World Cricket - 2017-18: November 23, 2017 to March 30, 2018

This will be the 14th edition of World Cricket...

Nobody has ever retained their title in the 13 years this comp has been run! confused frown .... N-Bomb will start as the defending champion, hoping to break the jinx. paper_aero and srini701 were also on the last podium. Howie72 is on a 4-year spoonless streak, though he still has some way to go before challenging the 77 rounds (and over 5 years) of N-Bomb.

We will mostly have Australia, New Zealand, England, and South Africa in action this season, along with some matches of India, Pakistan, and West Indies. Only 14-15 rounds till the end of March, with more Test matches than ODIs this season.

You will as usual pick 5 players for Test matches and 6 (or more) for ODI series from the list of players I will provide and score as many points as the runs/wickets by your selected player. A carefully chosen Trump player can double your points and boost your scores considerably. If you are not a regular visitor to the forums here, you can still lodge a team at the beginning of a series and allow it to score for you till a new series comes about. The new "super-sub" rule will continue to allow you to score for any player who you may pick but doesn't play...

Most threads won't be up till a few days before a match/series and the comp may also involve some unannounced series and some big rounds in between (where 2 matches start on same/close by dates).

9 people each played the last 2 seasons (2016-17 and 2015-16), while 10 turned up for 2014-15. Hoping to better the participation numbers and to a good, fun competition...

  • Welcome Back to yet another edition of World Cricket! The same 9 from last season have lined up. No drop-outs, no newcomers, no returnees frown

  • After an absorbing first innings when both teams toe-to-toe, England collapsed in the second innings and Australia romped to an easy 10-wicket win in the Ashes opener at Brisbane. A sign of things to come over the next 4 Tests? We'll soon know....The "usual suspects" all fared well, meaning we all got off to good starts as well.

  • ElfTwinkle and gtho4 have blasted off the blocks with N-Bomb and paper_aero close behind. However, Howie72 decided the pressure of sustaining a spoonless streak was too much for him, so he decided to take one after more than 4 years. His streak ends at 60 (last spoon in round 2 of 2013-14), well short of the record 77 rounds of N-Bomb...

  • The next round involves 2 Tests, so do get your picks in before the Test starts in New Zealand. I am already confused enough with time zones, so please check how many days/hours New Zealand is ahead of FT time grin

It's 19 hours difference this time of year between FT time and NZ time...so take FT time and subtract five hours (but remember to add a day), so at the time of this post, it is 3:10am in Auckland.

2017-18 season at a glance:

15 rounds from November 22, 2017 to March 30, 2018

4 rounds of multi-ODI matches (New Zealand features twice); 11 rounds of Test matches

Of the 11 Test matches, 5 rounds feature double header Test matches, 6 involve single Tests

In 15 rounds, we are heavily focused on Australia (10 rounds), England (9 rounds) and South Africa (8 rounds). Other teams this season are New Zealand (6 rounds), India (3 rounds), West Indies (2 rounds), Zimbabwe and Pakistan (1 round each). That's 8 of the 10 current Test nations. No Sri Lanka or Bangladesh this season in our comp.

Tip: Invest on Australian and England players' form and on double-header Tests grin grin

  • A Hearty WELCOME to LeoDaVinci, who is returning to this comp after many years smile Hoping he will last the course and not vanish after a few rounds tongue

  • The second Ashes Test sparked to life on days 3 and 4 when England fought back after conceding a massive lead and also when their captain led a spirited chase. However it was always a bridge too far and Australia duly won by 120 runs to go 2-0 up. Will England be whitewashed? Incidentally the batting heros for Australia were NOT their captain and vice-captain but the 8 times recalled Shaun Marsh and the returning wicket keeper Tim Paine!

  • The other Test at Wellington was blown open on day 1 by the New Zealand fast bowler Neil Wagner (picked only by srini701here) and the West Indians were never really in it despite a spirited show for sometime in their second innings. 8 of the 10 of us had the Kiwi skipper as our "Trump" player and he duly flopped most miserably grin Howie72 and ozzz2002 were the only ones who were wise in this match smilee

  • ozzz2002 rode on some valuable points scored by BOTH his supersubs to take the round's honours and move up the table....gtho4 as his wont in this comp, continued his Ashes team from the last round but it didnt pay off and he takes his first spoon for the season. LeoDaVinci picked up a decent score but starts at the bottom as he couldn't beat last round's spooner Howie72.

Supersubs scoring this round: Plenty....gtho4 had Ambris scoring in place of Bishoo (no great difference), paper_aero had Shannon Gabriel scoring in place of Southee (no great difference), wwe84 had Roston Chase scoring in place of Alzarri Joseph (no great difference) and ozzz2002 had BOTH his supersubs scoring - Keiren Powell and Stuart Broad instead of Southee and Gary Ballance (decent scores from both).

