Australian Football League
AFL
2019 Tipping Competition

Aussie Rules, Australia's unique brand of football, will be kicking off on Thu 21st March. The rule for this year's comp are the same as previous years, viz.

    • One point a correct pick, nothing for a loss.
    • Default if you forget to pick is the wooden spoon score.
    • Perfect picks score a bonus point.
    • If needed, end-of-season tiebreaker for the podium spots will be HoF v Spoons. Largest
differential wins or, if the differential is equal, most weekly HoF wins. If that's identical
      then most bonus points wins.
    • Deadline will be start of the first game each weekend - usually a Friday night at 7:50pm,
with the occasional Thursday night game at 7:20pm. One round will commence early, on
Wednesday 24th April (ANZAC Day weekend).

This will be the 19th edition of the AFL tipping comp:

  • Welcome to the 2019 AFL tipping competition where we have 14 runners in the field, one less than last year with everyone returning other than ASA. Will Daaanieeel retain his crown from 2018 and will Dizart and Howie72 retain their podium positions? Will someone else see their name shining in lights at the end of the season? Will there actually be any lights? Will West Coast Eagles win the Grand Final again and will Carlton win more than 2 games all season? I could have a lot more questions but that will do for now.
  • George95 missed the Richmond vs Carlton match with late tips, lodged after the game had finished.
  • Carlton played Richmond in the season opener in front of 85016 fans at the MCG but the Blues forgot the start time as Richmond raced out to a 34-1 lead at quarter time, to their credit they did not give up and closed the gap a bit before the Tigers opened it back up in the final quarter. The second game could have gone either way with both Collingwood and Geelong leading at various times throughout the game but it was the Cats that pounced on the Magpies near the end to kick the crucial goal and upset the losing finalist of 2018. Melbourne hosted Port Adelaide and showed early why they are one of the most favoured teams but no one told Port Adelaide that as the visitors, who had 4 debutants and 2 others playing their first game for them, came back to shock the Demons and emerge victorious. Hawthorn put in a strong third quarter to pull away from Adelaide and continue their strong recent form against the Crows, upsetting them to win their 11th game out of the last 12 against Adelaide. Western Bulldogs celebrated their first game at Marvel Stadium by holding off a fast finishing Sydney side to earn the win. Brisbane stunned the West Coast when running out comprehensive winners by 44 points, a run of 9 unanswered goals putting it beyond the reach of the reigning champions. St Kilda had a disastrous pre-season with a number of key players injured but they put that behind them to open the season with a win by the narrowest margin over Gold Coast. The final 2 games were not even close to being close as Greater Western Sydney thumped a lifeless Essendon while an undermanned Fremantle destroyed a lethargic North Melbourne by 82 points, the biggest winning margin of the round.
  • Away teams started the seaon strongly by winning the first 4 games but then the home teams took over to win the remainder. We managed a disappointing start to the season when we went 52/125 for a 41.60% strike rate. We all picked Richmond to beat Carlton but no one figured Hawthorn would win away at Adelaide. An honourable mention for ozzz2002 who was the only one to pick Port Adelaide's upset win over Melbourne, and to Sypher who thought Brisbane would overcome West Coast. Our defending champion starts the season lurking in a tie for 3rd place.
  • Two weekly winners to start the season as both ozzz2002 and ElfTwinkle went 5/9 while 6 of us took home a spoon with 3/9, or 3/8 in George95's case.
  • Not surprisingly after their weekly wins, ozzz2002 and ElfTwinkle enjoy a 1 point lead at the top over a group of 6. A further group of 6 find themselves another point back.

