Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is a reason why the French state was bankrupt in 1789?

Answer: All of these

The French nobles were the Second Estate and many of them received generous pensions - but paid very little tax.
Marie Antoinette often used the money on personal extravagance. For example, she bathed every day, often in wine. This wine was later rebottled and sold to the Third Estate.
Once France decided to help the Americans, they spent a lot of money supporting the Americans. The war against Britain was very expensive for France.
2. In 1789, a group of people stormed the Bastille. What was the Bastille?

Answer: A prison

The group of people storming the Bastille were expecting to find a lot of prisoners, but as it turned out, there were only seven prisoners. The storming of the Bastille acquired a symbolic significance over and above its immediate political importance.
3. What was the most common way to die a violent or unnatural death during the Reign of Terror?

Answer: decapitation

Approximately 28,000 people died by way of the guillotine during the Reign of Terror, which lasted from 1793-94. Among these were King Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette.
4. What was the name of the leader of the Jacobins?

Answer: Maximilien Robespierre

The Jacobins were formed in 1789. This powerful group was responsible for the Reign of Terror.
5. Where were Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette trying get to when they were identified in Varennes?

Answer: Montmédy

They were caught by someone who recognized Louis's face as that on the French currency. On June 21, 1791, Louis and his wife had fled from Paris, hoping to reach the massive fortress of Montmédy in Lorraine. It was staunchly royalist and had the advantage of being very close to the border with the Austrian Netherlands (modern Belgium) - should they decide to flee France altogether.

After being identified, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were escorted back to Paris. The whole affair was a severe blow to the monarchy.
6. Who took the Tennis Court Oath?

Answer: Third Estate

The Third Estate was upset that the number of votes that could be cast for each estate were the same, even though the Third Estate consisted of about 85% of the people living in France. On June 20, 1789, the Third Estate discovered that the door to the chamber was locked (most likely by accident). They were outraged by this and went to a nearby tennis court and made the oath. All but one member for the Third Estate signed this oath.

The oath was - - "not to separate, and to reassemble wherever circumstances require, until the constitution of the kingdom is established".[
7. What was the purpose of the October Days of 1789?

Answer: to try to get the king to return to Paris

Men, and particularly women, living in Paris marched to Versailles in 1789 and demanded the king's return to Paris. Marquis de Lafayette believed that having the king in Paris would calm the people down. The king agreed to on the condition that his family could also return to Paris.
8. In 1792, Austria attacked France. What is the only group of people who wanted France to win this attack?

Answer: Third Estate

The Third Estate wanted France to defeat the invaders and wanted the revolution to spread to other countries. Elsewhere in Europe there was growing hostility to the French Revolution and many wanted Austria to win so the revolution would not spread.
9. According to the Constitution of the Year VIII (1799), who received all the power of France?

Answer: Napoleon Bonaparte

The French Revolution was considered finished once this constitution was signed. (VIII was part of the name because it was considered the eighth year according to the French Revolution Calendar). This constitution established France's new type of government, which was a 'consulate', ruled over by a three 'consuls', with the First Consul as the supremo. France began to become a more conservative country. Also, the constitution established a Senate, a Tribune, and a Legislative Body but they had very little power.
10. As a result of the French Revolution, the Roman Catholic church began to lose power.

Answer: True

France became an essentially secular state during the Revolution and remained so under Napoleon's rule. In this context secular means separation of church and state; and as a result the church lost power.