  • A BIG THANKS to gtho4 for the new look scoring from this round smile ....Unfortunately that help couldn't stop him from getting a second spoon on the trot....with his habit of posting a single team for the entire series, he's always in danger of players missing out (despite one supersub scoring for him), or a player in bad form continuing to pull him down frown

  • srini701 takes the round's honours and moves up to second place behind paper_aero. N-Bomb and ElfTwinkle are also perched at the top, with an extremely tight and close middle order smile

  • New Zealand duly finished a 2-0 thrashing of the West Indies with their bowlers doing all the damage. Ross Taylor joined the late Martin Crowe and his captain Kane Williamson on 17 Test centuries, the most for a New Zealander in Tests.

Supersubs scoring this round: Sunil Ambris (virtually nothing after a second successive hit wicket in Test cricket shocked ) for gtho4, but George had 2 players missing the match...

The next round is the Perth Test between England and Australia starting this Thursday...please get your teams in before the toss or let your second Test team score for you.

  • Australia sealed yet another Ashes triumph at home, winning the final Test to be played at WACA by an innings margin....after allowing England to score over 400 in their first innings grin .... This England team is not as bad as it suddenly seems nor is the Australian team as great as it appears. It just seems to be a phase where every team is good in their backyard and struggle the minute they step out. England have now lost the last 7 Tests they played abroad....

  • Steve Smith continued to torment the Englishmen (and a few of us here) with a massive double century to lead the rout. DJ Malan was the other batsman who shone in the match (none of us picked him here). Hazlewood bowled well, but none of the English bowlers did.

  • Howie72 and gtho4 had Steve Smith for their "double" and they are naturally the round's heros here. ozzz2002, ElfTwinkle and srini701 had David Warner as their "double" and they all sank along with Warner mad (srini at least had Mitchell Marsh scoring a few more for him). LeoDaVinci lodged his picks a couple of hours after the match started (what's 2 hours in the context of a 5-day game?) and so his "double" pick didnt count, but it didnt harm him much as Moeen Ali had an average match too.

  • Other than illiniman14, not one of us stayed in their position from the last round...a familiar name is back at the top, and Howie made a massive jump up, but this promises to be a lot more topsy-turvy season than ever before.

Supersubs scoring this round: Stuart Broad for ozzz2002, but unfortunately, he didn't amount to much this time.

The next round is the Boxing Day Tests in Melbourne and Port Elizabeth, so please get your teams in well before the Toss in Melbourne.

  • Zimbabwe were an apology of a Test team and folded in less than 2 days against South Africa...good thing we are having them for only one round this season...plenty of our picks didn't even get to play! In Australia, Alistair Cook finally found his form and hit the highest ever score by an opener carrying his bat through the innings, but the MCG pitch was so poor, Australia easily got away with a draw, with Smith continuing to pile on the runs.

  • paper_aero won his first HoF for the season to narrow down N-Bomb's lead at the top....there's virtually NOTHING between these 2 at the moment. ElfTwinkle scored a 100 points more than srini701 to catch up with him. illiniman14 had a good round too, and he, Howie72 and wwe84 are all bunched up together. ozzz2002 defaulted the round and he slips to the bottom, with LeoDaVinci having a decent round there.

Supersubs scoring this round: Plenty. But only paper_aero was laughing away at his supersub pick (David Warner)...

The next round starts Thursday January 4 with the final Ashes Test. India and South Africa square off a day later. We will NOT pick the 2nd Test between these 2 countries but will pick the 3rd Test again. Two rounds of ODI series coming up in quick succession, so please do watch out and lodge your picks in time.

Will switch back to gtho4 style of scoring from next round...

  • England folded meekly in the 5th Test as well (for a change Steve Smith did NOT score a century, though 3 other Aussie players did). 4-0 seems big but England is not a bad team...and neither is this Australian team a great one...I still feel this last decade, teams are all good only on their home grounds and are all poor travellers...

  • A point reinforced by the other Test of this round. South Africa and India did play a cracker of a Test match with fortunes swinging wildly every session, but at the end of the match, it was the home team that was smiling. South Africa are 1-0 up and India's run of 9 series wins (7 at home and 1 each in Sri Lanka and West Indies) should be over by the time the second Test is done....

  • There were some great performances in both Tests and we had some good scores, though for a change, most of our "double" picks (Smith, Starc, Warner, Kohli, Ashwin and de Villiers) had average matches in both Tests. N-Bomb pulled a little ahead of paper_aero with his first HoF for the season (still nothing between these 2 despite that show). The first 4 retained their positions but the remaining 6 all played musical chairs, with Leo skipping this round to go down.

