World Cricket - 2013: November 21, 2013 to end March, 2014

Inviting people for the 10th edition of World Cricket...

Nobody has ever retained their title in the 9 editions this comp has been run....paper_aero is the defending champion here after a very dominating performance last season. N-Bomb was second last year after winning it the year before. Can paper_aero do what 8 others failed to do before him?

Plenty of cricket action over the next few months, starting with the Ashes down under. Other than Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, we will see all other Test teams in play here in our comp over the next 4 months!

You will as usual pick 5 players for Test matches and 6 for ODI series from the list of players I will provide and you score as many points as the runs/wickets by your selected player. A carefully chosen Trump player can double your points and boost your scores considerably. If you are not a regular visitor to the forums here, you can still lodge a team at the beginning of a series and allow it to score for you till a new series comes about.

Most threads won't be up till a few days before a match/series and the comp will also involve some unannounced series and some mega bonus rounds in between (where 2 matches start on same/close by dates).

13 people turned up last year, so hoping to see a decent turn-around this year too and to a good, fun competition...

  • A Hearty welcome to the 8 people who lined up on the starting blocks for the 10th edition of World Cricket! No new faces this year and even of the 'regulars' who are usually there, LeoDaVinci, illiniman14 and N-Bomb are missing (though N-Bombs did post tips for round 2)

  • Australia thrashed the daylights out of England with one of the heaviest Ashes defeats to kick start our season with a bang! Was this the same England side that were so dominant against the very same opponents just 3 months back? confused

  • wwe84 and ozzz2002 are off the blocks in some style in our comp, picking 'near-perfect' teams. wwe84 edges the first HoF by a single point, a real rarity in this comp in terms of margins! gtho4 is not too far behind with a decent showing as well.

  • Two of our podium finishers last year, paper_aero and srini701 are apparently still groggy from their last year's celebrations, while the 3rd podium finisher N-Bomb did not even get up for round 1 grin crazy

  • Some stats from me to make note of: Spoonless streaks still running include paper_aero, Sypher and N-Bomb (exact number to be confirmed by next round)...with N-Bomb not lodging tips for this round, can his name still be considered?? frown

  • There will be plenty of rounds this season with 2 Test matches in them, so we will be picking 10 players each time such rounds happen. Please play close attention each round as to how many players you have to pick, that's all!

  • South Africa shared the T20 series 1-1 and managed to lose an ODI series they should have won with ease against Pakistan. They await India next for a 3 ODIs and 2 Test series (we will cover the Tests in our comp here).

  • wwe84 extends his lead at the top of the ladder but paper_aero has begun to make his move. He takes this round's HoF award and climbs up a couple of rungs.

  • Howie takes the spoon by a narrow margin against BxBarracuda.

  • With plenty of rounds with 2 Test matches on this season, even a lead of 300 points may not be a comfortable cushion out here for some time to come smile

  • New Zealand were robbed off a win by rain on the final day at Dunedin and Brendon McCullum's quest for a Test win as a captain continues...this is not to take away from the brilliant performance of Darren Bravo, who scored a double hundred after West Indies were asked to follow-on...another interesting stat: New Zealand have NEVER won a Test match in their history after scoring 600!

  • Rain did not save England though, and Australia duly pounded them in the 2nd Test at Adelaide to go 2-0 up. Mitchell Johnson continues to torment them with the ball, Michael Clarke continues to plunder hundreds off them and now their captain can't score a run frown

  • ozzz2002 leaps past wwe84 to the top of the standings here but the round totally belonged to N-Bomb. He picked the round's HoF with a massive score despite not picking the best possible trumps, and he jumps into 4th place now....

  • At the other end, srini completed a most miserable round with a second spoon in 3 rounds...one of his "trumps" did not even play the match frown while the rest only had an average outing.

The next round (again involving the same teams) starts Wednesday, New Zealand time. If you do not pick teams, the same teams that scored this round can continue to score for you...

If it wasn't for Alistair Cook, I would have picked a near perfect squad (bar the trumps). Safe to say that won't happen again!

