¯\_(ツ)_/¯

After a round where we as a group averaged fewer than 1.5 picks correct per tipper, things look a little bleak on the leaderboard. The previous lowest-scoring FT March Madness comp was 2006, where George Mason made the Final Four and threw the brackets into chaos. This year, after 2 rounds, the tipper with the highest MPP is N-Bomb with 224, and that’s only assuming he gets every single pick the rest of the way, in a tournament where a 16 seed beat a 1 and two 11 seeds are in the Sweet 16. George95 is the only tipper remaining with an intact championship game.

Five tippers are still in the running for gold, which is not out of the ordinary (last year 6 were still in the running after 2 rounds, and 4 were still alive in 2016). The leader gtho4 and last year’s champion N-Bomb are the top 2 picks, with easily the highest MPP. The 7-point lead could be expanded if Michigan wins in the next round or Kansas goes to the Final Four. If those happen, gtho4 has won it all. N-Bomb could make up those 7 points if Villanova wins it all, and could offset the Michigan win if Duke goes to the Final Four.

Howie72 is down 11 points to gtho4, and assuming gtho4 misses every other pick, Howie72 could make up that ground if Michigan goes to the Final Four and Texas Tech wins their next game. If he misses one of those picks, Villanova goes to the championship game, Gonzaga wins their next game, or Kansas goes to the Final Four, then gtho4 (and likely N-Bomb) will be above Howie72 in the standings.

ozzz2002 is down by 12 points, but can overcome that deficit a multitude of ways, especially if Kansas ends up winning it all. In fact, even if Texas A&M and West Virginia win their next games, 18 points will be made up to help fight off any games gtho4 or N-Bomb might gain in the meantime.

The only other tipper still in the running is currently in 8th place – themonarch. If Kentucky goes to the championship game, then themonarch would make up 28 points while currently down 27. themonarch does not have a live pick in the West or East bracket, so would need West Virginia, Texas Tech, Syracuse, Florida State, and Texas A&M to all win their next games, and one way or another not have Kansas go to the Final Four. And given what’s happened so far in this tournament, why not?

srini701 is only down 11 points, but can only gain ground if Duke wins their next game, which will only net 5 points. toocool4u, down by 20 points, can make up 19 if Duke goes to the championship game. ElfTwinkle, down 21 points, can make up 15 points. George95, with his championship game intact, is down 29 points and can make up 26 if that championship game goes as predicted. Past that in the standings, the gap is simply too big to make up.

2 Purdue opened the day against 10 Butler, and things seemed to be in hand with 4 minutes left, going up 73-65. Butler closed the gap to 73-71, but Purdue held them off in the closing seconds to win 76-73. 3 Michigan State found themselves in a dogfight against 11 Syracuse, and even though the Spartans led most of the second half, Syracuse took the lead with 4:23 left and never relinquished it, winning 55-53 in the upset.

It was a fairly terrible day for the city of Cincinnati. The only 1 seed to play on Sunday was 1 Xavier against 9 Florida State, and they seemed to be pulling away in the second half up 46-35 and later 58-46 with under 10 minutes left. Florida State kept chipping away at the lead, and their defense held Xavier to only 5 points in the last 6:11 of the game. Florida State used that advantage to go up and win 75-70. This happened after 2 Cincinnati found their own heartbreak. Up 63-42 with just under 12 minutes left, the Bearcats looked to be waltzing into the Sweet 16. But 7 Nevada turned up their defense and went on a 13-0 run, and did not let Cincinnati score a basket (they made 2 free throws) in the last 5:47 of the game, allowing Nevada to win 75-73.

16 UMBC couldn’t match their miracle performance in the first round and fell to 9 Kansas State 50-43. 5 Clemson clobbered 4 Auburn 84-53. 7 Texas A&M stomped last year’s champion 2 North Carolina 86-65. 5 West Virginia took the win in the intrastate matchup with 13 Marshall 94-71.

