Australian Football League
AFL
2018 Tipping Competition

Aussie Rules, Australia's unique brand of football, will be kicking off on Thu 22nd March. The rule for this year's comp are the same as previous years, viz.

    • One point a correct pick, nothing for a loss.
    • Default if you forget to pick is the wooden spoon score.
    • Perfect picks score a bonus point.
    • If needed, end-of-season tiebreaker for the podium spots will be HoF v Spoons. Largest
differential wins or, if the differential is equal, most weekly HoF wins. If that's identical
      then most bonus points wins.
    • Deadline will be start of the first game each weekend - usually a Friday night at 7:50pm,
with the occasional Thursday night game.

This will be the 18th edition of the AFL tipping comp:

  • Welcome to the 2018 AFL tipping competition where we have 15 runners in the field, one more than last year. We welcome Daaanieeel and LeoDaVinci for the 2018 competition while illiniman14 is a no show. Can our resident Indian AFL expert, srini701, repeat his victory from last year? Will srini start an Indian AFL league if he can win again? Can any of the other 13 stop him or will Australian football overtake cricket in popularity? All will be answered in the future.
  • George95 missed the Richmond vs Carlton match with late tips, lodged after the game had finished.
  • Richmond started the defense of their title sluggishly as injury-hit Carlton threatened to spoil their party but the Tigers slowly worked their way into the contest and emerged victorious for their 5th opening day win in a row. Essendon had lost their last 4 games against Adelaide by an average of 76 points so of course, the Bombers came from nowhere in the final quarter to stun the Crows and win by 12. St Kilda got their season off to a winning start by beating Brisbane at home but the Lions, winners of the wooden spoon last year, can look forward to a much improved season if they carry on playing like this. Port Adelaide recruited well in the off-season and it showed immediate dividends as they thumped Fremantle by 50 points. Gold Coast's opener against North Melbourne was played in Cairns due, I assume, to the Commonwealth Games just around the corner but it was North Melbourne that coped with the puddles best to begin with. However Gold Coast pulled away in the final quarter to win in a low scoring match. Collingwood had no answer to Hawthorn as the Hawks lead at every break for a comfortable 34 point win. Greater Western Sydney pummelled the 2016 Premiers, Western Bulldogs, by 82 points, the dismal Dogs needing to significantly improve or it could be a long season. Geelong score 80 points in the first half against Melbourne but in the seond half were restricted to just 17 points in the second half, they held on in the end to triumph by a mere 3 points. West Coast's Optus Stadium's opening celebrations were curtailed by Sydney as the Swans travelled west and returned with a hard earned 29 point win.
  • The FunTrivia AFL competition started promisingly with a good showing in the first game as no one got it wrong but it did not last when Essendon beat Adelaide. We ended up going 97/134 for an impressive 72.38% strike rate. Our defending champion sits handily in a tie for second.
  • The first 7 games were all won by the home team but it did not last as away teams got revenge in the final 2 games. We all picked Richmond and St Kilda to win. The hardest game to tip was Essendon's upset win over Adelaide with just 3 correct tips.
  • Two weekly winners to start the season as both Dizart and Howie72 went 8/9 while wwe84, Sypher, ElfTwinkle all took home a spoon with 4/9 and George95 joined them with 4/8.
  • Not surprisingly after their weekly wins, Dizart and Howie72 enjoy a 1 point lead at the top over a group of 7. A group of 4 find themselves at the bottom, 3 points off the lead after 1 round.

  • LeoDaVinci was running on default fuel.
  • It was a replay of the 2017 Grand Final and the omens pointed to the rematch going the same way as the final with Richmond coming out on top but it was not to be as an undermanned Adelaide lead at every break to run away 36 point winners. After a very poor first half from both North Melbourne and St Kilda where only 4 goals were kicked between the two sides and the scores were tied, it was the Kangaroos that come out strong and outclassed St Kilda to win easily by 52 points. For only the second time in Gold Coast Suns history they start the season with 2 consecutive wins while Carlton lose both of their opening games for the sixth year in a row. For only the second time in their history Greater Western Sydney has won at the MCG but it was a hardfought victory after Collingwood came from 17 points down in the second quarter to take an 11 point lead in the final quarter before fading. Melbourne survived a huge scare after Brisbane came from 42 points down to tie it up with 20 minutes to go but they could do no more as the Demons once again pulled away to win by 26 points. Fremantle christened their new home with a win over Essendon, the Bombers could not repeat their first round comeback, the Dockers breaking the 100 point mark for the first time in 17 games with the last time also being against Essendon. Despite a close first quarter the Western Bulldogs were no match for the visiting West Coast Eagles as they went down to easily by 51 points, the Eagles blowing the game open with a 6 goal to 0 second quarter. For the second year in a row Port Adelaide stunned the Sydney Swans at the SCG after dominating the second half to come from behind. It was a thriller between Geelong and Hawthorn as the Cats made 3 comebacks with the last of them tying the match up at 117 all with 4 minutes to go but the Hawks had the final say with a behind 2 minutes later which proved to be the last score of the game.
  • After a good showing in the first round we crashed back to earth in round 2 as we went 50/126 for a 39.68% strike rate. There were no perfect games and one game which no one got correct, being North Melbourne's win at home over St Kilda.
  • We had another two weekly winners as both Sypher and ElfTwinkle went 5/9 while N-Bomb took home the spoon with 2/9.
  • Howie72 takes an early 1 point lead over Dizart, Daaanieeel and chogobad. George 95 takes over the bottom rung though is only a point behind a group of 4.

