Forsythia - putting bunches of flowers out there as though there can't possibly be more frosts to come; I hope it's right!

I was out for a drive in the country today with a FunTrivia friend and another chum. Seeing animals like these in the fields really made me feel that Spring has arrived!

I rescued this praying mantis from inside yesterday, it ran up my arm to my shoulder as I was heading outside but eventually persuaded it to go on to a leaf. However when I started photographing it, the praying mantis decided to reach out for the camera and climb on it.... smile

When you have backyard "chooks" you get an occasional surprise.
This was a fresh egg from a healthy hen with no rooster.
I posted the picture on a chicken forum and received several theories but no definite explanation.
I have my own ideas, does anyone else?
If anyone is interested, I will post a follow-up picture later.

A real life Kinder egg? wink

An egg inside an egg?

An egg with kidney stones?

Stop me someone, I could go on... and on...!

No idea what an inside out egg is but you've come to the right place to find out.

Sometimes the most ordinary subjects make the best photos, this is just outside Horley.

Why does that egg photo make me go yuk?
Here is our newest orchid. It will receive the usual abusive(non) treatment and survive well like all the others.

Because it doesn't make you go yolk?

Ha! When I lived in Singapore I used to plonk cut orchids in a milk bottle. We didn't have vases and orchids grew like weeds so milk bottles were what they got. smile

That egg is weird looking! Is it a double yolked egg, but one of the yolks is not coloured because the chicken was sick? Edit: oops no, you said it was healthy. I cracked open an egg once where the yolk was a white/pale colour,(but there was no yellow/orange bit) - I'd be interested to know what theories you have.

Howie, that is fabulous!

Mystery Egg Episode 2 - (Ren may choose to avert her eyes at this point.)

The prevailing theory from the Chicken Forum is as follows;
There is a phenomenon called Fairy Egg, where a temporary glitch in one of the stages of egg formation will cause a tiny yolkless egg to be laid. Many of the forum knew of it, but none has seen it.
That little pearlescent sac in my first picture may have been destined to be a Fairy Egg, but before a shell could form it was enveloped by the yolk and white of the egg further up the production line. Then a normal shell was deposited around the combination.
Out of curiosity I dissected the sac, which was a membrane enclosing thick eggwhite and a little "jellybean" which seemed to be just semi-solid albumen. No indication of disease or trauma.
Plain Jane the Plymouth Rock is laying normal eggs, and Flopsymopsy gets the award for her answer, "an egg inside an egg." As far as I can tell.

I apologise if this has put you off your Easter eggs!

For once we have a clear night in Melbourne when an eclipse is occurring - this was taken about 15 minutes ago. The last light was just hitting the moon. I am definitely going to buy a tripod and a remote shutter trigger.

Haha, I've learned a lot about human biology since I joined Funtrivia and now I know what a dermoid cyst is there's not much that can scare me about a hen's egg! Plus my mum kept hens when I was little - they were left over after WWII and as we still had rationing she kept them. I don't remember any of the details but she used to tell scarey stories about the things that can go wrong with egg-laying - and there's a lot!

Good forensic work, auntie1. Is my prize a bag of Smarties?

The last sunrise before daylight savings ended so I can no longer pretend that winter is not far away....though yesterday it was a pleasant 23 degrees....today not so pleasant.

With the seagulls at the Smithfield rock pools in Timaru.

Wow. Just wow. Howie.

Funny eggs, Auntie! We've had chooks for years and have never seen anything like it .. we might get the occasional double yolker but that's as exciting as ours get!

We set up a new trough this week.

I went to a 70s-themed party recently and decided I try to make a hat like the one worn by
Noddy Holder of the band Slade. It didn't turn out too bad I thought:

Wow, I can almost see Noddy wearing that - or I would if you weren't wearing it already. wink

Amazing sunrise Howie!

One of my favourite themes, mainly as till recently we had hardly any of these sort of buildings in London (it's the clay) so made a point of taking their photos when I saw them. This is the Travelodge in Penge.

Another view of the sunrise last Saturday, this time with a silhouette of a walker.
