Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos figured heavily in Greek mythology. By what collective name were these three women known?

Answer: Fates

The Fates, or Moirae, controlled the thread of life from birth to death. Clotho spun the thread, Lachesis measured it thus deciding how long you would live, and Atropos decided upon your manner of death and cut the thread to end your life.
2. These daughters of St. Sophia were said to be virgin martyrs who happened to share their names with three Christian virtues. Do you know them?

Answer: Faith, Hope, and Charity

Not much is known about this group of saints other than that they were martyred during the reign of Hadrian. Their bodies were buried on the Aurelian Way.
3. For which chemical reaction are oxygen, heat, and fuel the three necessary ingredients?

Answer: Combustion

Yep, good old fire, or combustion, is actually a series of chemical reactions that cannot occur unless the three key ingredients are present. Fortunately for us, nuclear fusion is not quite so simple to orchestrate. A sliced apple that turns brown or a rusty pipe is the result of oxidation. Effervescence is the result of gas escaping from a watery solution.
4. Which explorer comes to mind if I tell you his ships were the "Nina", the "Pinta", and the "Santa Maria"?

Answer: Cristoforo Colombo

The king and queen of Spain furnished Colombo (Columbus) with his ships in 1492 and the rest, as they say, is history. Did you know that the "Nina" and the "Pinta" are nicknames? The actual name of the "Nina" was the "Santa Clara". The "Pinta" means "painted one"; the actual name of the ship has been lost through the ages.
5. Which of Shakespeare's tragedies feature the prophetesses known as the Weird, or Wayward, Sisters or the Three Witches?

Answer: Butcher, baker, candlestick maker

There are several variations on the theme of this rhyme. One even features three maids in a tub. With the men? Instead of the men? Before or after the men? Who knows?
7. The three main agricultural crops of squash, corn, and beans were, and still are, the main staple of Native American farming. By what collective name are these crops known?

Answer: Three Sisters

The "Three Sisters" are planted close together because they are beneficial to each other, drawing or dispersing nutrients one to the other. They are so important to the Natives' way of life that a representation of the crops are present on the Sacagawea dollar coin.
8. United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing starts with the Kentucky Derby, continues with the Preakness, and ends with which race?

9. Hecate, the Greek goddess of magic, plant lore, childbirth, and entrances (gates, doorways, etc.) is portrayed as a triple goddess or, sometimes, a goddess with three heads, some of which may be in animal form. As usually happens, she has a Roman counterpart whose name is drawn from her triplicate form. Do you know her?

Answer: Trivia

In her Roman incarnation, she wanders about at night, haunts graveyards, and can only be seen by dogs who then bark to warn of her approach.
10. I'm sure you're familiar with Mizaru, Kikazaru, and Iwazaru; however, you may be more familiar with their collective name. By what name are they commonly known?

Answer: Three wise monkeys

"See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". Although probably centuries old, the three wise monkeys became popular as a result of a 17th century carving on a door in a Japanese shrine. Three wise men: Balthazar, Caspar, and Melchior. The Hindu trinity: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The Brothers Karamazov: Fyodor, Dmitri, and Ivan.
