Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A kangaroo is a mammal from the _______ family.

Answer: Marsupial

Marsupials are mammals. The female has a pouch called a marsupium, from which the word "marsupial" originates.
A monotreme is a mammal (such as an Echidna) that lays eggs instead of giving birth to a living baby. A baby monotreme is called a puggle.
A Quokka is a small marsupial animal, about the size of a large cat. Quokkas are nocturnal (they are active at night).
2. What are the groups that kangaroos live in called?

Answer: Mobs

Sheep live in flocks, fish swim in schools and most kangaroos live in mobs. Other kangaroos live in small family groups or alone.
3. What are female kangaroos called?

Answer: Does

Male kangaroos are called bucks, or "boomers" or an "old man". Females are called does, or sometimes "flyers". Joeys are baby kangaroos. Mares are female horses.
4. Most kangaroos are what kind of animal?

Answer: Herbivores

They are herbivores because they don't eat meat - they eat plants, grass and shoots. Carnivores are animals that eat only meat, and omnivores are animals that eat both meat and plants. Most marsupials are herbivores and nocturnal.
5. Which type of kangaroo is seen most in the open?

Answer: Eastern Grey

The Red kangaroo is known better by reputation, yet the Eastern Grey is most commonly seen in the open. There are no Purple kangaroos (that I know of!). There are least 60 known species of kangaroo.
6. Which country is the kangaroo famous for; it is on the coat of arms of this country?

Answer: Australia

Kangaroos are on the Australian coat of arms and even on coins. Kangaroos live mostly in Australia, too. They also live in New Guinea.
7. Kangaroos are the only large mammals besides humans that can do what?

Answer: Hop

Kangaroos can hop, some can swim, kick-box (this is how they fight), tree kangaroos can climb and they can climb and jump on rocks. Some kangaroos can jump up to 40 feet. Kangaroos are not the only mammals that can swim.
8. What is a baby kangaroo called?

Answer: Joey

A filly is a baby female horse and a kid is a baby goat. A joey is a baby kangaroo that lives in its mother's pouch until it is old enough come out.
9. Kangaroos have few predators, and most are extinct. The Thylacine, the Megalania and the Wonambi are extinct predators, but what is the other extinct one?

Answer: Marsupial Lion

Marsupial lions were the largest mammalian predators in Australia then, and they were the weight of a small lion. They didn't look like lions, though; they had a small thin head with sharp teeth.
10. Where do kangaroos often live?

Answer: Rocky places

Kangaroos can live by the sea, in rocky places, grasslands, and the outback or in forests. Baby kangaroos live in their mother's pouch until they are about 9 months old.
