One of the great classics of Russian cinema, and one of the finest anti-war films of all time. It was one of the first films to move away from the blatant propaganda of the Stalinist era, and its story has universal relevance. Quite simply, it's one of the most honest, powerful and heartbreaking films about war and its consequences that I have ever seen. However many times I come back to it, it never fails to move me to tears.
