy Cricket, as the voice of Jiminy after the l960's and Edwards' death.
7. The most beautiful human creature in "Pinocchio" is the Blue Fairy. After Geppetto wishes for Pinocchio to be a real boy, she descends from a star to teach him right from wrong. Her advice is to "always let your ________ be your guide". What word is missing from the quote?

Answer: conscience

In the view of the Blue Fairy, to learn right from wrong is the only way that Pinocchio can become a real boy. And is he ever tested! He finds many tests ahead of him, such as kidnapping and imprisonment. Then comes the real test... can he pass?
8. After Gepetto creates his puppet Pinocchio, he quickly wants him to be a real boy. What does Gepetto see that causes him to wish his puppet could be a real boy?

Answer: A wishing star

People have often wished on stars, through the ages. Gepetto's cat does have a snuggly bed, but alas, there is no dog named Moonbeam.

It is when Geppetto wishes upon the star that the Blue Fairy pays a visit to the workshop. She brings Pinocchio to life, but still as a puppet. She stops short of making him a real boy, until he can earn that great prize.
9. After Pinochhio becomes a living puppet, but not quite a real boy, Geppetto sends him to school On his way, the first day, he meets two "con-men" (a fox and a cat) named Honest John and Gideon, who lead him astray. His first test! But this test leads them into a clever and memorable song. What are the first words of the song they sing?

Answer: "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee, an actor's life for me"

"Zip-a-Dee-Do-Dah" is from the movie "Song of the South", "I've Got a Loverly Bunch of Coconuts" was a hit for a young Merv Griffin, and "Catch a Falling Star" was a hit for the laid-back crooner, Perry Como.

Honest John was a sleazy fox, who leads Pinocchio astray by convincing him that being an actor will be much more fun than going to school. Gideon is his partner, a very goofy ding-bat cat. He has a big mallet with which he likes to hit people on the head.
10. At last Pinocchio proves himself worthy to become a real boy. He passes the Blue Fairy's directions to become brave, truthful and unselfish. He does that by doing what deed?

Answer: By saving Geppetto, Cleo and Figaro from the whale, Monstro.

Pinocchio saves Geppetto, Figaro and Cleo from the whale, then saves Geppetto from drowning, giving up his own life in the process. The Blue Fairy saves Pinocchio and restores his life, this time making him a real boy.

And so, in the end, we see that a former "naughty boy" can become a worthy person by being brave, truthful and unselfish. Hooray for the Blue Fairy!