  • Australia regained the Ashes well before Christmas! They thumped the hapless English by 150 runs in Perth with Mitchell Johnson and David Warner continuing to make this their Ashes smile But England probably has a silver lining in the form of Ben Stokes, who has shown he has it in him to be a good all-rounder in the years to come.

  • New Zealand won their first Test for 2013 with an innings win over West Indies inside three days. This is the 3rd Test in the last 4 they played that West Indies are losing in less than 3 days! Ross Taylor scored a second successive Test century while Trent Boult picked a 10 wicket haul to speed up the defeat.

  • paper_aero picked up a second HoF and continued his climb up the ladder. N-Bomb also moved up with another good round.

  • wwe84 is back on top as Ozzz2002 picks up his first spoon and tumbles all the way from the top, down to seventh place.

The next round sees a new series start as India take on South Africa. That Test starts on Wednesday, Dec 18, so make sure you get your tips in before the toss.

    spoonless streaks running:
    N-Bomb - 41 and counting: 3 (2013-14)+ 18 (2012-13)+ 17 (2011) +3 (last spoon in round 24 of 2010-11)

    paper_aero - 22 and counting: 4 (2013-14) + 18 (2012-13) (spoon in last round of 2011 comp)

Quite agree with that...I honestly thought it would be a good, close Ashes with Australia just having the edge because of home conditions! Now a 5-0 is very much on the cards (unless the Australians slip up as is their wont after winning a series smile )

What is a good site, and page on that site, to find out who are going to be late scratches?

I generally follow the espncricinfo website, Bx. Pretty good with fixtures, scores, analysis etc. But even they give a "preview" of matches only one day before the match starts, and sometimes that preview might list who's injured and might/might not play.

Thanks, that is the site I use, but must not be looking in the right places to get the injury might/might not play information.

That is the whole beauty of cricket and our comp here smile You never know who might or might not play smile One day a player is a star, next match he is carrying drinks!

Sometimes it also depends on conditions (for example, in India you can be sure Pragyan Ojha would play, but he very rarely gets a chance to play outside India...similarly, Sunil Narine is an automatic in ODIs and T20s for West Indies, but rarely gets selected in Tests!)

  • India and South Africa played out one of the greatest Test matches in history with a terrific last day chase by the hosts. First up, India had lost their last 8 away Tests, were blanked out in the ODI series before the Test, had their one practice match rained out, were with a totally new batting line up, and were expected to be rolled over by the best fast bowling unit in the world. Instead, led by Virat Kohli, Pujara and their 3 fast bowlers, they dominated the Test for 4 days and when they set the hosts 458 to win, a very famous victory was very much on the cards. But South Africa got their act together on the last day and showed great courage and spirit to show why they are the No. 1 team in the world. With some very resolute batting by Faf Du Plessis and De Villiers, they almost pulled off the highest run chase ever in the history of Test cricket, only to fall short by 7 runs! A fair result in the end, but I suspect South Africa will be the happier team going into the Boxing Day Test frown

  • Ross Taylor scored a 3rd Test century in a row, scored almost 500 runs in a 3-Test series and West Indies collapsed in their second innings for the umpteenth time this year as New Zealand completed a comfortable 2-0 win. Boult and Southee together picked up 38 wickets in the series to cap a good year in the end for New Zealand. They await India in February next.

  • srini701 picks up his first HoF for the season and stays put in 7th place! In fact, other than Howie72 and Sypher who switched places, the rest of us stuck to our positions smile But paper_aero is fast closing in on wwe84 at the top of the ladder and N-Bomb is not too far behind either.

  • Ozzz2002 made it back to back spoons, helped a lot by the fact that neither of his 2 picks from the New Zealand side played the Test! Ozzz's love for New Zealand cricket has just gone up a notch smile

The next round involves the 2 Boxing Day Tests in South Africa and Australia. Even if you don't pick teams, your previous teams can continue to score for you....

  • One of cricket's greatest ever all-rounders Jacques Kallis announced his retirement from Test cricket just before the 2nd Test against India. The top ranked Test team gave him a fitting farewell by playing with intensity and fire throughout the 5 days and despite weather intervening on the first 4 days, India just could not hang in with the hosts. Kallis scored a century in his final Test innings, Steyn was all fired up after a mediocre first Test and with most of the team pulling their weight (except Amla), South Africa were deserving winners of the match and the series.

