2019 Tipping Comp

The NRL season will be kicking off mid-March on Thursday 14th March. The rule for this year's comp are the same as previous years, viz.

    • One point a correct pick, nothing for a loss.
    • Default if you forget to pick, the wooden spoon score.
    • Perfect picks score a bonus point.
    • If needed, end-of-season tiebreaker for podium spots will be HoF v Spoons. Largest margin wins, or if the margin is equal, most weekly HoF wins.
    • Deadline each week is kick-off in the first game, on Thursday night at 7:50pm local time (one round starts at 4:05pm being the ANZAC weekend). Two of the 25 rounds start on Friday night at 6:00pm.

This is the 19th edition of the NRL tipping comp at FT (it was the first-ever tipping comp).

Dizart won it last year (his first-ever NRL win), followed by paper_aero and LeoDaVinci (aka no-one from down under won a medal in their local comp, for the 2nd year running). Can they retain their crowns?

Put your name down if you'd like to play, and let's get ready to rumble!

  • Welcome to the 2019 edition of the NRL tipping competition. Last year we had 11 runners but this year we increase this to 12 with the welcome addition of srini701, who makes his NRL debut.
  • Will Dizart be able to retain his title? Will paper_aero make the podium for the 4th year in a row? Will LeoDaVinci defend his podium position or can he go even better? Will srini701 show us rugby league is alive and well in India? So many questions, so few answers....yet.
  • George95 missed the Melbourne vs Brisbane game, lodging tips after the game had ended.
  • The last time Melbourne lost a season opener was in 2001 and this year they hosted Brisbane, it did not take long for the Storm to open the scoring as they crossed the line for a try in the 2nd minute and never looked back despite a couple of quick Brisbane tries midway through the second half making it a little more interesting. It was scoreless in the first half as Newcastle hosted Cronullabut this changed with the Sharks and Knights trading penalties before Newcastle scored the first try in the 68th minute. Edrick Lee then went from villian to hero in about 3 minutes as he tackled Sione Katoa without the ball and the video referee awarded a controversial penalty try to tie it up, moments later he intercepted a pass to score the winning try and give Newcastle the victory. The defending champion Sydney Roosters were expected to carry on from last year against South Sydney but it was the Rabbitohs that controlled the game and emerged with an impressive win despite being down by 2 points at the break. Most Australian rugby league experts gave the Warriors very little chance of making the play-offs this year but this may change after their demolition of the Canterbury Bulldogs in an emotional match the day after the mass shooting in Christchurch and they lead the standings after 1 round. The two remaining members of the Tigers 2005 premiership winning team still playing in the NRL were instrumental in Wests win over Manly after the Sea Eagles held a narrow 2-0 half-time lead. North Queensland started the post-Johnathan Thurston era in style as they outclassed St George in Townsville, scoring 5 tries to 2. Last season's wooden-spooners got off to a winning start after holding off a fast finishing Penrith for their first road win since round 25 in 2017. Canberra overcame attrocious conditions and their handling errors to prove too good for Gold Coast, keeping their hosts scoreless. It did not help the Titan's cause when losing a top player before the start and another in the 12th minute due to injury.
  • We start the season with an average round as we went 51/95 for a strike rate of 53.68%. There were no perfect games but we got close with Melbourne's win over Brisbane where N-Bomb was the only one who thought the Broncos would win after the Storm lost key players from last year. The trickiest game to tip was Parramatta's win at Penrith where this time, N-Bomb was on the right side.
  • The season started with 6 weekly winners as wwe84, LeoDaVinci, paper_aero, ozzz2002, gtho4 and Sypher all went 5/8. The only way ElfTwinkle can go from here is up after she starts with a solo spoon after going 2/8.
  • As a result we have 6 squashed together on the top step of the podium while ElfTwinkle finds herself adrfit at the bottom.

Will paper_aero make the podium for the 4th year in a row?

Trying for 5th in a row & 9th in 10 looking at details in first post.
Now that has cursed my season.

  • We had a full house this week though George95 missed the St George vs Souths game, lodging tips after the game had ended.
  • After a lethargic first half South Sydney went into the break 12-6 down to St George but the second half was the opposite as they ran in 5 tries before the Dragons could reply to make it 2 from 2. Melbourne dominated the first half at Canberra but the Raiders got back into it after break and threatened to make a stirring comeback but could not take full advantage of their numerous chances and the Storm remained composed to ease to victory. It was all one way traffic in Brisbane as the Broncos scored 5 tries before North Queensland could muster a reply to run out comfortable winners. It was all over by the break as Cronulla celebrated Paul Gallen's record equalling game with a 20-0 lead after 40 minutes, though they could not score again they were never in any danger of being overtaken. Paul Gallen's 328th premiership match for the Sharks equals the most games for the club and he can claim the record for himself next round. Penrith ground out a hard fought win over Newcastle though nearly let it slip away late, a last ditch tackle stopped a Newcastle try before the Knights scored to close within 2 points with 7 minutes to go. A Panther's dropped ball close to their goalline in the 76th minute gave the Knights a gilt-edged chance to take the lead but the Panthers held on. Sydney Roosters held off a fast-finishing Manly to win by 8 points after being ahead by 26 early in the second half. Canterbury jumped out early at home to Parramatta but fell behind narrowly by half-time, back-to-back intercept tries early in the second half broke the game open in the Eels favour to hand the Bulldogs consecutive heavy losses. In round 1 the Warriors demolished the Bulldogs, in round 2 they made error after error and were subsequently thrashed by an impressive Wests Tigers lead by their two veteran players.
  • It was a much better round for most of us as we went 74/95 for a strike rate of 77.89%. There were two perfect games as we all tipped the Cronulla and Sydney wins. The trickiest game to tip was Penrith's win at Newcastle (which was also the closest scoreline) but 5 of us still got this right.
  • We had 2 weekly winners this week, ozzz2002 and srini701 went perfect with 8/8 to earn the first bonus points of the season. We should give up now as srini701's first perfect round has happened in only his second tipping round. Is it luck or is he a closet NRl super fan? This time Howie72 takes home a solo spoon with 4/8.
  • With his perfect round ozzz2002 takes over the lead by himself and is one point ahead of the also perfect srini701 while paper_aero drops back to third place by himself. At the bottom ElfTwinkle catches up with both George95 and Howie72.

