Gilly, the wall spackling trick goes back forty years, for me, at least, when I was a young airman living with my family in base housing. Although we were allowed to hang pictures on the walls while we lived in base housing, we were not allowed to have nail holes in the walls when we left. We were charged for spackling and repainting (if necessary). Since all walls in all base housing units were painted white, a dollop of Colgate toothpaste filled the holes nicely and blended well with the existing paint job.
Once the housing inspector signed off the inspection sheet, we were home free (so to speak).
Some days it just doesn't seem worth trying to chew through the restraints.