  • We had a full house this week.
  • Carlton's woes continued despite outscoring Collingwood in the 3rd and 4th quarters, a big Collingwood 2nd quarter taking them to a big enough lead for their 1st win of the season. Port Adelaide continued their perfect start to the season but only after surviving a massive comeback from Brisbane that, unfortunately for the visitors, fell just short. The Roo-doo has come to an end as Melbourne beat North Melbourne after 17 successive losses, it did not look good early on but a strong final quarter saw them pull away from the Kangaroos. Fremantle bought the 'away' game from Gold Coast and it paid off as they accounted for the Suns in their new stadium, running away in the final quarter. Sydney lead at each quarter to defeat Greater Western Sydney in a tough derby match with the lead changing a number of times. After a close first two quarters Adelaide piled on the pressure against St Kilda and it told as they raced away to a 49 point win to make it 9 in a row against the Saints. Richmond truimphed over the unbeaten Hawthorn in another hardfought match that brings the Tigers premiership defence back on track after last week's loss, having lead from start to finish and withstanding a Hawks comeback attempt in the final quarter. Despite inaccuracies at times Western Bulldogs got their season underway as they outplayed a disappointing Essendon, taking the heat off them for now and piling it on the Bombers. A rebuilding West Coast showed they will be a force to reckon with as they stormed home against Geelong after letting slip a good lead, kicking the last 6 goals to win by 15 points.
  • It was a reasonable round as we went 89/135 for a 65.92% strike rate, we will continue our Jeckyl and Hyde performance in round 4? There was one perfect game as we all tipped Adelaide to beat St Kilda. The hardest game to tip was Western Bulldog's win at home to Essendon which was successful for just wwe84 and ElfTwinkle.
  • The awards were plentiful as 5 earned the weekly win with 7/9 being paper_aero, LeoDaVinci, Dizart, N-Bomb and ElfTwinkle. Even more took home a wooden spoon as wwe84, Sypher, gtho4, chogobad, ozzz2002 and ASA all went 5/9.
  • Dizart's weekly win draws him level with Howie72 agaain and they are 1 point clear of Daaanieeel, paper_aero and ElfTwinkle. George 95 catches up with ozzz2002 and wwe84 at the bottom.

  • We had a full house this week.
  • Last year Adelaide came from a huge deficit to draw with Collingwood, this year they were trailing by 52 points in the third quarter at home and then kicked 4 goals in a row but that was to be it as the Magpies regrouped and ran out convicing winners, their first win over the Crows since 2013. Greater Western Sydney played Fremantle in Canberra and despite being below par they were still good enough to beat Fremantle after the Dockers had taken a surprising first quarter lead. It was a horror day for Brisbane against Richmond at the MCG as they kicked just 2 goals and were restricted to 17 points in a 93 point thrashing. It was much closer between Western Bulldogs and Sydney as the Swans came back from a half-time deficit to overcome the Bulldogs despite the Bulldogs making it interesting late by drawing level. It was almost all one-way traffic for North Melbourne at home to Carlton, the Blues lead briefly early before succumbing to a heavy 86 point loss. A big second quarter set West Coast up for a huge win over visiting Gold Coast, their new home quickly becoming a fortress. Essendon bounced back from being easy-beats to become giant killers as they stunned Port Adelaide at home. Melbourne kicked 5 goals in the first quarter at a wet MCG but could only manage one more in the final three quarters as they slipped to a big defeat. It was just as bad for St Kilda as they never lead in going down by 47 points at Geelong.
  • It was a good round as we went 96/135 for a 71.11% strike rate, slightly better than round 3. There were 3 perfect game as we all tipped the Giants, Eagles and Cats to win but no one gave the Magpies a chance to beat the Crows in the battle of the birds.
  • Once again weekly winners were plentiful as wwe84, Daaanieeel, Sypher, Howie72, srini, N-Bomb and ASA all went 7/9. ElfTwinkle took home a solo spoon with 5/9.
  • Howie72's weekly win once more takes him 1 point clear at the top with Daaanieeel drawing level with Dizart in second. At the bottom, wwe84 breaks away from the clutches of ozzz2002 and George95.

