Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From 1964 to 1973, UCLA won the championship every year except 1966. Who won it that year?

Answer: Texas Western

Texas Western (now the University of Texas at El Paso, or UTEP) won a landmark game in which their 5 African-American starters defeated Kentucky's all white lineup in the NCAA final.
2. What Bruin scored 42 points in the 1965 NCAA final against top ranked Michigan to lead UCLA to a 91-80 victory?

Answer: Gail Goodrich

Goodrich's 42 points were a championship game record that stood until Bill Walton scored 44 points in the 1973 final.
3. This captain of the 1964 and 1965 Bruins later coached the team. Who was it?

Answer: Walt Hazzard

Erickson never coached the Bruins. Farmer was on the Bruins championship teams in the early '70s, and Cunningham played on the team in the early '60s.
4. A new era dawned at UCLA in 1967 with the arrival of Lew Alcindor (later Kareem Abdul-Jabbar). He dominated college basketball like nobody before him and the Bruins won 3 more titles. How many games did they lose during Alcindor's 3 years at UCLA?

Answer: 2

The Bruins lost to Houston in 1968 by a score of 71-69, and to USC in 1969 by a score of 46-44. The Houston game is credited with bringing college basketball into the national spotlight as this battle between the #1 and #2 teams was nationally televised, and over 52,000 attended at the Astrodome. UCLA avenged this loss by defeating Houston 101-69 in the national semifinals.
5. After Lew Alcindor graduated, many thought UCLA was vulnerable and would not win their fourth straight title in 1970. They came from behind to beat which first-time finalist in the championship game?

Answer: Jacksonville

Jacksonville was led by future ABA and NBA star Artis Gilmore. Despite a 6 inch height disadvantage, Sidney Wicks, UCLA's star forward, blocked a number of Gilmore's shots, and out-rebounded him 18-16.
6. The 1971 UCLA Bruins showed signs of vulnerability as they has lost to Notre Dame during the season and escaped with several other narrow victories. In addition to their national dominance, their Pac-8 dominance was threatened by the #2 ranked team in the country. Who?

Answer: USC

USC had their best basketball team ever (featuring Ron Riley, Paul Westphal, and Mo Layton) and lost only 2 games all year - both to UCLA. Many of the Bruins and Trojans had grown up playing against each other in Jr. High, High School, and on the playgrounds of L.A., so the Trojans were not intimidated by the UCLA "mystique." Unfortunately for USC, only one team per conference qualified for the NCAA tournament until 1976, so the #2 team in the country stayed home.
7. UCLA's struggles continued in the postseason and they nearly lost to this team in the West Regional finals.

Answer: Long Beach State

Long Beach State, coached by Jerry Tarkanian and led by star player Ed Ratleff (who later played in the NBA), led the Bruins by 11 points in the second half, but eventually fell 57-55. Some say the 3 best teams in the country in 1971 were all in Los Angeles county (UCLA, USC, Long Beach State).
8. The 1972 season saw another big man come to UCLA to continue the dynasty. The Bill Walton led Bruins didn't disappoint, going undefeated on their way to the NCAA championship game. Once there however, they got a scare from this team that lost by the smallest margin of any UCLA championship game opponent in the John Wooden era.

Answer: Florida State

The Seminoles came from way behind and lost 81-76 in the final. Drake gave the Alcindor era Bruins their closest tournament game, losing in the national semifinals by three in 1969, and Villanova got within three points late in the 1971 final that they eventually lost, 66-60.
9. UCLA defeated Notre Dame to break the previous record of 60 consecutive victories by a NCAA Division 1 men's basketball team. What school's record did they break?

Answer: University of San Francisco

USF set the record in the mid-1950s when they won back to back NCAA titles, led by Bill Russell and K.C. Jones.
10. In the 1973 final vs. Memphis State, how many shots did Bill Walton miss?

Answer: 1

Walton was an amazing 21 of 22 from the field and 2 for 2 from the free throw line for a finals record 44 points in UCLA's 87-66 win. He also added 13 rebounds.
11. Notre Dame is noted for ending the Bruins' amazing 88 game winning streak in 1974. But later that season, UCLA lost back to back games for the first time since 1966. Who were the opponents?

Answer: Oregon State and Oregon

UCLA lost in Corvallis and Eugene, Oregon and for the first time, national publications broke out with "Bruins in Ruins" headlines. These losses dropped UCLA into a tie for the Pac-8 lead with USC, whom they soundly defeated in the last game of the regular season to win the conference and qualify for the NCAA tournament.
12. What team finally ended UCLA's streak of 7 consecutive NCAA titles by beating them in the 1974 national semifinals?

Answer: North Carolina State

Like they had against Notre Dame when their 88 game win streak ended, UCLA lost their poise and blew a late lead, this time a 7- point margin in the second overtime.
13. Like the 1970 team, the 1975 Bruins went into the season without a dominating center as Bill Walton had graduated. Yet after a few losses and some close calls, there they were, in the final four again. What team did they beat by one point in overtime in a memorable national semi-final?

Answer: Louisville

UCLA rallied to send the game into overtime on a two free throws by Richard Washington, and a steal and layup by Marques Johnson. Trailing by one in overtime, the Bruins fouled Louisville's Terry Howard, who hadn't missed a free throw all season. He missed the front end of the one plus one, and Richard Washington hit a turnaround jumper with 2 seconds left for a 75-74 win. Ironically, Louisville was coached by former UCLA assistant Denny Crum.

After the game, John Wooden announced he would retire after the championship game.
14. Whom did UCLA defeat in the 1975 championship game, sending John Wooden off with his 10th championship?

Answer: Kentucky

UCLA defeated favored Kentucky 92-85 to send coach Wooden out a winner.
15. Which of the following schools did not lose to UCLA in any of the 10 championship games the Bruins won between 1964 and 1975.

Answer: Georgetown

Georgetown never made it as they did not reach national prominence until the 1980s. Dayton fell to the Bruins in 1967, Purdue lost to them in the 1969 final, and Villanova was the victim in 1971.
