I am doing a quiz that I have used part quotes in. To indicate that I have cut out some of the quote I have put in .... (which was the prescribed way when I was at uni). The problem is the program will not accept this and states that it is an error. But if I do not do this (technically) the quote is wrong and I am not informing the reader that I have made cuts (which may also consequently incur notices - if a person looks it up and it is different). So what do I do?

I thought the system accepted 3 dots, but not more than that. Not sure though...

Yes, three should be fine. I was taught to use three, irrespective of the length of the 'left out' bit. Actually, the system should accept four dots, as we allowed for the use of the ellipsis at the end of a sentence, in which case there would need to be a full stop as well.

Thanks to both of you for your prompt help. I have cut the dots back to three and everything is now ok.