  • England showed some rare fighting spirit for the first days of their Test but it was business as usual on the 3rd Day smile Chris Rogers, Nathan Lyon, Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson (again) all had a fantastic Test as Australia take a 4-0 lead. 5-0 is very much on the cards in the New Year....Promises to be a cracker of a Test series between South Africa and Australia in February.

  • Only 2 of us managed 1000+ scores this round. srini701 made it back-to-back HoFs and moved up one spot up the ladder, while gtho4 also moved past Sypher in the standings.

  • paper_aero almost broke his spoonless streak, but wwe84 just about helped him maintain his streak with a slightly worser team this round. In the bargain, N-Bomb raced past both of them with another very good round to become our new leader here.

The next round starts on December 31 (new series with Pakistan taking on Sri Lanka), so please lodge tips for that Test at least even if you wish to retain your team for the last Ashes Test.

Geez, I thought I had put up a shocker, but seems like it was a tough week.

By the way, Kallis > Tendulkar ;-) *ducks for cover*

  • Australia completed only the 3rd ever whitewash in the history of Ashes with another 3 day drubbing of a listless England...Andy Flower and Alistair Cook still want to continue to remain at the helm and rebuild the team...what choice do they have??

  • Angelo Mathews played a captain's role in both innings and helped an out-of-practice Sri Lanka hold Pakistan to level terms in their first Test.

  • Angelo Mathews as "trump" was a monster pick by BxBarracuda, who takes this round's HoF award because of that. His reward? He stays put in the cellar crazy

  • gtho4 and Sypher again switched places while Ozzz2002 and srini701 also switched places again. We had a host of "DNP"s in our teams, thanks to Pakistan, but Ozzz again takes the cake. This time, neither of his 2 selected Englishmen took the field, otherwise, he may well have taken the HoF grin

  • paper_aero has a second consecutive poor round, but there's nobody to save him this time. He takes his first spoon in 24 rounds, and that leaves us with 2 spoonless streaks going in this comp over the years.

Kallis > Tendulkar .....that's a debate for another day and another thread I am willing to take up, if the "instigator" is willing to participate wink tongue

  • Sri Lanka got the better of Pakistan as Saeed Ajmal was bettered, and could not weave his web of "doosras" anymore. Can Pakistan bounce back? They have one more Test to do so.

  • gtho4 kept faith in his first Test team and it paid off, as Mahela Jayawardene scored a big hundred. gtho4 picks his first HoF for the season and switches places with Sypher (again!)

  • Ozzz2002 picks up another spoon and switches places with srini701 (again!!)

  • Halfway through the season and nobody's threatening to run away with the comp this season! wwe84 again slips past N-Bomb for the lead, but at this stage, it still looks a wide, wide open comp!

I had a freak out moment just now, I saw results of an Australia v England match from today and didn't see a single one of my players listed, it took me a few minutes to figure out it was Tour match, not one of the ODIs.

smile Good to know you follow the scores so sincerely smile smile There will be more freak out moments when the players you pick for ODIs are rested and don't play after 1 or 2 matches smile smile

I have begrudginly grown accustomed to my picks sitting out an ODI or 2 in a series.

You'd think with my ladder placement this year that I'd never seen a scorecard lol.

I haven't seen a scorecard, and still wonder how one person can score so many.

  • This thread was actually posted as Round 10, but with the original round 9 (5 ODIs between England and Australia) going on till January 26, it didn't make sense to hold the results of this round back. The ODI series becomes round 10 now.

  • Sri Lanka went to the defensive extremes on the last 2 days of the Test and it cost them dear, as Pakistan, with nothing to lose, went on the offensive on the last day of the Test and chased down 300 to tie the series 1-1. There were some good performances, not from our "usual suspects", but from people like Ahmed Shehzad, Azhar Ali and Mohammad Talha (who??)

  • wwe84 picked up another HoF to extend his lead at the top of the ladder, while gtho4 and ozzz2002 also had good rounds there. Poor BxBarracuda managed to have 3 of his selections watch the action from the sidelines this Test and he ends up with his first spoon frown

  • But quite a few of us would be glad this particular series is over and out of the way. I have a feeling N-Bomb and paper_aero would both fancy their chances in the remaining rounds now.