Supersubs scoring this round: None in the Ashes Test, but at least 4 in the other Test, all at least getting some decent scores smile

The next round has started today (9 January) with last 4 ODIs between New Zealand and Pakistan. We will skip the second Test between South Africa and India (it clashes with the 5-match ODI series between England and Australia, which is our round 8.....teams have been posted for this so please make sure you pick your teams on time.

  • Pakistan was no match for a red-hot New Zealand and went down 0-5 in the series. Should be great fun watching the New Zealanders take on an equally hot England next!

  • We are scoring only the last 4 ODIs here, so if many of you picked your "double" player or Pakistan players based on the first ODI scores, I am sorry, those scores were not included here. We still did well, with all our "double" players fetching us bucketful of points. Ozzz2002 was the best of the lot, as Guptill ensured him a second HoF for the season.

  • Other than srini701 in 3rd place and LeoDaVinci in the cellar (he defaulted the round, so lost a chance to move up), every one of us played musical chairs this round and paper_aero finds himself back in the lead.

Supersubs scoring this round: None. We all managed 6 players each who featured in at least 1 match of the series!

The next round for picks will be the 3rd Test between India and South Africa that starts on Wednesday January 24. You can have your team from the first Test score if you do not want to lodge a team. Leo has no team so he has to lodge some picks smile

  • England finally were better than Australia, thrashing them 4-1. It didn't help the Australians that both Steve Smith and David Warner struggled for runs (didn't help us here either as most of us had them as our "double" players frown )

  • Some more musical chairs here with the top 7 all switching places. srini701 takes the round's honours and moves past paper_aero, who is down to number 3 now with N-Bomb back on top.

  • Howie72 takes a second spoon with both Eoin Morgan and Liam Plunkett having an average series

Supersubs scoring this round: None. We all managed 6 players each who featured in at least 1 match of the series!

The next round is already done as well---3rd Test between India and South Africa. The next round to pick is the 6 match ODI series between India and South Africa that starts February 1.

  • South Africa wanted to pay India back in their own coin...they were drubbed 0-3 when they last came to India, and so got the fastest possible pitch prepared for the final Test as well after winning the first two Tests. Unfortunately for them, this Indian team was more steely and seething with anger over everybody after their series loss, and put in a more determined performance on a deadly pitch (eventually rated "poor" by the ICC). It did turn out to be a superb series eventually won by the home team again. There's just no "dominant" team that can play (and win) well abroad in the world today. India probably took that one step ahead of the rest. We'll know more when Australia visit South Africa later in February-April for a 4-Test series.

  • Many of us had AB De Villiers to score double for us, but it backfired. Those picking Amla or Kohli as their trumps were better off (illiniman14 probably had it best this round...his supersub turned out to be his trump player and he had a great Test).

  • The musical chairs at the top continued. paper_aero switched places with N-Bomb and is back in the lead, while srini701 managed to stay in his new second spot. LeoDaVinci wins his first HoF for the season and leaps up two places, leaving wwe84 in the cellar for the first time this season...gtho4 takes his second spoon of the season.

Supersubs scoring this round: Plenty. And some real good too...Bhuvaneswar (143) scored for ElfTwinkle; Dean Elgar (90) scored for gtho4; Shami (310) scored for illiniman14; Pandya (14) flopped for N-Bomb; Philander (145) scored for LeoDaVinci.

The next round has already started---ODIs between India and South Africa. A small break now and the next round to pick will be the 5 match ODI series between New Zealand and England that starts February 25.

  • After an engrossing Test series, it turned out to be a gross mismatch in the 6 match ODI series. It didn't help the poor hosts that they lost key players to injuries at various stages of the series (it was mostly batsmen who were injured so at best they would probably have added a few more runs that's all grin The Indian captain Virat Kohli was in monstrous, world-record beating form, so the end result of 5-1 would probably have happened no matter who played for the South Africans!

  • The two Indian wrist spinners, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, ran circles around the hosts, bamboozling them every match. Between them they picked up a whopping 32 wickets in 6 matches! Kohli became the first person to score over 500 runs in a bilateral series of 5 matches or more, and Shikhar Dhawan gave him able support scoring 300+ runs as well. For the hosts, their captain Du Plessis injured himself after match 1, De Kock was injured after match 2, and De Villiers played only the last 3 matches, where he was a shadow of himself.

  • Those of us picking Kohli as our double for the series went away with bucketful of points. gtho4 and ozzz2002 were the only 2 here to see value in one of the Indian spinners (by choice or accident, is left to them to answer ;)). gtho4 also managed to pick Dhawan...now, if only he had Kohli as his double, he would have killed this round!

