3rd leg of FT Triple Crown

158th Melbourne Cup

This year's race is almost here. The scoring system for the Melbourne Cup comp is the same as the Grand National and Kentucky Derby compc earlier this month:

RULES
o The rules for this comp are simple, and are the same as last year and the year before.
o Pick 10 horses in the order you think they'll finish, 1st to 10th.
o Points: for any horse out of the 10 you've picked, which finishes in the first five places:
      1st : 10 pts
      2nd : 6 pts
      3rd : 3 pts
      4th : 2 pts
      5th : 1 pt
o The order of your picks will be used as a tiebreaker to separate any dead-heats or ties.
o If two players have identical picks x10, whoever posts first wins the tie-breaker.
DEADLINE
The race starts on Tue 6th Nov 2018 at 3:00pm local time, 0400 hrs GMT, 10:00pm Mon 5th Nov FT time.
Tips close when they jump. There's a count-down clock to the race start time in the post below this one.
The following few pages (of many out there) have details of the contenders and their form:At the moment there are 85 horses still in the running to qualify, after first acceptances (there were 183 entries). The field of 24 runners and their post positions (barrier draw) will be announced three days before the race at around 7:30pm local time on Sat 3rd Nov:

Late Nominations - Tuesday (Midday) 4th September
Handicaps Declared - Tuesday (Midday) 11th September
First Declarations - Tuesday (Midday) 9th October
Second Declarations - Monday (10am) 29th October
Final Declarations - Saturday (4.30pm) 3rd November
The final field is announced at 6.30pm on Saturday evening with the barrier draw conducted at approximately 7.30pm.

Picks x10 can be posted at any time in this thread, even if the field of 24 hasn't been announced! Please note that there is no need to pick reserves. If your horse is scratched, so be it (we've got half the field covered with our 10 picks). However, as is the case with any tipping comp in here, you are free to edit your picks at any time before the deadline.

ElfTwinkle is the defending titleholder, who won gold on a countback from gtho4. N-Bomb won bronze.

Sorry, George. The countdown clock is now a count-UP clock. At the time of posting this, it is 3:52pm, Melbourne time, and the clock says 0:00:52:55 and counting upwards. frown

    George95 missed the deadline

      • The Race That Stops a Nation had its 158th consecutive running, on a very wet day in Melbourne.
      • Ten of the usual suspects joined in the fun, and produced a very tight finish. Eight people picked the winner and second placed horse, with the minor placings sorting out the order.
      • Third favourite, Cross Counter, came from almost last with 700m to go, with a beautifully-timed run! He ran past Marmelo and A Prince of Aaran. Finche was in the leading group for most of the race and finished fourth, and Rostopovich in fifth.
      • Tie-breakers were needed to separate 3rd and 4th, with the unlucky loser being paper_aero. Fifth and sixth also finished on the same points. At the other end of the field, LeoDaVinci shows that he has attended the ozzz2002 School of Sports Tipping, by collecting a duck's egg.
      • The winner of $2,000,000 trophy for 2018 is... wwe84, who only missed picking fifth spot. A nose behind was gtho4, who missed picking fourth and another nose away in third was srini701, who could not find the third placed runner.
