Nascar
2014

These are the details for this year's comp:
  • There are 36 races; the first race is the Daytona 500 on February 24th. The last race is at Homestead on November 17th.
  • We pick names for our teams in this competition and the team names can be up to 17 characters, including spaces.
  • We will be picking 4 drivers this year for each race and all 4 of those drivers will be starters.
  • Slip-streaming rule will be more like it was in the past, which is you can't have the same line-up as any tippers within 5 places behind you in the competition.
  • Point Scoring - we receive points for the first 3 of the 4 drivers from our starting lineup to cross the finish line (aka our 4th placed driver is ignored) i.e. we score points for 3 drivers, but we have a "reserve" or 4th driver in our starting lineup.
  • The points we receive are the exact same points awarded by NASCAR for a race.
  • Default will be the 4 drivers from your team that were in your lineup in the previous week.
  • Deadline: Will always be midnight Friday FT time. There's a grace period of 3 or 4 hours, but please don't push your luck past that! Late starters can join by posting their team before midnight on any Friday, and they're in for the next race + all subsequent races. They come in at the rear of the field, on equal points with last.
  • No transfer windows this season, so you can change your line-ups each week.

  • New Chase Rules - Field expands to 16 drivers, including points leader.
Race winners automatically make Chase field.
Points used as tiebreaker if more than 16 race winners.
Competitors will be eliminated during Chase after weeks 29, 32 and 35.
A win during a Chase race automatically qualifies a driver for the next elimination round.
Final four will compete for title at season's final race and the highest finisher of those 4 in the final race at Homestead will be the Champion.
There are of course more technical rules regarding who makes the Chase and they can be found here http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-media/a...t-changes.html.

  • In the same manner as this past season, we will only consider the top 12 drivers in the Chase for the list of drivers you can only take 2 of without penalty for next year.

  • The first 2 Chase drivers anyone picks have no penalties, if you pick a third Chase driver then it is minus 5 from you total score, pick a 4th Chase driver and it's minus 10 more from your total score.

    Last year's standings:

    Position Points Back

    1 Jimmie Johnson --
    2 Matt Kenseth -19
    3 Kevin Harvick -34
    4 Kyle Busch -55
    5 Dale Earnhardt Jr. -56
    6 Jeff Gordon -82
    7 Clint Bowyer -83
    8 Joey Logano -96
    9 Greg Biffle -98
    10 Kurt Busch -110
    11 Ryan Newman -133
    12 Kasey Kahne -136

  • If you have the same team as someone else: if you take the plunge and change a driver, any team within 5 spots in front of you cannot change their team to match yours. If they do, it's an invalid choice, and they keep their original team.
  • If your team is different: the blocking rule applies even if your team is different from a team below you, e.g. if you change your team and it now matches someone who's within 5 spots below you, it's an invalid choice.

EXAMPLES: whoever's running second last can change their team to whatever they want, as long as it doesn't match the tailender's. Whoever's running first cannot change their team to match anyone in spots 2 through 6.
N.B. this new rule will not operate in reverse. e.g. a player can change his team to match a player in front of him or her (don’t know why you would, but you can!)

Tie-breaker:
  • in the unlikely event that two or more tipsters finish on equal points at the end of the comp, weekly wins/wooden spoons will be used as a tie breaker e.g. there's a triple dead-heat for 1st place -- player A has 14 weekly wins and 8 wooden spoons (+6) -- player B has 7 weekly wins and no spoons (+7) -- player C has 11 weekly wins and 4 wooden spoons (+7). The podium positions are C-B-A on a count back.
Final Note:
  • While we are picking drivers for our teams, we are actually picking the car number the drivers are driving. If a driver is suspended for the race or has to leave the race before it's finished for whatever reason and someone else gets in their car to race it, anyone who picked the original driver of the car gets full points for where that car number finished. Last season Kyle Busch was suspended for a race Mike McDowell drove Kyle's #18 car for the race, people who has picked Kyle received the points which McDowell scored while in the #18 car.
Srini701 is the two time defending titleholder; he has won the competition the last two years and is the first person to defend his title in this competition. This year's comp is the 9th running of a Nascar comp; Sypher is the only other player to have won this twice. Previous winners:
    2001 CarolinaCarol Pling gtho4
    2005 Sypher ElfTwinkle silverginger
    2006 Howie72 doomed ElfTwinkle
    2007 doomed racegirl5 ElfTwinkle

