Clark takes Lana to the hidden room in the cave, and warns her that something highly unusual and scary would be about to occur, but then Clark asks if Lana trusts him, and she does. They arrive in the Yukon and the "real" Fortress of Solitude Jor-El left for Clark as a replica of his home planet's terrain. Lana realizes that Clark has saved her life a million times and never taken credit for it, but Clark's only response is that he could never let anything happen to her.

When Clark crushes coal into a diamond and melts it (with his heat-vision) to a gold band to propose, he doesn't ask for an answer right away.

But still- what a date!

The second time around, Lana never found out about Clark. Lana isn't there to catch Lois, and Lois, water still running, falls from the stool. Clark finds her in a puddle of water unconscious and rescues her.

Lana tells Lex that there just wasn't time to tell anyone about "it", (notice that the actual word "engagement" never leaves her lips), because "it all happened so fast". Lex then makes a very true statement- she'd never say "yes" with all the doubts she had.

Although Lana says nothing about Clark and his secret other than "He isn't hiding anything", Lex realizes that Clark must have revealed himself to her. How else could she have ever said "yes"? Another answer choice of mine mentioned Lex kissing Lana, and Lana backing away.

This only happens when the day occurs a second time (after Clark has turned back time)- not the first time around.

Answer: Lana realizes that Lex is following her, and she tells Clark she's scared. Clark asks where she is, Lex begs Lana to talk, and Lana is hit by a bus...

Lana is hit by a bus just as Lex is screaming "Watch out!" Clark speeds over as soon as Lana's voice isn't on the other end of their cell phone conversation, but by then it's too late. He speeds over to see Lana's car totaled, and doesn't happen to car about secrecy after that moment. Lex sees Clark appear, and obviously realizes what he's seen, but the next moment is focused on Clark seeing Lana's dead body.

The school bus driver has stopped after seeing what he's done, and Clark is horrified by what he's let happen. Jonathan, who was driving by the scene of the accident on his way to meet Lionel, skids off the side of the road and runs over to Clark.

In a meaningful embrace, Jonathan tells Clark that there was nothing Clark could have done...

Clark knows that someone, and not just anyone, but someone whom he loves, must die in exchange for his life. However, Clark doesn't think through his decision to use the crystal- he simply says to himself, "I have to save Lana," and takes the crystal without second thought.

However, if Clark hadn't done whatever he could to prevent Lana's death again, she, Lois, and his father would have died. Talk about devastation and feeling guilty for their deaths!

Interesting time choice, Jor-El. Did Lana really have to not know about Clark? Back to Lana. After saying this ("I think I need a break"), she starts to walk away. Clark just stares after her, unable to think of what to do or say. After a few moments, he asks, "A break from me?" "No," Lana replies. "A break from us." When told that he still could have told Lana his secret, Clark explains his reasoning for now feeling that he can never tell her. Lana knew who he truly was for less than a day, and she died! As long as Clark's alive, he reasons, someone will always be trying to figure out his secret.

However, Clark could have told Lana his secret, as viewers get to see within a few minutes. Lex and Lana still fight, Lana still tries to get away, Lex still follows, and Lana still is "supposed to" be hit by a bus, but this time Clark is there to stop it.

Interesting way for the writers to prove to the viewers that they'll never get the satisfaction of Lana finding out what Clark's hiding...

Lana doesn't pull away immediately, but she doesn't like the fact that he kissed her as soon as she's realized what's happened. Lex apologizes, but Lana says, "It's okay." She then says, "I'm just gonna leave now," and leaves Lex's study. Then Lex throws his glass into the fire in frustration, just as he did when Lana didn't reveal Clark's secret to him. Interesting...

After Jonathan smiles to express his love for his wife and "adopted" son, Jonathan becomes limp and unconscious. Martha screams into the night, wishing with all her might for Jonathan to not be dead, not now. Lionel is still in the barn, most likely forgotten. Viewers do see Lionel's hand pick up the crumpled piece of paper, though, which seems significant to future plot lines.

Clark helps his mother put on the same pearl necklace that Jonathan put on for her at Jonathan's own election party. This time, Martha is dressing for Jonathan's funeral. When this episode aired for the first time, the "major character" that would die in this 100th episode of "Smallville" was an extreme mystery- no one knew.

The most likely candidates were Chloe or Jonathan, though, followed by Lana. Chloe isn't a character in the "real" Superman universe, so it would make sense if she left. Jonathan already had a heart condition, and Clark doesn't really need his father anymore (besides the fact that Jonathan does actually die in other versions of Superman), so Jonathan dying wouldn't be a shock. Lastly, Lana would be the most devastating to Clark- the ideal candidate for Jor-El to punish Clark with.