  • We had a full house this week.
  • Adelaide were subject to scathing criticism after last week's performance and they responded to stun the Sydney Swans away, keeping at bay all Swan's attempted comebacks. St Kilda and Greater Western Sydney battled it out for the first draw of the season, a Saints' behind with two minutes left was the last scoring play though they had a chance to win it on the final siren but could not hold on to the mark. Carlton fought hard at home against West Coast but they could not stop themselves starting a season with 5 losses for the first time since 1989. Geelong continued their dominance over Port Adelaide as they won for the 14th time in the last 15 matches though they only pulled away in the final quarter. Fremantle kicked 8 unanswered goals either side of half-time to put the result beyond doubt against the Western Bulldogs and remain perfect at home. North Melbourne caused a big upset when they destroyed Hawthorn in the first half to lead by 57 points, holding on in the second two quarters to win by 28. The battle of Queensland saw Gold Coast hold off a fast finishing Brisbane to triumph by just 5 points. Melbourne showed more spirit than the previous week but unfortunately for them they were up against the reigning premiers, Richmond, the Tigers withstanding all that Melbourne threw at them before pulling away in the final quarter as they Demons tired. A crowd of over 91000 on ANZAC Day saw Collingwood thrash an injury-hit Essendon to move into the top 8 for the first time in 56 rounds.
  • It was a below average round as we went 61/135 for a 45.18% strike rate, averaging more than two less correct tips each than the previous round. There were no perfect game with the closest being the West Coast andf Richmond wins which had 14 correct tips each. Not surprisingly, no one predicted the St Kilda vs GWS draw. I wonder if anyone will ever predict a draw unless one of us has an unassailable lead with one round to go....
  • For the first time this season we had just one weekly winner, in a round where we averaged about 4/9, ASA somehow managed to tip a very impressive 7/9. Surprisingly we had just one spoon and this went to wwe84 with 2/9.
  • Howie72's remains 1 point clear at the top with ASA leaping over Dizart and Daaanieeel into second spot. At the bottom, wwe84's wooden spoon effort sees him drop to the back of the field.

That match is one of the highlights of the season, and that crowd would usually only be beaten in some of the finals matches. It is also the fact that Collingwood has the largest fanbase of any football team in Australia that builds up the numbers. They are also one of the most hated teams in the league. smile

And the game is nothing like rugby league or rugby union. It is much faster and flowing and in my opinion, much better to watch than any other code of football world-wide.
This video shows some highlights. Check out the high marks (catches)!

  • We had a full house this week.
  • Since the start of the VFL/AFL competition in 1897 Carlton had never started a season 0-6 until now as Western Bulldogs lead at every break to defeat them in an error-ridden game. Sydney raced out of the gates at Geelong to jump to a 15 point quarter-time lead only to kick just 1 behind in the second quarter to trail at the break and at three-quarter time, however the Swans kicked 7 final quarter goals to storm home and inflict Geelong's first home loss since 2006 when they had been leading at half-time. North Melbourne lead early at home to Port Adelaide but that was to be it for the 'Roos as Port Adelaide cruised to victory. Both GWS and Brisbane were inaccurate with their kicking but it was the Giants that created more opportunities and never trailed at any stage. Hawthorn also never trailed at home to St Kilda but left it late to make the game safe, only pulling away in the final quarter. Adelaide racked up a huge 45 point lead over Gold Coast at half-time but took their foot off the pedal in the final 2 quarters but still had the biggest win of the round at 48 points. The two most inconsistent sides battled it out after heavy defeats last week and there was nothing in at at half-time, Melbourne kicked 7 goals in the third quarter and that was to much for Essendon as the Demons powered away to win by 36 points. For three quarters of the game it was a hard fought clash between Collingwood and Richmond but the home team Magpies tired and the Tigers cemented top spot in the standings as the final winning margin got inflated to 43 points. Fremantle lead at the first major break over West Coast in the first Western derby at Optus stadium but it was the Eagles that struck back in the second quarter and held on for a 6th consecutive win over the Dockers.
  • It was a very good round as we went 101/135 for a 74.81% strike rate, the first time we have reached the century mark for correct tips this season. There were two perfect games, being the Bulldogs and Crows victories. The trickiest game to pick was Sydney's away win at Geelong which only Sypher managed to foresee.
  • We are back to multi weekly winners as paper_aero, srini701, Daaanieeel, Dizart and Howie72 all went 8/9. A wooden spoon was taken home by both ozzz2002 and ASA with 4/9.
  • Howie72's lead increases to 2 points while Dizart and Daaanieeel leap back over ASA into a tie for second spot. At the bottom, wwe84 climbs to within 1 point of ozzz2002.