We as a group came in with 17 live picks on the first day of the Sweet 16, and we only managed 6 correct picks among the possible 60. Because of this, there wasn’t much movement on the leaderboard. Howie72 does move into second over N-Bomb, and gtho4 has a 9-point lead now in first. themonarch is now out of the running, having lost Kentucky. Howie72 still has hope thanks to Michigan’s win, since in order to have any chance to win, they need to go to the Final Four.

The day started with 11 Loyola (IL) facing off against 7 Nevada. Nevada started strong, going up 20-8, but once up 24-16 their offense stalled with 7:57 remaining as they went scoreless the rest of the half, allowing Loyola (IL) to go up 28-24. That lead expanded to 40-28 early in the second half, which stayed around 8-10 points for most of the half. Up 57-47, Loyola (IL) had their own offense stall, and Nevada closed the gap to tie the game at 59. However, Nevada was never able to actually take the lead, and the Ramblers kept holding them off until hitting a 3-pointer to basically ice the game, going up 69-65 with 6 seconds left, winning 69-68.

The second game of the day was 3 Michigan pounding 7 Texas A&M 99-72. The game was never close.

The South region continued to amaze with 9 Kansas State and 5 Kentucky. The Wildcats went up 13-1 early in the game, but the Wildcats came back to 15-13 a few minutes later. The game remained close until it was tied at 38 in the second half, when Kansas State went on a 9-point run to go up 47-38. They maintained the lead for several minutes until when up 52-45, and Kentucky came back to take the lead 55-54. In the closing minutes, they volleyed the lead back and forth until tied at 58 with 1:14 left. Kansas State ran a play, missed, and got their own rebound, before finally hitting a layup with 18 seconds left. Kentucky missed their next shot, and a free throw made it 61-58. A last-second 3-pointer also went wanting, and Kansas State moved on to the Elite 8.

The West region continued to disappoint as 9 Florida State played 4 Gonzaga. Florida State went up 16-6 after the first 6 minutes, and though Gonzaga tied it up at 23, Florida State bounced back out to a 41-32 halftime lead. Throughout the entire second half, the lead never dwindled below 4, and Florida State won 75-60.

Not too much of note happened towards the top of the leaderboard after the sane side of the bracket played on Friday. Howie72 inched closer to gtho4, still alive as Texas Tech wins. Howie now needs Michigan to win their next game against Florida State tomorrow, as well as for both Villanova to lose in the next 2 rounds and Kansas to lose to Duke.

N-Bomb is also still alive, needing Villanova to win it all and for Duke to beat Kansas to come home with the gold. ozzz2002 is now out of the running, down 22 with only the possibility of making up 17 points on gtho4.

The games themselves were fairly pedestrian. 1 Kansas beat up on 5 Clemson early and often, until the very end of the game when Clemson tried to stage a comeback. While the final score of 80-76 might indicate it was a close game, there was really threat for them to win the game. 1 Villanova was tested by 5 West Virginia for most of the game, but West Virginia stalled up 60-54 and Villanova went on an 11-0 run, which would expand up to 73-64, and later 78-68, until they finally won 90-78.

2 Duke and 11 Syracuse played the best game of the day. The conference rivals played virtually even the first 25 minutes, but Duke started to pull away going up 48-40 on a 10-3 run. Syracuse would fight back to within 3 points a few times the rest of the game, notably at 67-64 with 17 seconds left. Down 3 and with the ball, Syracuse was fouled to keep them from shooting a potential game-tying 3 pointer, and made 1 of the 2 free throws. Up 67-65, Duke hit their remaining free throws and won 69-65.

2 Purdue and 3 Texas Tech finished out the night. Though Texas Tech had the lead the majority of the game, they were still separated by only 1 point with 18:41 left in the second half. After getting the lead down to 2 again at 41-39 13:58 left, Purdue hit offensive struggles, and found themselves down 50-41. In their last gasp for hope, Purdue fought back to within 3 at 58-55 with 5:46 left, but that was all they had in them. Texas Tech pulled away yet again and won by the final score of 78-65.

