Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Marriage and the family: I have a sister and a brother who live at home with me and my parents, who have been married for sixteen years. What kind of family is this?

Answer: nuclear family

In Britain in 1971 68% of households were headed by a married couple. In 2001 this figure had dropped to 45%.
2. Poverty: Absolute poverty is the lack of basic needs such as food and water. So what is relative poverty?

Answer: A lack of 'luxury' items that are common to that society.

The north/south divide is the unequal distribution of wealth across the world. Generally, countries in the northern hemisphere are richer, whereas countries in the southern hemisphere suffer more absolute poverty.
3. Prejudice and discrimination: A man won't let his wife get a job because he believes women should stay at home to do house work and look after the children. Is his action prejudice or discrimination?

Answer: discrimination

Prejudice is having a biased feeling or attitude about someone based on gender, race, disabilities or colour. Discrimination is putting this prejudice into action and acting differently toward someone.
4. Crime and punishment: Which of these is not one of the five main aims of punishment?

Answer: murder

Seven main reasons have been proposed for why people commit crimes:
-The thrill of being chased and caught excites them.
-They live in poverty and feel they have to commit crimes to survive.
-They are bored.
-They need to feed their addictions.
-They want to be wealthier.
-It was a crime of passion or jealousy (a husband finding his wife in bed with another man, for example).
-They have a lack of moral values.

Five main goals of punishment are retribution or revenge, deterring future crimes, reforming the criminal, protecting the community, and vindicating the law.
5. War and Terrorism: What is the name given to someone who believes all forms of violence and war are wrong?

Answer: pacifist

The thirteenth-century scholar Thomas Aquinas came up with the original Just War Theory, which attempts to justify and limit war. Some of the modern points are that war should be a last resort, the war should be started by a democratic leader, and it must promote good over evil.
6. Crime and punishment: At the turn of the 21st century which of these countries still used capital punishment (the death penalty)?

Answer: Saudi Arabia

Some American states also used the death penalty as a form of punishment. Several of those same states also had the highest murder rate in the world at that time, suggesting that capital punishment doesn't deter some people from committing crimes.
7. War and Terrorism: Here is a definition; what is the word that corresponds to it? The systematic use of violence and threats to create terror, especially as a means of coercion.

Answer: terrorism

People use terrorism to achieve a number of goals. Religious extremism and ethnic or political conflict provide some examples.
8. Marriage and the family: What does fidelity mean?

Answer: only having sex with your partner

Chastity is usually used to mean not having sex at all, although the phrase conjugal chastity is equivalent to fidelity. Fidelity is only having sex with your partner at any given time.
9. Prejudice and discrimination: Which official South African policy did Nelson Mandela fight against, using what some people consider to be terrorism?

Answer: apartheid

Mandela belonged to the ANC, which stands for the African National Congress. They fought for the freedom of black people in South Africa, who were oppressed by the apartheid system in effect from 1948 to 1994.
10. Poverty: What is unconditional love?

Answer: loving someone with no conditions or limits

Christianity teaches unconditional love, so many Christians feel that they should help and care for people in poverty.