The next 2 rounds promise to be the game-changers this season in our comp. I expect some serious movements in the ladder here once the 10 ODIs are tabulated and scored. This comp ain't over yet smile

A new round begins January 27 if the series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka goes ahead, otherwise we wait till February 4 for the next round.

My competition leading DNPs are going to only increase with Finn.

I'm amazed this is only my first spoon of the competition, I do feel back to back coming.

Bangledash will start my charge to the top. Who plays for their National team?

Actually Ozzz has more DNPs than you, and I am running you pretty close on the DNPs this season as well! (no wonder we are the bottom 3 then smile )

Bangladesh team....interesting mix...I am guessing the captain will be the only one we can be sure will play smile

  • The first of our "swing rounds" is done and it has brought about a lot of turbulence in the table here smile Australia won the 5 match series 4-1 but the series was a little more close than the scoreline suggests. To add to the woes of some of our players here, Australia rested some of their "big guns" once the series was decided!

  • srini701 had a dream team this round with his trump player Faulkner having a great series. As a result, srini leaps off the near bottom on the table to podium position, his highest placing all season!

  • Howie72 also had a great series and he also moves to his highest position all season.

  • paper_aero slipped badly this round and he will have some catching up to do now, while ozzz2002 managed another spoon.

The next round is another swing round, with the 5 match India-New Zealand ODI series coming up. We also have 2 fun rounds with Bangladesh coming up and all these rounds are set to change our table further smile

  • World No. 8 New Zealand THRASHED and toyed with a horribly listless "World Champions" and World No. 1 India in their 5 match ODI series mad The Indians couldn't bowl a single decent ball and take out Kohli and Dhoni, they don't have a batting line up that can play outside the subcontinent cry And to think India will be "defending" their title a year from now at the same place! God Save us confused

  • On the positive side, our second "swing" round here sees both srini701 and ozzz2002 complete their respective journies...one north-bound and the other south! srini701 has a second successive great round and another HoF, as he displaces wwe84 at the top of the ladder. ozzz2002 has a second consecutive poor round, adds another spoon to his tally, and allows BxBarracuda to jump over him in the cellar!

  • With 2 rounds of Bangladesh to come up and with the lead at the top not too much, this still is a very open competition! Still feel anybody in the top 6 can be on the podium by the time the final round is done!!

  • I wonder why Bangladesh continues to be a Test team! Very rarely do they even draw a Test, much less win it...it was no different against Sri Lanka now as the Lankans hammered them by an innings and a 1000 runs with everybody getting runs and everybody getting wickets!!

  • wwe84 sure will have plenty to complain this round. 3 of his 5 players did not even play and he picks up a spoon to slip a little further behind leader srini701.

  • ozzz2002 is not complaining....he had to wait till the Bangladesh team started playing to finally land his first HoF for the season, and this helps him exchange places with BxBarracuda again...first he was playing musical chairs for the top spot with wwe, then with srini for near bottom, and now he is playing musical chairs with BxBarracuda for the cellar position smile

  • Bangladesh managed to draw the second Test against Sri Lanka with lots of hundreds in the match. Kumar Sangakkara had a fabulous match, scoring 424 runs (the 3rd highest ever in a single Test match) while Sakib Al Hasan continued his good form with both bat and ball. Meanwhile, India had their chances but the New Zealand bowlers turned out to be better. Brendon McCullum continued his amazing Test form against India (both his 2 double centuries in Tests are against India) while Kane Williamson continued his form from the ODI series to notch another hundred. It was India's 10th loss in the last 13 overseas Tests stretching back to June 2011 frown

  • Sypher made all the noise in this round here. He picked BOTH Sangakkara and McCullum to be his trumps and boy, did it pay off! Sypher scored close to 2000 points in this round alone to jump up a couple of spots to be in podium position now....wwe84 picked up a second consecutive spoon to drop to his lowest all season...

  • Meanwhile, N-Bomb has hit the 50 mark in his spoonless streak while Sypher will join him next round if he avoids the spoon...