  • We had a full house this week.
  • It was a thriller in Brisbane where the home team tied it up with St George in the 73rd minute and then missed their chance of a game winning field goal, only for the Dragons to go down the other end and pot their own field goal atempt with just seconds left to win the game, what was worse for Brisbane was a former Bronco's player kicked it. Canberra outlasted a Newcastle side that missed 54 tackles and made 14 errors, the only surprise was the Raiders could only win by 7 points against an error-ridden Knights. Last year's wooden spoon winners hosted the reigning premiers and it was a throughly entertaining game which saw the 6 lead changes, it was not until the final 20 minutes before the Sydney Roosters pulled away from Parramatta to secure the win. Manly took their home game against the Warriors to Christchurch, it being played just 8 days after the mass shooting tragedy and they carried on with their impressive record playing in New Zealand where they win 70% of the time, outclassing a woeful Warriors side. A second half scoring blitz where Cronulla ran in 6 tries, 5 inside the first 17 minutes, saw the Sharks destroy North Queensland in Townsville after being narrowly behind at the break. It was a nightmare at home for Penrith as they could not score a try against Melbourne, poor handling cost the Panthers in the final 20 minutes of the first spell where they dominated possession as the Storm capitalised in the second half. Canterbury only made 3 handling errors against Wests as they upset their hosts for their first win of the season, bringing the Tigers back down to earth after their huge win over the Warriors last week. South Sydney maintained their unbeaten start to the season but they will be glad the game ended at 80 minutes as Gold Coast were finishing with a good head of steam.
  • It was an average round as we went 55/96 for a strike rate of 57.29%. There was one perfect game as we all tipped Souths to beat Gold Coast while no one thought Canterbury had a chance of beating Wests.
  • Another 2 weekly winners this round as wwe84 and Sypher went 6/8. Thinking about it again, we should not give up as srini701 crashes back to earth with a solo spoon of 2/8, fulfilling his prophecy.
  • ozzz2002 maintains his 1 point led at the top but now finds wwe84 hot on his heels rather than srini701, a point further back is a group of 4. It is not all bad news for srini701 as he has gone from 7th to 2nd to 7th so guess what next round will be like? George95 finds himself alone at the bottom but only a point behind ElfTwinkle and Howie72.

  • We had a full house this week.
  • Sydney scored the first of their 7 tries in the 8th minute and never looked back after that, thumping Brisbane by 32 points. The Warriors had conceded 80 points in their last 2 games but earned a morale boosting win over a lucklustre Gold Coast. It was low scoring at Penrith as the home team took on the Wests Tigers and the Ivan Clearly coached Panthers were trailing 8-2 in the 78th minute before they scored and son, Nathan Cleary kicked the sideline conversion after the final hooter to send it to golden point. In the 83rd minute the son kicked the winning field goal to complete Penriths great escape. Manly's game against South Sydney also went to golden point after the Rabbitohs tied it up with a 71st minute penalty, the Sea Eagles kicked the winning field goal also in the 83rd minute to secure the upset win and end the Rabbitoh's unbeaten start to the season. Two tries in the opening 6 minutes set up Canberra for a strong win at North Queensland. It was Parramatta's last game at ANZ Stadium and they went out on a winning by note taking care of Cronulla Sharks, the next time they play at home will be against Wests at the new Bankwest Stadium. Melbourne remain unbeaten but only just as they came from 12-0 down to beat Canterbury 18-16, they still had to hold their breaths as a last minute Bulldogs conversion went wide. Newcastle vs St George was the third game this round to go to golden point but the Dragon's winning field goal was not kicked in the 83rd minute like the previous 2 but the 87th minute.
  • It was a very good round as we went 70/96 for a strike rate of 72.91%. There was one perfect game as we all tipped Melbourne to beat Canterbury while the trickiest game was Manly's upset of Souths which only Sypher foresaw.
  • With his tip of Manly, Sypher takes the weekly win with a perfect 8/8 and earns a bonus point. On the other hand, N-Bomb went 2/8 to take home his first spoon of the season.
  • We have a new leader as Sypher's bonus point takes him 1 point clear of ozzz2002 and wwe84. Srini701 could not keep up his pattern as he stayed in 7th pace rather than jumping back to 2nd. George95 remains 1 point adrift at the bottom though it is now Howe72 and N-Bomb who are just above him.

  • Sypher was running on default fuel this week.
  • LeoDaVinci and George95 missed the first game due to late tips.
  • No game recap as I try to catch up.
  • It was a good round despite the number of wooden spoons as we went 59/86 for a strike rate of 68.60%. There were three perfect games as we all tipped the Melbourne, South Sydney and St George victories. No one gave Wests Tigers a chance of winning away at Brisbane.
  • George95 had a very good round despite being late with his tips and missing the first game, he ended up with 7/7. On the other hand, we had 8 wooden spoons being awarded and I would get rsi if I tried to type out all names.
  • Despite going default, Sypher retains the lead but is joined at the top by ozzz2002 again. These two enjoy a 1 point lead over wwe84. George95 climbs off the bottom with his weekly win, leaving N-Bomb and Howie72 adrfit by 1 point.
