Australian Open 2014

The first Grand Slam of the year starts Monday, January 13. The draws will be out on January 10 and we will know the path to the final for defending champions Novak Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka, as also the red-hot Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal.

gtho4 and srini701 will try to defend their titles here in our FT comps, but will it be your turn this year? Sign up here if you are interested. Separate threads will be posted once the draws are out.

My apologies in advance if Leo was planning to post a thread and run the comp this year smile

  • Na Li becomes the first Asian woman to win "Asia's Grand slam", but with Serena Williams in an imperious form and with Victoria Azarenka not too far behind, who expected her to come to the final? Worse still, who ever expected Dominika Cibulkova to make to to the final or for Eugenie Bouchard (who?) to reach the semis?
  • Trust ozzz2002 to think of the impossible! He picked Na Li to win the title, and also picked Bouchard to reach the quarters. None of his other 6 picks made it, but these two picks were enough for him to win the title here in our comp!
  • gtho4 also picked Bouchard to reach the last 8 and this gave him second spot on the podium.
  • 4 players finished tied on 32 points each and the tie-break had to be used to separate them. However, nothing could separate Dizart and paper_aero and they share the bronze medal for this year.
  • George95 managed just ONE single correct pick to avoid the golden spoon but still takes home the wooden spoon for 2014 smile
  • Men's results follow...

  • With the "big 4" and Del Potro all in the fray, not to mention David Ferrer and Thomas Berdych, the odds on Stan "the man" Wawrinka winning a grand slam were very, very long indeed. And when he drew Djokovic in the quarters, not many would given him a ghost of a chance to upset a man who had won his last 21 matches at the Australian Open! But Wawrinka played the match of his life in the quarter-finals and went on to beat Nadal in the final, becoming the first man since 1993 (Sergei Bruguera, French Open) to beat BOTH the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in a Grand Slam!
  • We fared a lot better than in the women's section, with 7 of the top 8 seeds making it to the quarters, but taking the title for 2014 is Dizart, who just pips wwe84 by a single point. paper_aero takes the bronze.
  • ozzz2002 goes from winner in the women's section to a spoon in the men's, with just Nadal scoring some points for him.
  • Congrats to all the medal winners in this year's Australian Open then, and see you all at French Open in May.

We will be back.

I was leaning twoards Bouchard and made the mistake of thinking the early heatwave could effect players from cooler weather countries.

I had a feeling Sharapova wasn't going to make it to the quarters this year, but didn't expect Cibulkova to play as ferocious as she did.

I also put a lot of my eggs in the Sloane Stephens basket, which didn't work out for me.

The Men's side I have never been able to figure out.