    2011 illiniman14 George95 gtho4

I'll correct that srini, I was focused too much on the rules changes and possible competition change that I didn't update that line.

I'm going to cancel the proposed changes regarding requirements to switch drivers during the season without penalty.

But just to amuse the tipping competition host it would be appreciated to see some more adjusting of line ups during the season.

Need to remove that no one has successfully defended their title.

We have 7 starters for this year, that being said, this will be the last year for me running this competition. We have more than enough competitions going on to keep us busy week to week. Thanks to all who have played over the last few years. Good luck to the tippers this year.

It doesn't matter dave, it's done now, it was never a big competition when I've run it and I look forward to the final season. I appreciate your concern and support.

In real news the Daytona 500 is about to get restarted after an over 6 hour rain delay, which parked the drivers during lap 39.

xHere are the highlights for the off season driver changes, Stewart-Haas Racing was the biggest mover, increasing to a 4 car team, adding Kevin Harvick, formerly of Richard Childress Racing, Kurt Busch, formerly of Furniture Row Racing, while ending their relationship with Ryan Newman. Childress added Ryan Newman in the famed #3 car to replace Harvick, while Newman moved to the Childress team, replacing Jeff Burton, who will compete part time for Michael Waltrip Racing. The Waltrip team was shaken up following the controversy at Richmond last year, lost sponsor NAPA Auto Parts and Martin Truex Jr. who drove the NAPA car, Brian Vickers will drive full time in the car he shared time with Mark Martin and Michael Waltrip last year, while Waltrip will be in Burton’s car for the Super Speedway races. Truex has taken Kurt Busch’s place in the Furniture Row Racing car. Juan Pablo Montoya has left NASCAR to go back to Indy Car racing and is replaced by Kyle Larson. This years drivers competing for the Sprint Cup rookie of the year are Austin Dillon, Bowman, Cole Whitt, Justin Allgaier, Michael Annett, Kligerman and Kyle Larson.

Austin Dillon had the pole for the race and the hottest driver on the track, Denny Hamlin, who won the last race of the year at Homestead-Miami, the Sprint Unlimited and 2nd Budweiser Duel leading up to this race, soon took the lead. The start of the race was uneventful as the three wide racing eventually led to single line racing for the leaders, as the top of the track was faster than the bottom. Lap 31 had Martin Truex Jr. starting out with a rough day for his new team as his engine was gone. Most leaders just took fuel and some two tires. Hamlin had the lead as on lap 38 when the race was red flagged due to rain, which ended up lasting over 6 hours, turning this day race into a night one. Kyle Busch takes the lead after the delay, but Denny Hamlin was soon back up front and blocking the two lines chasing him well, moving back and forth between lines so neither could get a run to pass him. First Kyle Busch had equipment issues pulling his air gun with him after a pit stop, then Aric Almirola pulled his jack down pit lane, which forced both to do a pass through penalty. Tony Stewart didn’t have a great first day back in the car, but he completed the race. Kasey Kahne catches a bad break when trying to pit as Michael Annett spun out in front of him and to avoid being hit he ended up with a speeding penalty on pit row. Clint Bowyer day ended early and Carl Edwards found himself in the lead at one point, but that is when Jr. took over the lead. The wrecks started coming late in the race and Greg Biffle was able to take the lead for a while when Jimmie Johnson chose to push him instead of Jr. off a restart. The Penske cars worked together all day, pitting at the same time to keep their teamwork flowing the whole race. Jr. battled Biffle and Edwards off of a restart and with 17 laps to go Jr. took the lead, while Jeff Gordon snuck into the top five picture. Austin Dillon spins out Ryan Newman with seven laps to go and they collect a lot of cars. Jr. cruises to the win, with a final lap wreck behind him, which had Kyle Busch crossing the finish line in reverse.

