While global rankings worked pretty well when we had 40,000 Quizzyland players, we're about to hit the 1,000,000 (!!) mark.
So, I've put in place an intruiging new dimension for ranking comparisions:http://www.funtrivia.com/allclasses.cfm
Each player is placed with other players who registered around the same time as them. Thus, we now have over 80 "classes", each consisting of 10,000 players.
The next 10,000 players to register will be in a class of their own, etc, etc.
The goal of all this is to:
- encourage quiz playing. We all know that scores don't really matter, but it's always fun collecting points and moving up a ladder. It's much more fun when you're rated against people who don't have a 6 year head start on you.
- I'll probably make other little tweaks like offer bonus points for rating a quiz, playing quizzes that aren't played often, or that are particularly difficult, etc (to stop the "people will only play easy quizzes!" complaint that invariably will be brought up). Little perks to reward the adventurous and encourage the types of things that quiz authors want to see more of.
- give absolutely everyone a reasonable chance of making the "top 100" list for their class. A new player is ranked against new players. They start with a clean slate, and don't have to play 27,000 quizzes to catch up to GammaB, who has a 6 year head start on them.
- eventually put in place other community elements such as message boards (extension of the current chat boards) so that people in a class can get to know each other. As FunTrivia grows larger, it is very easy to get swept into a sea of anonymity and enormity.
"All Classes" appears under the community menu, and "My Class" appears under the "My Stuff" menu.
