Wimbledon 2016

Novak Djokovic is on a different plane these days at the Slams. He's currently holding all 4 slam titles, is 2/2 in Slams this year, and has won the last 2 Wimbledon titles....anybody thinks he can be beaten when Wimbledon kicks off from Monday, June 27?

Serena Williams has lost the last two slam finals but looking to defend her title at Wimbledon as well...She is a 6 time Wimbledon champion and looking to equal Steffi Graf's tally of 22 Slam titles...Garbine Muguruza, who lost to her in last year's final, would probably like to have a say after winning at Roland Garros a few weeks back...what do you all think?

paper_aero and Howie72 are defending their titles here in our comps, but ElfTwinkle is 2/2 in the men's comps this year....Any of you would like to have a say in the matter, please sign up here. Tipping threads will be up soon as the draws are out later this week.

  • Serena Williams has finally pulled alongside Steffi Graf's tally of 22 Grand Slam singles titles! In her 3rd final of the year, she got her revenge back against the lady who beat her in Melbourne in January, Angelique Kerber, in straight sets and now stands 2 shy of the all-time tally of 24 held by Margaret Court. And she says she won't stop anytime soon! Age is just a number in the minds of the two Williams sisters, and they proved it in good measure this year at Wimbledon. Venus made it to the semi-finals before being stopped by Kerber, and the two sisters combined to win the women's doubles title as well!
  • Garbine Muguruza found life tough as a Grand Slam champion, losing in the second round itself. Other "Big" names all faltered well before the quarters, and we again had 2 unseeded players making it to the last 8. Elena Vesnina went one better than Yarsolav Shvedova, reaching her maiden slam semis too! Of course neither of tehse two were anywhere on our radars grin
  • illiniman14 did not even pick Serena to win the title, but his pick of Kerber to reach the final and for Dominika Cibulkova to make it to the quarters paid off, and he takes home this year's title in the women's section (he had a bronze last year). George95 was the other player to keep faith in Cibulkova, and Cibulkova's run lands him the silver for this year. Dizart pipped ElfTwinkle for the bronze by a single point after picking Kerber to reach the finals (Elf had Simona Halep making it to the last 8).
  • gtho4 takes home the spoon after firing quite a few blanks. Will there be bigger surprises awaiting us in the men's section? Keep watching this space wink

  • The last time that Novak Djokovic LOST before the last 8 of a grand slam tournament was in 2009 at the Roland Garros. Since then, he went 28 grand slams with a showing of quarters or better, had won the last 4 Slams, and the question people everywhere were asking coming into Wimbledon, was not whether Djokovic would win, but who he would be facing in the finals! So when a certain Sam Querrey blasted his way past Djokovic in the 3rd round, it not only had a seismic impact on the world in terms of shock and awe, but the result also suddenly energized a whole bunch of players into believing that they could win too!
  • We some some great and terrific tennis after that and the results knocked the stuffing out of our comp in a big way! Roger Federer won a terrific 5-setter against Marin Cilic in the quarters, coming back from two sets down, Andy Murray and Tsonga played a fantastic match in the last 8 and Federer was at it again in the semis, this time against Milos Raonic (though he wasn't lucky this time around). Federer had never ever lost a semis at Wimbledon in his career before (7 wins, 3 runner-ups and 3 times lost in quarters, but never in semis). Raonic had never reached a slam final before smile
  • Look at the irony! We are talking about everybody except the winner here grin Andy Murray must have very happy when Djokovic lost and even more happier when he learnt he wouldn't have to face Federer either! After weathering the Tsonga storm, he breezed his way past a listless Berdych in the semis before handling Raonic's serves for a straight sets win and his second Wimbledon title....some small consolation for Britain in these troubled times smile
  • Tomas Berdych had been into the last 8 at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros this year, and yet, only 4 of us had faith in him doing it at Wimbledon, where he was a finalist a few years back! Berdych repaid the faith in him by helping 3 of them get on to our podium! gtho4 had Berdych reaching the semifinals and that helped him land the bronze this year. George95 picked Berdych to reach the last 8, but he also picked Tsonga and Cilic, and those picks helped him take home the silver, a feat he managed in the women's section as well! N-Bomb did not pick Cilic, but he had Tsonga in his side and he had Berdych making it to the semis, and this helps him take home the title by a slender 2 points. The rest of us were nowhere in the picture grin
  • Our winner from the women's section, illiniman14, travelled the other way and took home the spoon in the men's. He lost out to Howie72 on a tie-break score!....on a side note: I had picked a certain Lucas Pouille to make it to the quarters at Roland Garros....clearly, Pouille got this news late and he lost in the second round there. He made it to the last 8 at Wimbledon, just to rub it in for me....can I get all those points now please crazy