BxBarracuda took the first HoF of the season with 130, while ozzz2002 landed the spoon with 94 as both Martin Truex and Kasey Kahne had surprisingly bad first days of the season.

We tipped a solid 116 as a group with four tippers at 120 or over and 13 of our 28 drivers picks finished in the top five.

Next race is next Sunday at Phoenix.

The day belonged to Kevin Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the Penske team of Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano. They were the top four for most of the race and finished as the top four. There were some other contenders during the day, but most cars just found themselves being lapped by the big four. Danica Patrick still can't keep herself out of middle of multi car wrecks and is still looking for a break out race, her claim to fame as a driver so far has been the pole at Daytona last year.

Sypher did it for at least the second time in this competitions history, earning the maximum points for this race, a feat only accomplished by srini last year in week 28, and getting the HoF with 132 points while ozzz can't catch a break yet as he gets his 2nd spoon of the year with 85.

Our average was still high at 115, and Sypher tied Bx for the early season lead.

Next race is next Sunday at Las Vegas.

xPenske held the first row to start with Brad Keselowski on the pole and Joey Logano right next to him. Chad Knaus, Jimmie Johnson's crew chief, was prophetic during a pre-race interview where he commented how fuel mileage could play a factor at the end of the race.

Logano took the early lead. After Josh Wise's engine blew leaving fluid on the track on lap 17 only Keselowski didn't pit to gain back track position he lost spinning his tires on the start and it didn't hurt him as a debris caution on lap 46 allowed him to get back on the same pit schedule as everyone else. Kyle Busch was the early big mover making his way to the lead before the green flag pit stops around lap 88. Keselowski hit the wall at one point and Kevin Harvick stormed to the lead around the midway point of this 267 lap race and unfortunately for Harvick there was a caution for debris on lap 155 and he hit the debris before heading to the pits. It was unsure if the debris was a factor but just before lap 200 Harvick was off the pace with a brake issue. Keselowski's team continued to pit on their own schedule to stay near the front. Dale Earnhardt Jr. took the lead with 55 laps to go, but while with the lead on the final lap and his car running low on fuel his engine cut off on him and before it luckily restarted Keselowski had taken the lead and the checkered flag.

Gtho4's Ford's drove him to the HoF with 129 and the season lead by 2, ozzz2002 just missed making triple digits but still landed the spoon with 99.

We have avoided a letdown so far as we averaged 113 and a half points for this round and the top 6 drivers are all within 10 points of each other after leaders Bx and Sypher, whose drivers were either burning hot, finishing 1-2, or ice cold, finishing 33-41, had down weeks, making this a very interesting start to the season.

Next race is next Sunday at Bristol.

x It was a rainy day in Bristol that started with a 2 hour rain delay.

