3rd leg of FT Triple Crown

157th Melbourne Cup

This year's race is almost here. The scoring system for the Melbourne Cup comp is the same as the Grand National and Kentucky Derby compc earlier this month:

RULES
o The rules for this comp are simple, and are the same as last year and the year before.
o Pick 10 horses in the order you think they'll finish, 1st to 10th.
o Points: for any horse out of the 10 you've picked, which finishes in the first five places:
      1st : 10 pts
      2nd : 6 pts
      3rd : 3 pts
      4th : 2 pts
      5th : 1 pt
o The order of your picks will be used as a tiebreaker to separate any dead-heats or ties.
o If two players have identical picks x10, whoever posts first wins the tie-breaker.
DEADLINE
The race starts on Tuesday 7th November 2017 at 3:00pm local time. Tips close when
they jump. There's a count-down clock to the race start time in the post below this one.
The following few pages (of many out there) have details of the contenders and their form:At the moment there are 55 horses still in the running to qualify, after first acceptances. The field of 24 runners and their post positions (barrier draw) will be announced three days before the race at around 7:30pm local time on Sat 4th Nov:

First Nominations - Tuesday (Midday) 29th August
Late Nominations - Tuesday (Midday) 5th September
Handicaps Declared - Tuesday (Midday) 12th September
First Declarations - Tuesday (Midday) 10th October
Second Declarations - Monday (10am) 30th October
Final Declarations - Saturday (4.30pm) 4th November
The final field is announced at 6.30pm on Saturday evening with the barrier draw conducted at approximately 7.30pm.

Picks x10 can be posted at any time in this thread, even if the field of 24 hasn't been announced! Please note that there is no need to pick reserves. If your horse is scratched, so be it (we've got half the field covered with our 10 picks). However, as is the case with any tipping comp in here, you are free to edit your picks at any time before the deadline.

gtho4 is the defending titleholder. ElfTwinkle won silver on a countback from paper_aero.

https://www.punters.com.au/news/hartnell-remains-in-melbourne-cup-contention_163497

The 2017 Melbourne Cup is edging closer and with each passing week we're seeing new horses emerge as key contenders. The leading hope at this stage is none other than last year's Cup winner Almandin. His 2nd-up win at Flemington in September was simply breathtaking and he looks to have come back an even better horse. But the chances run a lot deeper than that with some high-class internationals making the journey out here, including Red Cardinal, Francis Of Assisi, Marmelo and more!

Melbourne Cup 2nd Acceptances were taken on Monday 30 October, which has seen the number of horses in contention cut from 55 to 36. It's made the Cup picture a lot clearer but we're still a fair way off knowing what the composition of the final field will be. And with so many key lead-up races still to be run we're likely to see the pecking order chop and change so make sure you pay close attention to the Melbourne Cup Order of Entry - it's the best guide there is on which 24 horses will comprise this year's Melbourne Cup field. Keep checking in here because we'll be adding to this list as more leading Cups contenders emerge from the pack.

      • Faith and begorrah! Irish horse, Rekindling, won from another Irish horse, Johannes Vermeer, with Max Dynamite making a trifecta for the Emerald Isle.
      • Seven tipsters, out of 11, tipped the winner, with ElfTwinkle and gtho4 both adding on the next three placegetters. These two had to armwrestle, and our Canadian lass won! N-Bomb finished a short half-head away in third.
      • Tiebreakers were needed for fourth, fifth and sixth as well.
      • Behind that bunch was a large gap to the rest of the field, some of whom are still just crossing the finishing line.
      • The Race That Stops a Nation will be back again next year- reserve your seat quickly. smile