  • We had a full house this week.
  • Geelong cut the Giants down to size as they destroyed them by 61 points, keepoing GWS to their second lowest points total ever at 32. Gold Coast lead at every major break except when it mattered as Western Bulldogs delighted their home fans with a final quarter comeback to edge the Suns by 9 points. Essendon held a narrow lead over Hawthorn at half-time but like every other match the Bombers had played this season they failed to win the 3rd quarter and it went from bad to worse as the Hawks piled on the pressure and the points to run away with the game. West Coast Eagles dominated Port Adelaide in Perth as they soared to the top of the standings temporarily after most had written them off before the start of the season. North Melbourne caused the upset of the round as they beat the Sydney Swans away, showing composure late in the final quarter after Sydney had taken the lead and holding their breaths after the Swans missed their chance to steal the game. Carlton's season keeps getting worse as they were totally outclassed by a rampant Adelaide, a dominant 1st quarter setting up the big win. Richmond took over again at the top of the ladder as they completely dominated Fremantle at home, the Tigers restricted the Dockers to just 9 first half points, Fremantle's second lowest first half score in their history. It was comfortable for Melbourne at St Kilda as they lead at every break to leave them just outside the top 8. Brisbane were brave in giving Collingwood a huge scare but they could not quite get over the line as the Magpies eked out a narrow 7 point win in a high scoring encounter.
  • It was an even better round this week than last week as we went 109/135 for an 80.74% strike rate, making it back-to-back rounds with a century of correct tips despite there being just 1 perfect game, being Adelaide's win over Carlton. The trickiest game to pick was North Melbourne's upset away win at Sydney which only ElfTwinkle managed to foresee.
  • We had more than a handful of weekly winners as 7 of us went 8/9. Just one wooden spoon this week and it was picked up by Sypher as he went 5/9.
  • George95 filled in his spot in the weekly win column leaving only chogobad, gtho4 and ozzz2002 still to get their first weekly win.
  • With the top 3 all getting a weekly win, Howie72's lead over Dizart and Daaanieeel remains at 2 points. At the bottom, wwe84 catches up with both ozzz2002 and Sypher.

  • LeoDaVinci was running on default fuel this week.
  • It was bitterly cold and windy in Melbourne after a day of rain which added to the drama as Ben Ronke starred for Sydney in just his third game as he kicked 7 goals to inspire the Swans to a late comeback win over their hosts, Hawthorn. West Coast made it 7 wins in a row as a 5 goal blitz in the second quarter set them up for a win at Greater Western Sydney. It was a typical third quarter for Essendon as they went from a narrow half-time lead over Carlton to be trailing heading in to the final quarter, the Bombers have yet to win a third quarter this season while the Blues earned their first victory of 2018. A massive final quarter from Melbourne saw them turn a comfortble lead over Gold Coast into a huge win by 69 points. It was a thriller in the Adelaide derby as Port Adelaide snapped a 5 game Crows derby winning streak with the winning goal kicked with just 21 seconds left on the clock. Brisbane competed well at Western Bulldogs but it was not enough to secure their first win of the season as the hosts did just enough to win. Fremantle survived a St Kilda third quarter comeback to pull away again late in a game that did not rise to any great heights. Richmond still have questions about their ability away from their home ground as they survived a huge scare to earn a narrow victory at North Melbourne. It was a dour affair at Collingwood as Geelong came out on top in a low scoring game to move into third place in the standings.
  • We slipped this round as we went 74/126 for a 58.73% strike rate, failing to make it a hattrick of rounds with a century of correct tips. There were no perfect games, the closest being the Western Bulldogs and Fremantle wins. The trickiest game to pick was Carlton breaking their duck with a win over Essendon which only ElfTwinkle managed to foresee.
  • There was only one weekly winner and what a performance it was as ElfTwinkle went a perfect 9/9, following up from last week's 8/9. As a result she earns the first bonus point of the season. There was also just one wooden spoon this week and it was picked up by ASA as he went 3/9.
  • We are still waiting for chogobad, gtho4 and ozzz2002 to get their first weekly win while 6 of us are yet to earn out first wooden spoon.
  • Howie72 is joined at the top by Daaanieeel while Dizart gets pushed off the podium by a flying ElfTwinkle. At the bottom, Sypher takes over the bottom rung by himself, 2 points behind ozzz2002 and wwe84.