  • srini701 may be breathing easy at the top, but all podium places are still up for grabs...the Australia-South Africa series which forms the last leg for the season will decide the podium places.

If 424 is the third highest, what are the other two? That player must have been tired after all that running!

Graham Gooch had 456 runs in a test, also posting a 300 and a 100 in his two innings, that's the record.

Fortunate enough to have watched both McCullum and Sangakkara's innings', both superb knocks but two under-rated players. Sanga in particular is one of the greatest of all time.

  • A very fascinating and "eye-opening" week of Test matches there, with plenty of records. Mitchell Johnson gave one of the fiercest exhibitions of fast bowling in Test history to single-handedly demolish the world's best Test team. Experts are going back to Curtly Ambrose in early 1990s and to Michael Holding in 1976 for similar fast bowling performances! It was fascinating to watch some of the world's best batsmen hop around on their home ground as Johnson steamed in, and it is safe to say, South Africa may not have cracked yet, but they certainly won't forget the scars in a hurry...going to be a very interesting 2 Tests ahead there!

  • Brendon McCullum scored the FIRST EVER triple century in Test history for New Zealand, as the Kiwis went from trying to save the Test on Day 3 to almost winning it! McCullum battled pain, cramps and showed admirable focus even as Dhoni lost the plot with some weird field placements. India finally managed to save the second Test with Kohli scoring another century. This ends India's season and they now have gone 14 Tests over close to 3 years without winning abroad!

  • ozzz2002 picks up a second HoF in 3 rounds, thanks to McCullum (and he was cursing the very same Kiwis a few rounds back for netting him zero points in a Test). Sypher also had another great round, which means while our podium would probably be the first 3, the order in which they will finish will probably go down to the wire! Sypher also makes it to 50 spoonless rounds in the comp with this now....

  • gtho4 would want to forget this round in a hurry. One of his trumps did not play, while the other had a miserable Test, leaving gtho4 with his first spoon for the season (and leaving ONLY our 2 spoonless streaks going shocked )

    spoonless streaks running:
    N-Bomb - 51 and counting:13 (2013-14)+ 18 (2012-13)+ 17 (2011) +3 (last spoon in round 24 of 2010-11)
    Sypher - 50 and counting:14 (2013-14)+ 18 (2012-13)+ 17 (2011) +1 (last spoon in round 26 of 2010-11)

According to your breakdown - I was not given trump points for Kohli? Which means I should get an additional 148 points. this would put me into 2nd place and only 245pts behind 1st !! smile

Srini, you should be able to go in and adjust that. Since we can edit posts with HTML in it now, it is just looking for the correct 148 to change to 296. I'm not a mod, or I'd fix it.

Yes...sometimes they don't matter to much, but this time around, some of those trumps are really making a difference! I was the only one who didn't pick Mitchell Johnson last round, and Bx had him as a trump...his team otherwise had a average round, but Johnson's score alone was half of what my entire team scored smile

Podium still open if you have a good 2 rounds, Bomb smile

  • Cricket has a funny and nasty way of coming back to bite you for things you say and do frown Last week, I had felt and written it would be tough for South Africa to forget the scars inflicted on them by Mitchell Johnson in the first Test. I had also written we had just the 2 spoonless streaks going in in our comp here!

  • South Africa bounced right back into the series by thrashing Australia in 4 days, with the Aussies collapsing spectacularly on Day 4. Dale Steyn was on fire, with the ball reversing a lot (now Dave, that's a topic for a different discussion wink ) and he just ripped through the Australians after Rogers and Warner put on more than a 125 for the first wicket. The last 9 Australian batsmen scored 22 runs between them, the least that the Australian line up managed in any TEST since 1902!!!!

  • Howie72 had said he needed to have a different trump from srini and Sypher, and his trump pick paid off, with De Villiers coming good again. Howie picks his FIRST HoF for the season, to complete that column for us this season. More importantly, he leapfrogged Sypher to second place, and is less than 200 points off srini with a round to go!