Denny Hamlin had the pole and Brad Keselowski was next to him on the front row, with fellow Team Penke drive Joey Logano in the top 5. Tony Stewart and Brian Vickers started deep in the pack at 37th and 38th. By lap 19 Keselowski already had the lead and was lapping cars on this short track. There was a competition caution on lap 50 and Stewart and Kurth Busch were in the middle of the pack and haven’t put it together this year yet. Lap 60 had Parker Kligerman hitting a battery that fell out of Alex Bowman’s car, and white packing paper streaming all over the track behind his car. Matt Kenseth was dominant early, Joey Logano dropped from 3rd to 20th when he lost power steering and then Jimmie Johnson got a flat on lap on lap 114. The race restarted much later and between laps 125 and 198 Timmy Hill had run into the back of Matt Kenseth at some point and Kenesth’s car. Lap 200 of 500 had Kyle Busch leading his brother Kurt and Jamie McMurray at the head of the field. Lap 276 had Kyle Busch get caught during a green flag pit stop when Ryan Truex hit the wall and brought out a caution and at the time of the caution only 15 cars were on the lead lap. Lap 315 had Kenseth leading Carl Edwards in the front and lap 325 had Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the pits with a vibration. Lap 335 had Michael McDowell spinning out David Ragan for another caution. Earnhardt’s team had the hood open and unlikely drivers Kyle Larson and Aric Almirola were in 2nd and 3rd at the restart. Kyle Busch spun out on lap 384 and the only other driver to take any real damage was Kurt Busch who hit the wall to avoid running into Kyle. Kenseth got some bad luck when his tires got mucked up and he lost some handling and ended up in the wall. Lap 422 had lead lap driver Martin Truex Jr. hitting the wall and brining out a caution, which allowed Carl Edwards to take a chance and stay out on the track for position. Kevin Harvick’s car starting smoking badly causing him to hit the wall, and Keselowski ran into the back of Jamie McMurray damaging his hood in effort to avoid Harvick. The race ended under caution due to impending rain while they were attempting a green/white/checkered finish. Carl Edwards took the win and only 3 of the 11 cars who led laps during the race finished in the top 10.

Next race is next Sunday at Fontana.

x Gonzo being the Grand Marshall for the race was the first clue things would get a little crazy.

Matt Kenseth was on the pole and Brad Keselowski was next to him, which made this his 4th straight first row start. The Nationwide race the day before was won by Kyle Larson and had all the teams concerned with tire issues which plagued that race. Kevin Harvick had bad luck again as a tire issue of his brought out an early caution for the race and big mover Jeff Gordon had his effort negated when he was caught speeding on pit row. Harvick ended up at the back of the lead lap line after pitting early, Keselowski went from 1st to 27th and Kyle Busch took the lead. Lap 43 had Dale Earnhardt Jr. hit the wall when a tire went down, Keselsowski had a flat but was able to get to pit row before any damage and Tony Stewart went spinning out in the middle of the track. Lap 70 had Brian Scott plowing into Aric Almirola, who had slowed due to Sam Hornish Jr. slowing down in front of him, and Hornish was also caught up in the accident. Kasey Kahne ended up in the garage early for a rear hub issue. Joey Logano’s day ended early with an engine issue. Greg Biffle moved up to 8th before getting a flat tire and losing spots having to pit early, which was followed shortly by Carl Edwards spinning out on the track. There was a lot of jockeying with drivers in and out of the top 10 all day with a record 25 lead changes by lap 137 of 200. Within the next 5 laps Biffle overheats, Harvick has another tire go down as does Danica Patrick. At lap 188 Jimmie Johnson seems to be cruising to any easy victory, but it wasn’t his day as he had a tire go down on him on lap 193, which was followed by Marcos Ambrose having a tire down on lap 195 and Brad Keselowski on Lap 196. Clint Bowyer’s spin out on lap 198 brining out a caution led to 6 laps being added to the race to get a green/white/caution fininsh, which was won in duel by Kyle Busch over Kyle Larson.

BxBarracuda takes the HoF this week with 126 and the season lead, the Ford's that dominated last week's race for gtho failed him this week as he takes the elevator on the ladder from the penthouse to the 2nd floor, illinman has overcome missing the first week and has moved up to 5th, and ozzz had no luck again at the rough and tumble Bristol track taking the spoon with a 52.

Next race is next Sunday at Martinsville.

x It was an up and down week for the NASCAR extended family during the week, with Matt Kenseth’s wife having a baby. That was however overshadowed by the passing of Richard Petty’s beloved wife Lynda and Bobby Waltrip, brother to announcer Darrell and owner/driver/announcer Michael.

