Fun Trivia: A : A Tale of Two Cities

Special Sub-Topic: The French Revolution According to Dickens

Between what years did the book take place?

1775-1793. The book starts out in 1775, the year that Dr. Manette is released from the Bastille, and also the year that he finally meets his daughter, Lucie. In Book the Second, it is five years later (1780), and then it skips later to 1789, and then to 1792 and 1793. It also cites many events happening to the characters in the years 1781.

How old was Charles Darnay at the trial at the beginning of Book the Second, "The Golden Thread"?
    25. This is mentioned briefly as Dickens describes Darnay.

What did Gaspard write on a wall of Saint Antoine with wine?
Blood. He writes this with the wine that spills into the street in front of the Defarges' wine shop.

Who was the messenger for Tellson's Bank?
Jerry Cruncher. He would also dig up graves at night, which was, later on, how he knew that Roger Cly wasn't dead.

What was the real name of Miss Pross' brother?
Solomon. He was a spy in England and France, and he lived under the name John Barsad. He apparently stole money from Miss Pross, but she still loved him and thought that he was the only man who deserved Lucie.

What relation was Darnay to the "elder brother"?
son. His uncle became marquis after Darnay's father died, and Darnay denounced the title because it had been his mother's dying wish.

What was Darnay's real name?
Evremonde & Charles Evremonde. His father and uncle were the ones who sent Dr. Manette to jail for 18 years. That is why, on the morning of Darnay and Lucie's wedding, Dr. Manette looked so shocked, and then regressed back to the way he was in the Bastille.

How many people were executed on the day Darnay was to be executed?
    52. This, apparently, displeased Madame Defarge. Darnay, fortunately, was not among the 52, and Madame Defarge did not live to see any of the executions.

How many children did Darnay and Lucie have?
three. They had a son whose name we never learn and who died; Little Lucie; and it is mentioned at the very end that they also have another son, whom they name after Sydney Carton.

Who was guillotined at the end of the book?
Sydney Carton. Hopefully everyone got at least that much right. Carton died because he promised Lucie that he would do anything for her or anyone she loved, so he died in Darnay's place.
