Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (or UNC Charlotte) was officially opened on September 23, 1946. What was the school's original name?

Answer: Charlotte College

Charlotte College was originally a two-year school which grew out of the Charlotte Center extension of the University of North Carolina. Thanks to the efforts of educator Bonnie Cone, who convinced the state of the need for a major school in the area, the school survived near closures on several occasions and managed to become part of the state's community college system in the 1950s. Cone served as president of the fledgling school for many years, and as acting chancellor once it became part of the University of North Carolina system.
2. South Carolina native Bonnie Cone, considered to be the founder of UNC Charlotte, taught what subject predominantly during the school's formative days?

Answer: Mathematics

Cone's devotion to the school forced her to give up teaching so that she could manage the day-to-day aspects of managing the school's affairs. That included lining up teachers and securing donations from various benefactors. Prior to her teaching work at the Charlotte Center and later Charlotte College, Cone taught at Duke University in Durham and at Central High in Charlotte.

After her death in March, 2003, Cone was laid to rest on the UNC Charlotte campus, near Fretwell Hall.
3. Dr. Dean W. Colvard, who became the first full-time chancellor in UNC Charlotte's history in 1966, served as president of which Southern U.S. school immediately before coming home to North Carolina?

Answer: Mississippi State University

A North Carolina native who received his doctorate in science and mathematics at Purdue and served as Dean of Agriculture at North Carolina State University, Dean W. Colvard made history when he allowed Mississippi State's mens basketball team to accept the SEC's automatic bid in the NCAA tournament in 1963.

At the time, there was an unwritten rule that Mississippi state schools would not compete against schools featuring racially-integrated teams. Thanks to Colvard's decision to accept the bid, head coach Babe McCarthy managed to sneak his team out of the state to play Loyola Chicago in the first round of the tournament. Colvard served as UNC Charlotte's chancellor from 1966 until 1978.
4. UNC Charlotte made history in 1977, when it advanced to its first ever Men's Final Four. Which team did UNC Charlotte defeat in the Mideast Region final that year to get to the Final Four?

Answer: Michigan

Led by Cedric "Cornbread" Maxwell, UNC Charlotte defeated Central Michigan and Syracuse in the first two rounds before defeating Michigan to win the regional title. Maxwell, who went on to have a fine NBA career, led all scorers in the tournament, which only featured 32 teams, with 123 points. UNC Charlotte would end up losing to Marquette in their National Semifinal matchup, and fell to UNLV in the Consolation Game.
5. What are the official colors of UNC Charlotte?

Answer: Green and white

Not only are green and white the official university colors, but the official shade of green, based on the Pantone Matching System, is PMS 349. Gold and black have typically been used as accent colors on athletic uniforms and marketing collateral.
6. UNC Charlotte's mascot is named Norm the Niner. What profession does Norm represent?

Answer: Mining

Norm the Niner is a nod to Reed Gold Mine in nearby Concord, the site of the first documented gold find in the United States in 1799. He also honors the Charlotte branch of the United States Mint, which opened in 1838 and minted gold coins for nearly a century.
7. December 2, 1996, marked another milestone for UNC Charlotte, when the campus-based Dale F. Halton Arena hosted its first men's basketball game. Prior to that date, the men played their home games at which venue(s)?

Answer: They played at all of these venues

Belk Gymnasium was the first permanent basketball venue used by the 49ers, from 1970 to 1976. After joining the Sun Belt Conference for the 1976-77 season, the team moved their home games to Bojangle's Coliseum (at that time known as the Charlotte Coliseum) on East Independence Boulevard and played there until 1987-88.

In 1988-89, they moved to the second Charlotte Coliseum off Tyvola Road and played there through 1992-93, when they moved back to Bojangle's Coliseum (at that time known as Independence Arena). Halton Arena, named after a former Pepsi bottling executive, is located inside the James H. Barnhardt Student Activity Center.
8. Among the notable people who have taught at UNC Charlotte is Dr. Kathy Reichs, whose novels inspired the TV series "Bones". What subject did Reichs teach at UNC Charlotte?

Answer: Anthropology

Earning a doctorate in Physical Anthropology from Northwestern in 1975, Reichs taught at Northern Illinois and Davidson before becoming a lecturer at UNC Charlotte. "Deja Dead", the first novel in a series focused on anthropologist Temperance Brennan, was published in 1997 and won the Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel. She also serves as a producer on "Bones".
9. Among the notable alumni from UNC Charlotte is heavyweight boxer Calvin Brock. Brock's nickname is "The Boxing _________________"

Answer: Banker

Brock received a degree in Finance from UNC Charlotte in 1999, and has had success in the ring and outside of it. He got his nickname because at one time he worked at Bank of America in Charlotte. His success as a boxer earned him a spot as a playable character in the EA Sports video game "Fight Night Round 3".
10. Until 2005, UNC Charlotte did not have an official residence for the chancellor.

Answer: True

UNC Charlotte's fourth chancellor, Philip Dubois, who succeeded James Woodward in July, 2005, was the first chancellor to occupy Bissell House, which is located on the southern edge of the main campus. Prior to the opening of Bissell House, UNC Charlotte's chancellors lived in housing off campus. Immediately before becoming chancellor, Dubois served as president of the University of Wyoming from 1997 to 2005 and as UNC Charlotte's provost and professor of political science from 1991 to 1997.