  • But it was not to be, so paper_aero and wwe84 repeat their round 5 "double act" after exactly another 5 rounds...we are now neatly divided into 2 groups. The top 5 can chase the podium spots over the remaining rounds and the bottom 5 can fight for everything else smile

Supersubs scoring this round: Shreyas Iyer (gtho4), Du Plessis (ozzz2002) and Hashim Amla (illiniman14).

The next round will be the 5 match ODI series between New Zealand and England that starts February 25. Another potentially high-scoring round that could possibly change a few things around? We'll see....

  • Scoring round 12 first as the Test match is over and the last ODI of round 11 is still 3 days away smile Australia duly thumped South Africa to take a 1-0 lead in the 4 Test series. Starc was the stand out performer in the Test (South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj had a good Test too) and somehow it never looked like the hosts were challenging the Aussies!

  • wwe84 finally gets a HoF and pushed Leo into the cellar. N-Bomb and srini701 again exchanged positions as we otherwise maintained status quo.

    Supersubs scoring this round: NONE.

The next of round will be the 5 match ODI series between New Zealand and England. The next round to pick is the 2nd Test between South Africa and Australia as we enter the home stretch of the season. The last 2 rounds include the 3rd and 4th Tests between these 2 teams, and the 2-Test series between New Zealand and England (same dates)

  • As expected it was a mighty close and thrilling series, with England just edging it 3-2. There were some superb batting performances from Ross Taylor, Williamson, Root and Bairstow and brilliant bowling from Ish Sodhi and Woakes throughout the series. England is making some serious noise in the white ball cricket with the 2019 World Cup as their sole aim.

  • LeoDaVinci wins his second HoF here but this season is turning out to be the closest we had in many years. Any of the top 3 can win this, and ElfTwinkle in 4th place still has an outside chance of landing on the podium! It will all boil down to the very last 2 rounds which are both double-headers smile

Supersubs scoring this round: One. Jason Roy in place of Matt Henry for gtho4.

The next round will be scored shortly (2nd Test between Australia and South Africa). The last 2 rounds of our season start Thursday March 22 and Friday March 30.

  • The South Africans bounced back against the Australians in style. De Villiers hammered a beautiful hundred and Rabada was on fire the whole match....a 4th 10-wicket haul for the youngster (he's only 22 years!) means Australia has plenty to think about in the 8 day break before the 3rd Test. Unfortunately, Rabada has been suspended for the last 2 Tests and may no longer torment the visitors...

  • wwe84 made it back-to-back HoFs, riding on the Rabada bandwagon...Rabada won wwe more points than many of of our total scores! LeoDaVinci takes home his first spoon and is back in the basement. Musical chairs at the top again with srini701 replacing N-Bomb behind paper_aero. As long as these 3 do not replicate teams, it promises to be a thrilling dash to the finish over the last 2 rounds grin

    Supersubs scoring this round: None.

The last 2 rounds have been posted. The 14th round starts March 22, so please get your teams in before that.

  • England's sensational collapse on day 1 of their Test against New Zealand was completely overshadowed by events in South Africa over the last week. For the record, Australia went on to lose the Test, but they probably lost a lot more than that as the ball-tampering issue came up. A whole nation is outraged and we probably haven't heard the last of this sordid drama yet. From a potential all-time great, Steve Smith suddenly finds himself labelled with the dreaded "C" word in sport. A one-Test ban for now, but Cricket Australia could possibly ban him for life! David Warner has been asked to step down too, and he will also probably not play the final Test.

  • England hoped the rains would save them aftey got themselves shot out by the 2 New Zealand opening bowlers in 20 overs for 58 on the 1st Day....They nearly pulled off a draw thanks to rain, but in the end, New Zealand rightly won a good, quiet Test and England's miserable away form continues....

  • srini701 takes the top spot for the round and also moves to the top of the ladder for the first time with just a round left in the season. There's not even a 100 points separating the top 3 and it's anybody's comp to win now.

    Supersubs scoring this round: None.

The last round starts Friday, but the Australian team is in total disarray and its not clear who will play or not. If something clear does not emerge with 48 hours left for the Test, I will probably drop the Test from our last round schedule...what do you all say?? Please voice some thoughts.

I agree with you, Srini. The way things are going, the Australian team could potentially lose half their players! The whole incident is totally wrong, and I (and many of my countrymen) are ashamed and disgusted.

I think it would be difficult for us to pick our team for a match if it isn't clear who is (& isn't) going to be playing -- theoretically, we could end up having 1/2 our team for that particular match not playing.

Noting that our comp is being so closely contested for the podium, I think it would be logical (under the circumstances) to drop the controversial match and tip only the New Zealand vs England match.

Having said the above, I am fully behind whatever decision you eventually make regarding the South Africa vs Australia match.
