Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What color is the Phantom Tollbooth that the main character, Milo, assembles in his bedroom?

Answer: Purple

Milo comes home to discover the tollbooth in an extremely large package. A note is included, stating that "this package contains one (1) genuine turnpike tollbooth to be erected according to the directions", among other things. These included three precautionary signs saying "SLOW DOWN APPROACHING TOLLBOOTH", "PLEASE HAVE YOUR FARE READY", and "HAVE YOUR DESTINATION IN MIND", several coins to be used for paying tolls, and a map.
2. Milo passes through the tollbooth and finds himself where?

Answer: Expectations

In Expectations, Milo meets the Whether Man, an odd little man who tends to repeat everything he says. Milo goes to Conclusions, The Mountains of Ignorance, and The Doldrums later in the book.
3. Milo, not thinking, ends up in The Doldrums, where he encounters the party of Lethargarians. They tell him that he is breaking Local Ordinance 175389-J. What is Local Ordinance 175389-J?

Answer: It shall be unlawful, illegal, and unethical to think

Although laughing is illegal, it is not Local Ordinance 175389-J. The other two choices I just made up.
4. Milo finds Tock while in the Doldrums, a watchdog that makes what sound?

Answer: Tick-tick-tick-tick

Tock is the youngest watchdog in his family. His body is a massive watch, with the limbs, tail, and head of a dog. His parents named his brother Tick, anticipating that that was the sound he would make, but instead he went tock-tock-tock. Determined not to make the mistake again, they named their next offspring Tock, assuming that he would make the same sound as his brother. Of course, that didn't work out so well.
5. In Dictionopolis, Milo meets a number of characters including The Spelling Bee, The Humbug, and King Azaz's Cabinet. Who is not one of the members of his cabinet?

Answer: The Secretary of Spelling

The other two members of the King's cabinet are the Count of Connotation and the Minister of Meaning. They tend to each say something different that means the same thing. For example: Duke: "Nonsense!" Minister: "Ridiculous!" Earl: "Fantastic!" Count: "Absurd!" Undersecretary: "Bosh!"
6. Milo, the Humbug, and the Spelling Bee cause some trouble in the marketplace, and Milo is blamed for it. Officer Shrift, the Chief of Police, Judge, and Jailer of Dictionopolis, places Milo under arrest for how many million years?

Answer: six

Milo is placed in a cell with Faintly Macabre, the not-so-wicked Which, a kindly old lady who is King Azaz's great aunt. Milo "escapes", if you can call pressing a button and walking out of the prison escaping, and is invited to a banquet with the king.
7. Milo, Tock, and the Humbug embark on a quest to rescue Rhyme and Reason. but to do so, they need the Mathemagician's permission. On the way to his kingdom of Digitopolis, they meet Alec Bings. What is unusual about his family?

Answer: They are born suspended in the air, and their feet grow downward

Another thing about the family is that they all 'see' something different: Alec sees through things, his dad sees to things, his mother looks after things, his brother sees beyond things, his uncle sees the other side of every question, and his little sister Alice sees under things.
8. Milo and company become lost on the journey and are advised to see the giant. He tells them to see the midget, who tells them to see the fat man, who tells them to see the thin man. What is special about these people?

Answer: These statements are all true

As it happens, he is really a perfectly ordinary, run-of-the-mill man. But to tall men, he's a midget, to short men he's a giant, to the skinny men he's a fat man, and to the fat men he's a skinny man.
9. Milo and his companions eventually arrive at the twin cities of Reality and Illusions. What is odd about Reality?

Answer: It's completely invisible

Because nobody cared about the city, it has started to fade away, and everyone is too busy to notice it. Everyone has just been too busy to notice the city disappearing.
10. Milo and his friends leave Reality and encounter the Color Symphony, a constantly playing orchestra that provides color to the world. What is the name of the conductor?

Answer: Chroma

Milo gets curious while Chroma is sleeping and decides to try and conduct the orchestra. Eventually, all the colors are mixed up and seven days have passed! I hope you have enjoyed my quiz!
