One thing about going out late in the afternoon is you get the good sunsets. This is Stokes Field in Thames Ditton just underneath London

One from my company's past, a desk top calculator from 1966. Biro for size comparison!
We're loaning this one & many others to the National Museum of Computing at Bletchley.
I'll post a few more photos of the insides of the machine as and when I remember. Really
interesting how things have moved on in the last 50 years. The only real difference between
this and today's pocket calculators (other than size and power requirements) is that it has
16 digits compared to 8 for most pocket calculators.

They may have been huge but they still worked and were pretty easy to use. I don't remember them that old but do remember the similar adding machines which printed the results on a roll instead and weren't as big as they didn't need the display. That must have valves or it wouldn't have needed a case that big, and seems to use them for the illuminated numbers as well like small light bulbs.

That calculator didn't use valves David, it was all transistors by then - photo to follow - but the
display was very valve-like.

We finally made it to the end of the cable car ride at the Niederwald Landscape Park above Rudesheim am Rhein. After a short stroll we arrive at the Niederwalddenkmal, a momument to commemorate the foundation of the German Empire after the end of Franco-Prussian War. Construction began in 1871 and the monument was inaugurated in 1883. The central figure is Germania who holds the recovered crown of the emperor in the right hand and in the left the Imperial Sword.

This is one of over 30 printed circuit boards used in the calculator. The circular silvery
components are transistors, other components include diodes & resistors. This was pretty
much cutting-edge technology at the time. Microprocessors for calculators were still a few years
away at this time.

(Incidentally, the company I work for played a big part in the development of integrated
circuits in partnership with Intel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Busicom )

Edited to add the interesting info at the end!

I love PCBs, and even have a coaster here made from one. I couldn't ever solder well enough to make them but bought the parts and either wired them on a board with clips or got someone else to do it. I'm surprised it's such a big unit as there isn't any space needed for valves inside.

Great photos everyone. Love the calculator! Reminds me of the first computer I ever worked on - it was the size of a piano! My first desk calaculator was the size of a shoebox!

Is there anybody out there who lives in or near Hammond, Indiana, who might be willing to take some photos for me?

My mother-in-law is 93. She was from Hammond and has not been back there for decades and is not in a position to make the trip now. I thought it might be nice if somebody could take a picture of her old house for her so she can see what it looks like today. We looked on Google Earth but it appears that they did not take pictures of that particular block (hopefully it still exists).

The calculator didn't use valves David, the transistors did the same job at a fraction of the size.
This unholy mess is the wiring loom that connected all the PCB sockets together. So glad I
never had to work on these. By the time I joined the company, these machines were pretty
much obsolete having been replaced by the much smaller ones using the new microprocessor
technology.

Edited for reasons of grammar! You're welcome.

Hammond Indiana- now when I passed through in 1980 my grandpa took a couple of pictures but didn't label them. They're at my mother's but I can borrow them on Friday and scan them in, I don't know if it was South Bend where we stopped and passed through Hammond or stopped at both but I'll post it somewhere and see if it can be recognised, but will Streetview the main streets as well as that may tell me directly.

I always take photos of power transformers when I see them, there's one every quarter of a mile or so. They are either housed like this one in Southall or open to the elements.

Showing off my camera's night ability, I've had it a couple of years and had to find an undeclared menu to really get it to see clearly. These are shops on Uxbridge Road in Hayes. As it doesn't link anywhere I go I don't think I'd ever used it till last month when I went there to get photos for that reason.