  • Sypher's spoonless streak touched 50 last round and there it stays shocked ... Shaun Marsh had a big fat zero to show in this Test and Michael Clarke didn't have too great a Test either. Meaning Sypher picked up his first spoon in 50 rounds in this comp, stretching over 4 seasons (see below) and now leaves N-Bomb with the sole spoonless streak going....does Sypher's streak merit a place in the FT record books? gtho4 or Dg_Dave to answer and take action if required, please grin

That leaves us with just 1 round to go....srini701 had a cushion of over 500 points just 2 rounds back, but that is down to less than 200 now. N-Bomb is over 400 points behind 3rd placed Sypher, and would need a massive implosion from Sypher to get on to the podium. But Sypher himself would still fancy his chances of toppling Howie72 again, while Howie is realistically still with a chance to claim even the top slot!!! The podium for the season may have been decided, but in what order? We will know after the 3rd and final Test between Australia and South Africa, the last round for the season smile smile

Yes, Sypher's streak will go into the FT Hall of Fame...you only need 40+ to get there. Well done sir!

Congrats to Sypher on a half-ton, and even bigger plaudits to N-Bomb- 52 and still counting is bloody amazing!

  • It turned out to be a fantastic Test and series to end this season's comp of World Cricket in FT! Less than 5 overs to be bowled on the final day of the series and with South Africa playing for pride and an improbable draw, even as an injured Ryan Harris kept running in to try and bowl the Australians to another famous win...it couldn't get any better than this smile Australia won the 3rd Test to take the series 2-1, and since the beginning of the Ashes in November when we started our comp, have now "forced" Graeme Swann, Kevin Pietersen and now Graeme Smith into retirements!

  • We saw all Test teams except Zimbabwe in action this season, and it was a roller coaster ride for almost every one of us. We all had our ups and downs during the season, but our "Mr. Consistent" has to be N-Bomb. He stretches an incredible spoonless streak into another year (53 rounds and counting). Sypher gave him company for 50 of those rounds, before picking up one in the penultimate round of this season frown ... N-Bomb failed to make it to the podium, and Sypher has the consolation of finishing on the podium this season smile

  • gtho4 lodged teams at the beginning of each series and generally let them play, a strategy that didn't quite work out this year. He had some great rounds, but had mostly average scored because of this, ended up with 2 of the last 3 spoons and the cellar spot for the season!

  • Defending champion from last season paper_aero was almost absent the whole season. He seemed content to be in the middle rungs right through this season and knowing the man, here's one guy who will be looking to bounce right back in the next comp smile

  • BxBarracuda was never higher than 6 the entire season and seemed to get the nuances right only towards the end. He and Ozzz2002 probably had more DNPs this season than any one of us, and this cost them both dear. Ozzz in fact was in the running for most part of the season before falling away.

  • wwe84 had an up and down season. He was either 1 or 2 for 11 rounds of the season, before suddenly coming apart with 2 back-to-back spoons. He never recovered from that shock and finally finished 4th this year.

  • Howie72 was happy lurking around for most of the time before making his move. He had a great last 3-4 rounds and this propelled him right on to the top. If not for one bad pick in Nathan Lyon in the final round, Howie may well have finished first on the ladder!

  • srini701 was also in the middle and bottom rungs for most of the season before 2 back-to-back HoFs pushed him to the top. He managed to stay there after that and finally takes home this season's top spot, thanks to Howie's "wild" pick in that final round smile

Our 3 medallists this season then are: srini701, Howie72 and Sypher.

A biggggg "thank you" to all for taking part and for continuing to encourage this comp smilee . The next edition of World Cricket begins in October-November again, while the next cricket competition here will be the hit and giggle IPL in April. Hoping to see a good number turn up for that one....

I only picked Nathan Lyon to be different to Srini otherwise I would have had Mitchell Johnson like usual....that 135 points between them was the difference smile

Did Australia lose 11 or 12 wickets? I thought 494/7 and 303/5 would mean 12 lost, but the wickets in the wicket column only equal 11 (1 + 4 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 1). The other half of the table adds to 20.

Dave,

Looking at the match scorecard, Australia lost 12 wickets but the bowlers only claimed 11 of them - the 12th was a run out which isn't credited to the bowler.

I see. He's still out and a wicket is still lost, but no score for it.

Thought I may have ended the spoonless streak in the last week there by not picking Warner but thankfully not!

Congrats to all the place-getters, another fun comp srini
