We will be re-introducing titles under members' names in the forums shortly. How about some suggestions from you, the members, as to possible titles?

I thought somehow linked to the fact that you are 'talking', but that is open to suggestion. We need about nine titles.

1. 1 - 99
2. 100 - 199
3. 200 - 499
4. 500 - 999
5. 1000 - 1999
6. 2000 - 4999
7. 5000 - 9999
8. 10000 - 19999
9. 20000 +

Someone did suggest motormouth for the 20,000+!

So give us suggestions, bearing in mind that they are titles and we do not want people to be insulted at all, we want to encourage people to make posts, not discourage them.

I'm not sure about rungs 2-8, but maybe 1 can be "rookie," and 9 can be "veteran."

I think a title like "rookie" has somewhat of a negative ring to it which would probably lead to more rubbish posts.

Hardly anyone will reach stage 9, at the moment only two people will be 9s, and soon to be three as I only have about 400 to go, only five in group 8, then a small bunch in group 7.

I suppose one idea might be plain and simple Group One, Group Two, Group Three etc

I agree with Leau about 'rookie', what about a beginner instead - we were all beginners at one point!

That sounds fine, or even Newbie which is universally understood. I would steer away from Junior Member as that implies age rather than experience. Then of course we do have some members who have been with us quite a long time but are not very active in the forums, perhaps only posting with QL queries, they might not like to be called new.

You read my mind with the last line of your post, Sue - "Newbie" is as bad as rookie, if not worse.

harumph. Just because I am not effusive and declamatory (okay, I'm not a motormouth ) doesn't mean I should be near the bottom of the rung... should I?

Auntie ren, I LOVE yours.. all mouth and trousers is hilarious!

Maybe I could be grandfathered in with a special title... like, Only seems to open her trap when SHE thinks it's important? Or something to keep them guessing.. like, Millenium Hand and Shrimp

I like that suggestion, Sue. It sounds a lot more positive than Newbie or Rookie!

For 1-99 it may be easier to leave them as is with their current title, member, and work on the rest at 100+

Sometimes it's hard to get that many posts early on, especially if you're just starting. I would suggest making the first set 1-50 or something to that effect. It might make forum posters happier to reach the next level with a decent amount of posts instead of haaving to reach the dreaded 100 mark.

I'd like to suggest 'laconic' for the newbies rung... or maybe 'strong silent type'

I was going to back "just warming up", but I like agony's suggestions too. Any of these would be good.

Would it be possible to do a random set for each one? For example:

Quote:

Learner, Initiate, Battler, Freshman, Apprentice, Laconic, Pupil, Aspirant, Hopeful, Novice, New Recruit, Greenie, Tenderfoot, Greenhorn, Cleanskin, Novitiate, Participant, Imbued

Maybe do a random one of these each time a person with 1-49 posts logs in. It would be interesting to have a large number of titles for one level. It would be an original idea, and seperate us from other sites. The only downside is that people might get confused with so many titles. But with a color scheme, you could match the title with the level.

Let's make this bigger than Ben Hur and get Sue to set up a poll for everyone to vote for their faves . . . oh, is that toooo democratic?

Seriously though, perhaps Sue should short-list about 10 for each and put it to the 'people'?

This system won't permit random names, we are using a standard commercial software package for these forums, they are not Terry's own programming. The only way of doing that would be for me to edit the name for each member when they hit a changeover number - can you imagine the shouts if I dare to sleep when someone's title is due to change?

Let us put this another way, does anyone NOT like the list I have chosen above?

I don`t care for the list, not that I dislike ALL of the choices, I do like 6 (mainly as I like being thought of as a partisan though) and 10 but the rest have no meaning for me just reading them. Not that I have any good suggestions to add except maybe the titles should be able to be understood by the majority without having to resort to a dictionary and that they should be scaled, as in 1-10 or as in from lowest level to highest without the titles suggesting that the member is less than another member that has more posts. Not an easy task eh.

I really like "Just warming up" as Number 1 choice ( plus I had to edit this post as I somehow double posted).