The three games of the Final Four are left, and while 4 teams can still win it all, that is not the case here. With Kansas’s win over Duke, gtho4 has a now-insurmountable lead and will win his first March Madness comp. gtho4 first finished on the podium in 2004 in third place, and the only other appearance was in 2015, also in third. This year, gtho4 will come home the champion for the first time, becoming the 16th different champion in 17 years. Congratulations!

The strangest bracket in tournament history finished out in style, as the South region was won by 11 Loyola (IL). 9 Kansas State was never really even in the game, as they fell behind 19-7 early. The Ramblers maintained a solid lead for the first half, going into halftime up 12. That lead went up to 45-29 early in the second half, and slowly worked out to 54-33. By that point, it was all Loyola (IL) and they danced into the Final Four 78-62.

3 Michigan got up early 10-4 on 9 Florida State, but that would be the biggest lead of the first half as they went to halftime up only 27-26. The Wolverines got up 38-28 early in the second half, and though the lead got down to 3 a couple times, maintained a solid lead into the waning seconds. Florida State finally got it down to 2 with 24 seconds left, but free throws put it out of reach and Michigan won 58-54.

1 Villanova has been the top team remaining since the second round, and they had no problem dispatching 3 Texas Tech. The Red Raiders got up 9-1 early, but then it was all Villanova. The Wildcats were soon up 23-17, and 36-23 at halftime. The lead got down to 5 points twice in the second half, but Villanova pulled away and won 71-59.

1 Kansas and 2 Duke played the best game of the round, going to overtime to settle the Midwest region championship. The largest lead either team had in the first half was a 4-point lead held by Duke at 3 different times. The Blue Devils held the lead 36-33 at halftime. Kansas finally made their run in the second half, going up 46-39 early, but it was eventually tied back up at 57 with just under 10 minutes left. Kansas went back up 5 at 62-57, but Duke made a run to go up 64-62. Duke was up 72-69 with under a minute left when Kansas hit a game-tying 3 with 27 seconds left. On their last possession, a Duke jumper went wanting and the game went to overtime. In the extra 5 minutes, Kansas made their way up 81-78, and Duke went cold. More free throws put the Jayhawks up 85-78, though a last second 3 made the final score 85-81.

Another year in the books, and it is gtho4 who comes home with the victory, for the first time ever. Congratulations! gtho4 is followed by last year’s champion N-Bomb and George95, who made a spectacular leap up into the podium by being the only tipper to predict the championship game result correctly.

Due to the upsets in the bracket, this year was the lowest-scoring comp since the rule changes in 2004 to the current scoring. The only times one tipper scored over 200 points were in 2006 when Blinkybill scored 205 points and in 2011 when N-Bomb won his first championship with 210 points. gtho4 just scraped over that mark with 201 this year, with several tippers banging on the door to that threshold.

3 Michigan struggled early on against the Cinderella 11 Loyola (IL), as they were down 29-22 at halftime. In fact, the Ramblers were up 43-34 with 12:14 left in the game, when finally a Michigan run would put the game away. The game was tied at 47 within 6 minutes, and with 2 minutes left Michigan had a comfortable 10-point lead, eventually winning 69-57.

1 Villanova started fast against 1 Kansas and never looked back. After 7 minutes, the score was 22-4. Villanova’s first half lead never got under 11 after that point, and the halftime 14-point lead was never cut in to in the second half, allowing the Wildcats to waltz into the championship game 95-79.

From there, Michigan did everything they could to take the lead early, going up 21-14, but the Wildcats would not be contained. They went on a 9-0 run, going up 23-21, and held the lead 37-28 at halftime. Villanova would not be denied in the second half either, going up 51-33 after just over 5 minutes into the half, after which the lead never dwindled to less than 13 points, meaning Villanova are our national champions for the second time in 3 years.

phew, I'm glad that's over; I never thought I'd live to see the day. I thought I'd die of old age before it happened; sort of like waiting for Leeds United to get promoted.

Congrats to the fellow medallists, and many thanks to illiniman14 for putting this together and running the comp!
