Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This musician, born in Fulton, Maryland, got his first big break playing with Martin Mull and His Fabulous Furniture. He found fame as a founding member of a popular Boston-based band. Who is this keyboard player whose first solo record "Niagara Falls" was released in 1982 and his second, "The Beatles Uke", in 2008?

Answer: Greg Hawkes

Greg Hawkes, who also plays guitar, woodwinds, and ukelele, is best known as the keyboard player for The Cars. Both of his solo records were instrumental-- "Niagara Falls" had a sound not unlike The Cars with its' layered synthesizers, while in contrast, "The Beatles Uke" featured classic Beatles songs rendered solely on ukeleles of various sizes.
2. The organ played in a jazz setting is unusual, but not unheard of. Which African-American lady from Philadelphia was known for playing the Hammond organ releasing records such as "Satin Doll", "Happy Talk" and "Queen Of The Organ"?

Answer: Shirley Scott

Born in 1934, Scott played with saxophonist Eddie Davis in the '50s and saxophonist Stanley Turrentine in the '60s before leading her own groups, which was usually in a trio setting.
3. Which singer/pianist had formerly played with The Hassles and Attila by the time of his first solo release "Cold Spring Harbor" in 1971?

Answer: Billy Joel

A native New Yorker, Joel was born in The Bronx and raised out on Long island in Hicksville.
4. Which British keyboardist initially found fame as a member of Heatwave before becoming a much sought-after songwriter?

Answer: Rod Temperton

Rod Temperton was the songwriting mastermind behind Heatwave before leaving the group to concentrate solely on songwriting. He was most noted for composing "Rock With You", "Off The Wall", and "Thriller" for Michael Jackson, among others.
5. Who of the following has NOT been a keyboard player that recorded with Yes?

Answer: Eddie Jobson

Also a brilliant electric violinist, Jobson was hired after the temporary sacking of original keyboard player Tony Kaye. Eddie Jobson was only with the band long enough to appear in the video for "Owner of a Lonely Heart" in 1983. At the time, Yes had just reformed after a three hiatus with South African born guitarist/vocalist Trevor Rabin. To validate that this was Yes, record company executives talked the band into bringing back Tony Kaye.

The idea of playing with another keyboard player didn't sit well with Jobson and he split.
6. Does Phil Collins do all the piano and keyboard work on his releases?

Answer: No

In the beginning, on every recording, he typically played almost all the piano and keyboards, two exceptions being 1993's "Both Sides' which saw him playing all instruments by himself and 2010's "Going Back" in which he relinquished the keyboard playing to Brad Cole and Jason Rebello, focusing only on vocals and drums.
7. Which keyboardist and guitarist joined the former members of Joy Division when they became New Order?

Answer: Gillian Gilbert

Gillian Gilbert was already known by the members of New Order, having played with them as a touring member in their former incarnation as Joy Division.
8. Which keyboard player has played with the likes of Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, and Eric Burdon, and was a member of Spock's Beard beginning in 1996?

Answer: Ryo Okumoto

Ryo Okumoto was born in Osaka, Japan.
9. Is Dizzy Reed is an original member of Guns 'n' Roses?

Answer: No

The keyboard player joined the volatile band in 1990 at the request of vocalist Axl Rose in time to play on their recordings "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II" which were released in 1991. He's been with them longer than anyone else besides Rose.
10. Which of the following keyboardists recorded and performed with Yes, The Moody Blues and Refugee?

Answer: Patrick Moraz

Swiss-born Patrick Moraz recorded one LP each with Refugee and Yes, both released in 1974. He joined The Moody Blues in 1978 in time for their Octave Tour, staying with them as a recording and touring member until 1992.