  • We had a full house this round.
  • Collingwood were too clinical for Richmond, increasing their lead at each break to run away 44 point victors. Adelaide travelled to Sydney and put last week's disappointment behind then and overcame an early deficit to record a hard fought win that has put early pressure on the winless Swans. It was a first half disaster for Essendon as they found themselves down by 22 points, too many errors cost them in the end as the Saints made it 2 from 2. Port Adelaide also made it 2 from 2 when they overcame a spirited Carlton by 16 points after only being up by 3 points with a quarter to go. Melbourne Demons were demolished by Geelong, going down by a massive 80 points in a performance that was lacklustre at best. West Coast were pleased to be back home and celebrated the unfurling of their premiership flag in style, thrashing Greater Western Sydney by 52 points. North Melbourne Kangaroos could not bounce back from a first round hiding as Brisbane Lions roared as they came from behind in the final quarter to win going away. It was a remarkable last quarter, and at times controversial, from the Western Bulldogs as they turned a 30 point deficit into a 19 point win to stun Hawthorn. Gold Coast were very wasteful with their goal kicking but still somehow managed to sneak past Fremantle in the final quarter to win by 3 points.
  • It was a similar round for us to last round as we went 54/126 for a 42.85% strike rate, just a tad better than last week. We all picked Port Adelaide to beat Carlton, meaning the poor Blues have not yet had a tip for them. The trickiest game to tip was Gold Coast's win at home to Fremantle which only George95 thought would happen.
  • Just a solo weekly winner this week as wwe84 went 6/9 while Sypher took home the only spoon with 2/9.
  • We have a 4-way tie for the lead as ozzz2002 and ElfTwinkle are joined by wwe84 and Howie72 with N-Bomb being just a point further back. With his wooden spoon, Sypher finds himself at bottom of the ladder with no one for company but still early days.

  • We had a full house this round.
  • Geelong were never behind in the final three quarters at Adelaide but had to withstand a home team comeback to remain unbeaten after the Crows got to within 3 points early in the final quarter. Melbourne and Essendon were supposed to be vying for top 4 spots this season but going into round 3, Melbourne and Essendon filled the bottom 2 places on the ladder. Melbourne took a narrow lead into half-time but a Bombers third quarter blitz put the game beyond the Demons. Sydney needed a win and they duly obliged against a brave Carlton that hung around in the final quarter without getting close enough on the scoreboard to put a lot of pressure on the Swans, Sydney triumphed by 19 points despite both sides having the same number of scoring kicks. Greater Western Sydney had the biggest winning margin of the round as a 6 goal to 1 last quarter pushed the winning margin to 49 points against Richmond. Brisbane remain unbeaten after leading all the way into the final quarter before Port Adelaide took the lead, a late surge saw the Lions claw their way back into the contest to win by 17 points. West Coast showed they will not give up their premiership easily as they once again beat Collingwood, the team they beat in the 2018 final. The Gold Coast Suns are rising as they lead from start to finish at the Western Bulldogs but had to survive another Bulldogs comeback in the final quarter. Hawthorn overcame a very slow start when the trailed North Melbourne by 25 points nearing the end of the first quarter to put in a dominant second quarter to take control and though the 'Roos threatened at times they could not get over the line. It was low-scoring in Fremantle as the homeside took control early in the second quarter, that stretch of scoring proved crucial as St Kilda kept coming back and the winning margin was just 5 points in the end.
  • We managed to improve on last round as we went 70/128 for a 54.68% strike rate though the season looks to be one of the most difficult to tip so far. There were no perfect games with the closest being Hawthorn's win over North Melbourne which only chogobad missed. No one predicted Gold Coast would win away at the Western Bulldogs.
  • After wwe84 won last round with 6/9 we had 7 weekly winners this time with the same total. The spoon score was 3/9 which both ozzz2002 and chogobad managed to achieve.
  • With his weekly win, N-Bomb takes over the lead by himself but there is a traffic jam for second a point behind as this spot is filled by 8 of us. One point further back is a group of 4 while chogobad brings uo the rear another 2 points back.

  • Sypher was running on default fuel this week.
  • LeoDaVinci and George95 missed the first game due to late tips.
  • No game recap as I try to catch up.
  • It was a below average round as we went 52/115 for a 45.21% strike rate. There was one perfect game as we all tipped West Coast to beat Fremantle. Two games were tipped correctly by only 1 person, being the GWS win away to Geelong which had chogobad being successful and St Kilda's win over Hawthorn which saw wwe84 get this one right.
  • We had another 6 weekly winners this round with 5/9. Srini701 and ElfTwinkle took home spoons with 2/9.
  • N-Bomb remains out on front by 1 point but the pack of 8 immediately behind him has been reduced from 8 to 3 - Daaanieeel, wwe84 and LeoDaVinci. With his default score, Sypher takes over at the bottom though just a point behind a group of 4.