There was no delay in the cautions coming out as Parker Kligerman spun out and wrecked on lap 2 and lap 40 had a competition caution. Chaos ensued during the caution as Kasey Kahne slowed in front of Brad Keselowski and Kurt Busch went around Keselowski to the high side, which didn’t give Brad any room to avoid Kasey and all 3 cars took damage and Brad with bitter feelings for Kurt. Drivers are moving up and down the top 10 early, more concerned with not getting caught up in any wrecks early than driving hard for the lead. Tony Stewart was following up his 5th place finish last week driving in the top 5 early. Lap 79 had Keselowski back on the track without his hood and Kurt quite concerned about what Keselowski might do to him. It didn’t take long for the 2 meet up as by Lap 87 there were running side by side, with Brad slipping in front and doing all he could to get on Kurt’s nerves by blocking and braking in front of him, but not going as far as crashing into him, other than some solid love taps from behind. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. actually got the worst of this as he ran up into the wall trying to pass the Kurt and Brad while they were talking with their cars to each other. A lot of switching of positions in the top 10 for a large part of this race and if you ended up on the high line, good luck trying to get back into line without losing at least 5 positions. Jamie McMurray hits the wall on lap 200. On the lap 231 caution for debris Kevin Harvick had an extended pit stop with a chassis chain issue. Kyle Larson was in the top 10 until he hit the wall on lap 341. Martin Truex continued to struggle in the Furniture Row car as he spun out on lap 410, which was still 1 less spin out on the day than his brother Ryan. Kurt Busch starts to power his was to front late, while Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson and Clint Bowyer were trying to hold each other off up front. Lap 458 had Edwards spinning out and Clint having a bad pit stop putting him back to 10th. With 12 laps to go Kurt Busch’s patience with Keselowski earlier pays off as he takes the lead from Jimmie Johnson, maneuvers through some lap traffic to take the win and give Gene Haas his first win with his name on the hood of the car.

Brad Keselowski left most of us without a safety net when he finished 38th this week.

Srini becomes the fifth different HoF winner this year, taking this week's one with 114 and ozzz takes his fifth spoon of the season.

Next race is next Sunday at Texas.

xIn other news team owner Gene Haas is thinking of adding a team to F1 racing next season.

The race was rained out on Sunday and took place on Monday.

Even before the green light Brad Keselowski had car trouble relating to the track jet dryers. On lap 14, of 334, Dale Earnhardt Jr. lost control, went into the infield, pelting Jimmie Johnson’s car with turf and dirt, and hit the wall ending his day early. Johnson was never able to have a competitive car the rest of the day. Kevin Harvick had engine trouble today and was out of the race early. Jeff Gordon was looking good early and Jamie McMurray had official trouble on lap 187, when a NASCAR official blocked some of his pit crew on a stop and he lost 2 seconds in the pits when he was in the top 10 and on lap 205 Jamie had to pit early due to a flat tire. Lap 252 it was Gordon and the Penske cars of Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski in the lead and only 16 cars on the lead lap. Logano took control from there building as much as 5 second lead with 53 to go. A late caution to cause a green/white/checkered had all the leaders pitting due to low fuel. Jeff Gordon and Brian Vickers went out 1-2 taking only 2 tires, while Logano took 4 and restarted 3rd. Keselowski would have been 4th but was speeding on pit row and moved back. Gordon and Vickers held off Joey Logano and a hard charging Kyle Busch for the first lap, but Logano was too much on the final lap taking the win.

Gtho took his second HoF of the year with with 116 while Sypher got crushed by the early exit of Dale Jr. combined with Kevin Harvicks continuing troubles since winning a race taking the spoon with a 68. We only had four of our drivers finish in the top five this week and no one had more than one driver finish in that top five.

Bx had his worst week and has srini and Howie looming larger in his rear view mirror.

Manufacturer count has 97 Chevy's have been picked by tippers, 83 Ford's and 40 Toyota's. So far there have been 8 different Chevy, 5 different Ford and 4 different Toyota drivers chosen.

Next race is Saturday at Darlington.
