Clemens became the first pitcher in history to win 20 or more games in a season without pitching a complete game in 2001. During the season, he passed Walter Johnson for the all-time strikeout leader in the American League.

Milwaukee Brewers. The Milwaukee Brewers finished the 2001 season with 1,399 strikouts and 1,378 hits. Shortstop Jose Hernandez led the team and the league with 185 strikeouts. Richie Sexson finished second in the league with 178 whiffs. Both Hernandez and Sexson are the only players to go 0-for-5 with 5 strikeouts in a game in 2001. The Brewers set a Major League record in 2001 with 1,399 strikouts. The old mark of 1,268 was set by the Detroit Tigers in 1996.

Jason Jennings. On August 23, 2001, Jason Jennings threw a 5 hit shutout at Shea Stadium beating the New York Mets 10-0. He walked 4, struckout 8, and helped himself by going 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 runs-batted-in. Jennings was a late season call-up and finished the 2001 season 4-1 with an 4.58 ERA. He went on to win the Rookie of the Year in 2002.

Carl Everett. On September 2, 2001, New York Yankees' Mike Mussina came within one strike of perfection, but Carl Everett's two-out, two-strike, ninth-inning, pinch-hit single broke-up the Moose's bid for a perfect game. He finished with a one-hitter and struckout 13 as the Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 1-0 at Fenway. David Cone also turned in an excellent performance for Boston, by holding the Yankees scoreless for 8 innings. Cone threw a perfect game against the Expos on July 18,1999.

Despite his trio of blasts, the Cubs still lose to the Astros, 7-6. In 2001, "Slammin Sammy" bacame the first Major League player in history with three career 60-home run seasons.

Scott Hatteberg. On August 6, 2001, Boston Red Sox catcher Scott Hatteberg performs the ultimate baseball opposite in consecutive at bats. With two men on in the 4th inning and the Sox ahead 4-2, he lines into a triple play. Two innings later, after the Rangers score five to go ahead, he hits a grand slam to put Boston in the lead to stay. The Red Sox defeat the Rangers, 10-7. "That's going from the outhouse to the penthouse right there," said Hatteberg after the game.

Christy Mathewson of New York (1913), and Randy Jones of San Diego (1976) previously held the National League record with 68 innings. The American League record was set in 1962 by Bill Fischer of Kansas City with 84-and-one-third innings.

Jeromy Burnitz & Richie Sexson. On September 25, 2001, Burnitz and Sexson each homered three times as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks, 9-4. Twice they hit back-to-back home runs. Burnitz hit his homers in the 2nd, 4th, and 6th innings. He finished the 2001 season with 34 dingers. Sexson hit his homers in the 4th, 6th, and 9th innings. He finished the season with 45 home runs.

Ichiro Suzuki. The previous record was held by "Shoeless" Joe Jackson in 1911. Ichiros' 192 singles in 2001 set a new AL record, once owned by Wade Boggs with 187 singles in 1985.