  • We had a full house this week.
  • Over 39000 braved the wet conditions at Adelaide Oval and the conditions did not make it easy but Adelaide got back into the winning circle with a low scoring win over the Western Bulldogs, keeping the inaccurate visitors to just 2 goals and 26 points. In Hobart, North Melbourne broke away from Greater Western Sydney in the third quarter to close out comfortable winners. Gold Coast and Port Adelaide travelled to Shanghai in China and it was Port Adelaide that powered away in the wet to easily account for the Suns. Essendon finally won a third quarter (by 12-8) as they lead from start to finish over a disappointing Geelong. Sydney were never in any danger as they thrashed a wasteful Fremantle by 59 points. St Kilda held a 1 point lead over Collingwood at half-time but it was the Magpies that clawed their way to a 28 point winning margin at the final hooter. Carlton came crashing back to earth as Melbourne demolished them by 109 points, the biggest win for the Demons in 25 years. Brisbane stunned Hawthorn at home to record their first win of the season, thumping the Hawks by 56 points. West Coast were ruthless in dispatching the reigning premier Richmond Tigers by 47 points at home, the Eagles 8th win in a row putting them atop the standings.
  • We improved this round as we went 91/135 for a 67.40% strike rate. It was helped by 2 perfect games, being the Port Adelaide and Sydney victories. On the other hand, no one thought Brisbane would beat Hawthorn which was surprising as Syphers regularly goes for the Lions, the one week he tips against them, Brisbane wins and this cost him a bonus point.
  • Sypher takes a solo weekly win with 8/9. We all got more right than wrong but it was wwe84, chogobad and ASA who went 5/9 to take home a wooden spoon each.
  • We are still waiting for chogobad, gtho4 and ozzz2002 to get their first weekly win while 6 of us are yet to earn our first wooden spoon.
  • All of the top 7 went 6/9 except Howie72 who went 7/9 and as a result Howie72 opens up a 1 point gap at the top. At the bottom, Sypher leaps over wwe84 to join ozzz2002 and ASA, leaving wwe84 a point behind.

  • ASA was running on default fuel this week.
  • Collingwood trailed Western Bulldogs by 32-7 at the first break but dominated the second half to restrict the Bulldogs to 4 behinds and win by 35 points. Apart from a brief period in the 3rd quarter when St Kilda lead it was Richmond all the way, pulling away in the final quarter. Sydney remain perfect away from home this season as they beat Brisbane in the wet and have not lost to the Lions since 2009. Geelong were never behind at home to Carlton but still had to fight for the victory. It was not pleasant conditions as Essendon upset Greater Western Sydney in the smokey and pungent haze from hazard-reduction burning in the Blue Mountains, the Giants now having lost 4 in a row. It may be an omen as West Coast beat Hawthorn in Melbourne for the first time since 2006, the season where the Eagles went on to win the premiership. Melbourne crushed Adelaide in Alice Springs by 91 points for their 5th win in a row, the first time they have won by more than 90 points back-to-back, the first time they have won by more than 90 points twice in a season and the third time in a row they have won by 10 goals or more. Inform North Melbourne were too good at Optus Stadium against Fremantle, leaving the Dockers with their first home loss at the new stadium against a travelling team.
  • We had a good round as we went 81/112 for a 72.32% strike rate. It was helped by 2 perfect games, being the Sydney and Geelong victories. THe trickist game to pick was Essendon's win at Greater Wester Sydney where 4 of us got it right.
  • Three weekly winners as gtho4, N-Bomb and George95 all went 7/8. Sypher took home the solo spoon with 4/8.
  • We are still waiting for chogobad and ozzz2002 to get their first weekly win as gtho4 takes himself off this list while 6 of us are yet to earn our first wooden spoon.
  • Daaanieeel joins Howie72 at the top of the standings again, one point ahead of ElfTwinkle. We have a three-way tie at the bottom as ASA, Sypher and wwe84 cannot be separated.
